So I live in a street in the center of town and there's this local elderly lady who's a bit of an eccentric. Anyone within a mile of where I live knows her. She spends all of her days walking around babbling to herself and joining in conversations with people uninvited. She has a habit of rocking into restaurants and bars and just having the bants with the customers and swiping drinks. When I moved into the place where I'm renting I was warned of her... but she's harmless. She has a habit of flinging her unwanted stuff into people's gardens and bins and whatnot but other that that (and the fact she'll accost anyone she meets with random conversation starters) she is harmless...

BUT.

There's this prick for want-of-a-better-word on the road who started a petition to have her evicted. He went around to all the gaffs and got signatures. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and a police van shows up outside the woman's home and they baton in her door and bring her out. Wtf? Can people just be sectioned like that? It's been almost three weeks and I'm missing the familiar sight of this lady! She was a bit mad but I was fond of her. She'd leave these weird concoctions of food on your doorstep if she liked you and she'd fill our green bin with her empty bottles of Buckfast, but she was our eccentric, goddammit! And I want her back.

How can I get someone out of the madhouse?

There's a couple of odd balls around our town as well and I always thought it was great how the community kind of looked after them. Like you say they would be wandering around in their own world but harmless, the chippers would give them free chips if they walked in, people would say hello as they passed etc. There's something sweet about a community leaving them to their own devices but keeping an eye on them at the same time

That being said, one took a **** on the floor of a shop and another went after a young glass collector with a pool cue in a pub. So yeah, maybe your mad oul one overstepped the mark and went from quirky and heartwarming and took a piss on his doorstep or something

Hazard to herself and others. Go have a peek inside her house, no doubt its a hoarders episode.

Throw her in that van and off to the funny farm. a quick de-lousing, a hose down, and some happy pills. Finger painting tomorrow 9-12. Some liquid pudding and circular wandering 2-5. Then back to bed. Best for her.

Sure its as good as my own life.

The haz-mat crew can then go about emptying her gaff. She was only going to cause a fire, flood, or infestation anyway.

So I spoke to her neighbours and they reckon it was yer man down the street with the petition along with her three sons and they had her committed. Now the three sons (who never ever visited her) are taking possession of her gaff, which judging by house prices is probably worth north of 650K.

It is very difficult to get someone committed in this country. Plus if she was committed that doesn't deprive her of the right to her property.

It's almost next to impossible to commit someone against their will into both the public and private mental health sector in this country.

Guards and medics don't or can't rock up to someone's gaff and bundle them into a van either.

There's no way a petition can remove someone from their home either.

Would you call the the friendly neighbour with the petition and ask for contact details for either the sons or your lady?

you can't have your mother committed. only doctors can do that. her release is nothing to do with her kids. their permission is not required.

I'd say mental health needs to be factored in here. From the OP, it sounds like she had some mental health problems which can be unsettling to people because it's an unknown element to them. If they have kids, they might feel uncomfortable having their kids interact with someone like that. If they're disrupting things, it can be a nuisance. Not saying I agree with it, especially if she's harmless but some people aren't accustomed to eccentric people.

Ah, so her family was involved. Families are often a touchy issue. I think you'd need to know their background to have full context, but what can you do. Perhaps they were ashamed of her, or they wanted her property or something. Could be that they decided it was unsafe for her. Sounds like a sad story.

For all you don't know you can't be forced to a nursing home if compenis mentis. If not CM its psych and that has Trubunal. You cannot be put in prison without a judge even remand and you still have legal rights\ access to solicitor if on remand and no one can steal your house

Hey op, pay no attention to that so called petition. No one can get committed over that.

That said siblings can sorta get someone committed. If someone clearly has mental issues, like after a short conversation you know they suffer from something, siblings can say they are a danger to themselves or others. That's where a grey area comes.

Truth be told you are probably only getting half the story. She may have done something to bring this on.

She's probably in a home or living with somebody else.

Some people can't deal with people being a tad odd or eccentric. They just can't deal with people like that.

They don't get to decide anything. The story seems to be a complete fabrication. Feeling uncomfortable isn't enough to have someone held involuntarily against their will.
