Anyone here have problems selling privately by Ebay to UK? With the cost of parcel post, last thing you need is it coming back. It's pre brexit since I sold some bits across the pond.

Two days for a CD from Belfast last week. Posted Wednesday 3rd, got it Friday 5th.

I wonder if someone could clarify.

The post above gives a Taric code 8 digits long.

I thought Ireland was using a 10 digit code ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,716 ✭✭✭NewbridgeIR

yes, https://www.anpost.com/Commerce/SME/InternationalSending/Find-a-TARIC-Commodity-code - will generate it. two more zeroes at the end i.e. The item code for import to Ireland is 4910000000

It helps to check that first and tell the sender what code to use.

I had a package sent back early last week due to insufficient information on the import declaration.

The tracking shows the last stop in Dublin, so not sure where to go from here. I was going to wait until it gets back to the sender but it hasn't left Dublin or no update on it. I wouldn't mind but the item was $150, so wasn't cheap.

What has others done? Do I contact the sender?

If the sender sent it with USPS they probably can't tell much from their side either. There is a contact number on the A Post website, you could try them and see if they know where it is. Chances are it's awaiting a flight back to the US. At that value you should have sent via courier, or with AddressPal

What's the story with buying something on eBay from America where it says fee includes country duty etc does that mean I won't have to pay more to an post when it lands here?.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,716 ✭✭✭NewbridgeIR

Is it being shipped via "Ebay International Shipping" or "Ebay Global Shipping"?

If so, no extra fees. And delivery will almost be certainly via DPD.

I have a package of video game electronics coming from the US soon.

What should I tell the seller regarding Tariff / TARIC codes or what else should I watch out for?

It would be very convenient if the info was in the first post to save us having to read so many replies by the way.

    Thanks in advance.

I wasn't looking for the TARIC number but I figured it out looking through this thread. I thought HS Tariff codes were different to TARIC codes but theyre the same.

Also found An Post's TARIC Code finder posted earlier in the thead:

The last time I had video game accessories coming from the US I got them to fill out a CN23 form and put the TARIC code on that and it got through no problem.

Would the An Post Address pal facility be of any use?

I think they would do customs clearance as part of the process.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 Dammij

I'm not sure if it's any use, my case was different but my solution might be the answer.

I imported a couple of things from the UK.

    1) A specialist tea

    2) A gift from an art gallery shop and

    3) A kitchen gadget

All three were returned for "error in customs declaration" (i.e. taric code!).

I emailed all three and told them to resend the items but alter the

taric code to make it a 10 digit number just by adding two zeros to the code.

I know that was a very crude method but it worked in all three cases.

The tea seller gave me a refund as a reward! It seems he's had hundreds being returned and

this was the issue all along!

Re: An Post. I was majorly angry at trying to communicate with An Post.

Messaging them through Facebook was best of all - §Very friendly - Very helpful - Very quick to answer!

    Good luck with your efforts!

If you use addresspal for the UK, you'll pay both UK vat as well as Irish Vat, plus both UK local postage/delivery, possible duty, and addresspal delivery and admin fee, again with Irish VAT on these. Could end up doubling the goods cost.

I posted this as a suggestion for importing from US.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,501 ✭✭✭deezell

Same thing applies, local taxes will be added as its nominally being delivered to a local address, local delivery charge will apply also, all before addresspal delivery , duties, vat on everything, and their admin fee.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭dam099

True but US Sales taxes are quite a bit lower than UK VAT, they seem to use New Jersey for receiving parcels so a quick google suggests 6.625% rather than 20%

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,112 ✭✭✭✭blade1

One thing to be wary of using addresspal as it happened me.

Item arrived damaged and seller wouldn't accept responsibility and said if it was damaged when it arrived at it's US destination, they should have refused it.

What is going on with parcels being returned by customs to original sender?

I have had two parcels in the past month returned to sender. One parcel, I could probably understand as it was an order from America and they probably don't ship to Ireland all that much.

I sent an email to customs about the first parcel and they gave a detailed reply about EU legislation of items originating from outside the EU. All items are subject to electronic custom clearance for calculating custom charges and the electronic custom clearance was missing information e.g the taric code. This new legislation was implemented on 01st July 2021.

But a second parcel from Amazon UK. All items in this order was sold and shipped by Amazon, so I would expect a huge online retailer like Amazon to do things correctly.

I haven't had an issue until now, 2024 and I'm always online shopping. I'm also waiting on something small I ordered from Canada since the second week of January but that was probably sent back but there wasn't any tracking details for that one.

Is anyone else having the same issue?

That taric code stuff is just bullshit. They've implemented electronic scanning machines ahead of schedule and there are big problems with the machines.

I think maybe you're just unlucky with the Amazon one. Amazon didn't seem to be affected by the issue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭fun loving criminal

I don't know what happened with my Amazon parcel. It's been stuck in customs for a week and all of a sudden I get a message from Amazon today thanking me for returning the items and a refund has been issued. I didn't return it, so that leaves customs who sent it back!!!

MOD: This was moved from Consumer issues as there was already a thread here. Please observe new charter

I have a customs charge to pay on a package from the US, a legit charge in the tracking info, not a scam SMS.

When I click view customs charge it says "Service unavailable at this time. Please try again later."

Anyone know how long it's been down?

At worst I can go to the post office and pay there I suppose but it would be handy to do it online.
