Right so Tubs has been at it over 10 years now and the show badly needs a shake up. Vote for who you would like to see as the new host.

Regardless of better options I think RTE will almost certainly pick Claire Byrne as the next LLS host, they wont be able to resist the 'First ever female host of the LLS' angle. Miriam will try for it too but Byrne has already beaten her to Sean o'Rourkes old slot so Id expect the same to happen again with the LLS, Byrne is clearly the new Head Girl in RTE. Its also been reported that the commissioning editors in RTE dont like Miriams style of interviewing on radio where she patronises Z list celebrities as if they are superstars which is one of the reasons she didnt get the Today show gig.

I also think that it is obvious that Byrne has been positioning herself for the job over the last two years- her Monday night show began as a serious current affairs program but over the last two years her and the producers have shifted it massively into light entertainment with a bit of current affairs on the side. Hence why we get all the stupid mock ups of airplanes, pubs, etc. We even had Professor Luke o'Neill playing inside a zorb ball demonstrating social distancing which shows how low they will go. imo none of this silliness is by accident, it is by design because Byrne is trying to position herself to take over from Tubridy.

Brendan o'Connor might also go for it but he he might also be pretty content with a huge wedge of cash for 4 hours of radio a week. Tommy Tiernan will be a popular pick but he doesnt fit the older profile viewer of the LLS.

I actually think the best pick would be John Creedon because he is fantastic on both the tv and radio and he has a natural interviewing style that disarms his guests and makes for interesting viewing.

Gay Byrne. What? He’s not available? Probably best cancel it so. It’s run it’s course.

A selection of guest hosts that can bring their own touch to the show on a weekly basis. Preferably not more of the same old RTE employees and contractors. Attract some actual talent, even it that happens to be some international journalist or actor plugging their latest work. Let them work with the production team for the week and come up with something different.

It's been the Ryan Tubridy show for far too long and he already has another outlet for his opinionated rubbish on the radio every morning. It hasn't been the LLS since Gaybo left, PK did a decent job to try retain some of the important elements but with RT it's just an ego trip. RTE want to hang onto it because they're too proud to retire the name and the glory of the longest running chat show...

If Claire Byrne and Tommy Tiernan could have a lovechild, that would be the best option. Solid on the current affairs and very comfortable with the frippery....

The meat and potatoes of the old Late Late used to be great current affairs debates and that whole element has been destroyed under Tubridy. He has no interest in current affairs or politics beyond wringing a sob story out of it if at all possible and his knowledge on almost all subjects, appears to be puddle deep.

As it stands, it's a toss up between the two. Maybe Claire would shade it. She might restore the show to something like the Pat Kenny era, and even that would be a huge improvement over the current dross.

I severely doubt Tubridy's going anywhere though. As long as those inexplicably high ratings keep rolling in, he'll be left well alone.

    I'd never considered John Creedon.

He's intelligent, has a great personality and is an excellent broadcaster.

He'd be able to handle the widest variety of interviews, in my opinion.

I suspect they'll go for someone younger though and think it'll be Claire Byrne.

All on the assumption Tubs leaves which I cannot see happening

Tommy Tiernan, and then a revamp with the following...

    • Cut show back to 90 minutes.
    • Have only a single musical slot at the end but have 4 music specials througout the season.
    • Remove all misery slots with the exception of completely unique misery stories like someone who fell off a rollercoaster, broke their 2 legs, then got cancer of the arms, then recovered after a visit to Lourdes and went on to win a gold in the mens 500 metres in Tokyo would be worth having on.

Definitely not Ray D'Arcy. He shouldn't be on TV or radio. And not Claire Byrne or Brendan O'Connor. I wouldn't give them the time of day.

The others on the list aren't too bad. Dara Ó Brain and John Creedon would be good hosts.

I dont think RTE are going to push him out or anything but iirc he did an interview when he was 10 years in the job and when asked about the future he said something along the lines that he doesnt intend to do it forever like Gay Byrne.

I get the impression myself that he is actually quite bored in the job and after more than a decade its a real effort for him to muster his fake enthusiasm. Id give him two maybe three more years at best. He'd probably be happier just doing his cruisey 5 hours of radio a week and then having more time to write whatever wafflely books on Irish America that he has planned next. He had his chance in the BBC and that didnt work out so I think he is just in cruise control mode now while wondering what he will do next.

    John Creedon

Id love to see Creedon in the job, reckon he would be excellent at it. o'Briain would be decent at it as well as he is a lively interviewer with a sharp wit, something that him and Graham Norton have made very successful careers out of . But because he is not part of the RTE family its highly unlikely he would even be considered. He's probably earning very good money in the UK anyway so likely not worth his while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭KaneToad

There will be a rush to put a woman in the seat. But, in reality, the gig is a lame duck. Its a dying format. They need to decide on a different angle.

Right now, its a sad story/ song from someone/English 'celeb' selling a book/occasional Hollywood star selling a movie/RTE star talking about a tragedy.

It needs to become a recorded & edited show. And needs to have a shorter running time.

Incidentally my choice, of new presenter, would be Jarlath Regan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,507 ✭✭✭KevRossi

    Tommy Tiernan

Creedon would be the best of them, but Tiernan's performance on his own show makes him hard to overlook.

The gig will definitely go to Claire Byrne, solely because she's a woman. Noel Kelly will see to that. But Tubridy will be dragged kicking and screaming out of there. He's on crazy money considering how poor he is, he wouldn't have a chance in the UK or elsewhere, so he'll sup from the golden chalice for as long as he can. He'd be an idiot to give it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,717 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

    John Creedon

Would Tubridy be giving up the 495k if he left the LLS though? D'arcy is on 450k and his tv show is gone but he still gets the full fee just for doing his radio show. I bet if Tubs gave up the LLS Noel Kelly would still secure him his 495k, such is the way things work in RTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,507 ✭✭✭KevRossi

    Tommy Tiernan

At the next round of contract negotiations he'd have to have a salary reduced. Though as you say, the way RTE work he'd probably get an increase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭Hyperbollix

    Tommy Tiernan

I could see Tubridy going radio only if his massive salary was protected. And the madness of RTE means that even if he halves his workload, he will probably retain that big pay cheque. Oddly it looks like in this instance, RTE's recruitment racket and inflated salary policy might work in favour of the viewer, if it gets this guy off our screen's on Friday night.

Agree that the show should go recorded and have a much shorter running time. But of course since it's a vehicle for ad and raffle money, that will not happen. It's gone from being the mirror on Irish society and a conversation starter to nothing more than one man's country music and misery porn obsession, which also serves as a great ad revenue generator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭SimonTemplar

The combination of light entertainment and serious heavy hitting topics should be retired. Emulate the American late night show format, half the running time, keep it light entertainment, and leave the more serious topics for a new or existing show.

That way they can keep the brand name and the longest running show record while still giving it the big revamp it needs.

Another vote for Tommy - he'd be great fun on the Toy Show and as that's the only one I ever watch, he gets the vote.

Tommy has proved himself with his own show which was always a good watch, he can talk seriously on subjects, when before his show I'd thought he'd make a laugh out of EVERYTHING. But he doesn't, he can get deep and meaningful, and can throw in a bit of humor to break the tension, but he also is willing to sit and just listen, something Tubridy is incapable of doing

When Gay stepped down in 1999 that was the time to gracefully retire it. Gay was equally adept at light entertainment and heavy subjects. No one could touch Gay.

Will be interested to see how Angela Scanlon gets on. Potential there I think but of the options given Tiernan is a proven popular host at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,717 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

    John Creedon

I think he is popular with our generation but some in older generations wouldnt be a fan of him, that blasphemy stuff runs deep for some people and RTE always avoid controversy where possible.

He may well get it one day but I doubt it will happen on this cycle. In any case I wouldnt like to see him get it, I just want to see more of his own show because it works so well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭ireallydontknow

As others have said, it seems inconceivable it won't be a woman. For one, RTE has promoted many women recently. But could they really justify, in this political climate, locking in a man for another decade? But who? Clare Byrne could hardly be less suited. And O'Callaghan is blandness personified.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,717 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

    John Creedon

I think for those reasons alone it will 100% be a woman, they dont want accusations of sexism by appointing a man even if he is the best person for the job.

In the last couple of years they have lurched to placing females in positions where there already was a gender balance on the program to begin with ie Dobbo & Sharon became Catriona Perry & Keelin Shanley, Miriam & David McCullough became Miriam and McInerney. Its like they are trying to right the wrongs of the past or something. There must be men in there thinking they dont have any chance of going for a new position when they see RTE actively pursuing a policy of gender imbalance.

Graham Norton should host it at some stage in his career

Clearly you'e never dealt with her in real life. Miriam "Don't you know who I am?" O'Callaghan. I wouldn't give her the steam off my pi$$.

Gaybo hosted it for 30+ years, could we not get a cutting edge graphics company in and some sort of Artificial Intelligence company, to make a hologram of Gay, and have the hologram ask the questions and let the guest answer them? There should be enough examples of the following phrases on tape to recreate them:

    Roll it there Roisin

    Tell me about your Mother

Is this your first time in Ireland?

They might even be able to splice together individual words together to form new questions.

    John Creedon

He would have to give up interviewing all the Hollywood A list as theres no way that set are coming to Ireland on their media tours because their promoters know they already tap the Irish audience via the BBC.

Plus RTE couldnt come anywhere near to matching his current wage which was reported as 3.75 million for 2019 which is about 4.4 million in euros. He aint taking a pay cut down to 500,000 to interview the guests on the Late Late

    John Creedon

Plus he lives in the UK. He's hardly going to fly over every Friday night just to host the LLS.

D 4bes: Graham, do you want to be the new host of the LLS, we'll offer you a million a year.

Graham: So, you want me to take a 3million paycut, for a show with a smaller audience, with guests you found in the RTE canteen, versus my current Hollywood A-Listers, with a longer commute? Let me think about that...

Give Ryan something harmless in the televisual spectrum to assuage his ego, which is so dissociated with the real world, tame down his wages a bit. He's had his big feed from the trough. Send in John Creedon who would bring something back of the Late Late of old times. The man is likeable because he's sincere and he puts the yards in.

Tommy Tiernan for me. He proved he can do the big interview on his show. Miriam O'Callaghan is a desperate interviewer but anyone's better than RT. Tubs revels in misery and cant interview politicians.

So you all have no doubt the show will continue?

I shouldn’t have a say in this, because last week was the first time in months I saw any of it.

there was a lady in vibrant pink impersonating a 1950’s standard lamp. She had a strange accent, I didn’t have a clue what she was saying. I thought she wasn’t worth the effort of attuning my ear to her accent so I moved on.

I voted for John creedon but in reality he’s not got a hope because well he’s a man has the second reason is he’s actually talented and would be good at it. I’ve no issue with the next presenter being a women if they are the best for the job and it’s amazing how given how many people work in rte, there level of on air talent both male and female is poor.

I will say I got a laugh out of ray darcy being on there because unlike the third secret of Fatima it’s a mystery how he gets paid so much for being generous, he’s poor at his job.

    John Creedon

Well Sillius, it looks like only I got the reference. (assuming it is D & D).

Anyway, I voted John Creedon. Like Derek Davis, he has a presence, and seems to be able to talk to anyone. I don't want political interrogations, I want interesting guests that can be drawn out of themselves and encouraged to tell us about themselves. Throw in a few jesters and the (very) occasional serious chat, without trying to make the guest cry for the camera. So, definitely John Creedon, and if poor old Derek was still here, I'd be torn.
