If you look at previous years Donnelly rarely played beyond 50 mins in matches and from what I was told he was having huge difficulty getting his asthma under control. It seems like this is finally sorted as he's playing almost every match to the final whistle and I think he will only get better as he builds his endurance by playing more. It was great to see him having the quickness of thought to pivot and whip the ball across the square. Donnelly also mad a huge dash to block Daithí Burke I think it was, who was trying to make a big clearance near the start of the madness in the corner.

Just read the Mark Townsend book on Brother Damien Brennan. Very good read. He gave so much. Sad ending I found.

When I saw Eoin Murphy go down with a head injury after the Flynn goal, I thought he was doing a Nicky Quaid and trying to stop Galway's momentum. Henry obviously thought the same. Looking back on it, he was not struck by the ball but may have hit his head off the turf as he rolled backwards

Brookville I didn’t see Denis Walsh ,Niall Rowe and the rest of the lads mentioned in the program. Could I ask where you got the information.thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,747 ✭✭✭brookville

They weren't listed on the programme but were on the pitch celebrating. Richie reid, richie hogan, shane murphy,Darren Brennan and des dunne were also there.

Silly comment from Jackie but you've got to dislike Cantwell's smugness when talking to hurling greats about a game they've played at the highest level. Her role is to direct the conversation not provide empty insights on a game she knows little about. Joe Canning IMO is a really impressive pundit. Really says it as he sees it and, for example, called out O'Donoghues throw for Limerick against Cork. When Cantwell, with that twee, "I'm one of the lad's smile" tried to call Buckley's goal for steps Joe dead panned 'No, it was a legitimate goal" - brilliant! The only reason she doesn't get more push back on her comments is that the boys are always worried about the P45 form RTE if they shut her down.

BTW we seem to have joined the throwing. No better or worse than anyone else but it's depressing that its allowed.

Billy Ryan gets some crtisism here and I agree with some of it. He always seems on the cusp of something great. But we need his pace and defender's are afraid of that. He dragged defenders all over the place against Galway especially for Wally's goal which my new favourite pundit Joe C highlighted at half time.

Sound Brookville. I like Denis Walsh glad he’s on the squad.

Agree on the camogie, fixtures changed and the competition changed after it started, semi finals at the start now quarter finals.some teams had played 5 games when others had only played 1 crazy stuff, hurling draws made but no sign of camogie draws or dates.

He without doubt did a Nickie Quaid on it 😅 but in fairness Galway will be rueing not showing similar game management instincts for the lead up to the Buckley goal.

Usually could take or leave speeches but fair play to Eoin Cody for his last Sunday, really good sign of him to mention Teddy McCarthy with nothing prepared and after such a high octane game.

Evan Cody,Conor heary and niall Brennan also there. Denis walsh has bags of ability and even having him around the panel this year will be a help. He missed alot of hurling. I watched him a few times for dunnamaggin last year and he needs to bring a bit more aggression to his game but hopefully he will get there. It was very noticeable shane walsh has really bulked up in the last year. He didn't see much action this year. Tullaron should be able to give the local championship a good rattle if the shamrocks are without Joey and fennelly and are also out of a coach at the moment.

I am following KK hurling a long time and I would back any KK hurler to the hilt because of the effort they put in to represent our county but I. Just say I think Henry is in an awful situation at present. I felt sorry for him last Sunday watching him looking at his nephew picking up the cup. Henry should have being over with the KK panel and not on the other side. Last year it was all Cody’s fault that Henry wasn’t the incoming manager. By Christ you would never see Cody trying to bring down KK. One of our greatest hurlers should not be doing this and it shows on his face on the sideline how much it’s hurting him. I hope to God for Henry’s sake it doesn’t end up as a KK v Galway final because surely he can’t be in a situation trying to stop his own nephew and clubman captaining KK to win an All Ireland. It does not make sense for a KK man to be in this situation but he choose this and he may live to regret it. Well done Derek you didn’t take the silver elsewhere

"Henry should have being over with the KK panel and not on the other side. Last year it was all Cody’s fault that Henry wasn’t the incoming manager"

Henry was asked to get involved with kilkenny at different grades but declined. He was asked in to be a selector with the seniors but declined and finally Henry was contacted at the end of 2021 to come on board as selector because 22 was Cody's last year. Henry consulted with Richie o neill and declined and ran to galway for the big money. That's why Cody was sore last year. Henry is smart enough to know when he was going to galway he would be coming up against his former team mates, clubmates and relations so it's hard to have much sympathy.

I was hesitant about commenting on this subject but have to say this post expresses my very own sentiments. It's such an awkward and upsetting situation, it should never have happened. It was a bad decision by Henry no matter the reason behind it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,735 ✭✭✭Grats

A composed and controlled view. And correct in my opinion. The sooner he comes back home the better. Cody was blamed last year but Henry behaved no different this year in the aftermath of the final whistle. It's uncomfortable, he's clearly uncomfortable - he can't even congratulate his fellow Kilkenny colleagues, let alone his very own club colleagues and family. Very sad.

All true. I think Paul's death has taken a lot out of him too.

He's aged a lot too. I can't imagine my nephew lifting the Bob O'Keeffe and being on the other side. It looks like there's a bit of distance between all the KK players and Henry now. Eoin Cody had no special few words for 'my uncle Henry' etc but he thought of Teddy McCarthy.

It's a huge distance from South Kilkenny to Galway too when you've a young family. I wonder what the money is alright.

Mick Fennelly took over Offaly when at a low ebb and realistically knew they'd never rival Kilkenny. David Herrity the same in Kildare.

Eddie Brennan in a similar setup with Laois, I suppose there was a brief period in 2019 after they beat Dublin when it looked like a mini breakthrough might happen but it was short lived. Taking on Galway was a different kettle of fish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭tbiggertycome

Henry and Derek shook hands the Kilkenny players were celebrating that was no place for Henry to be and he knew it. Don't know what more he could have done on Sunday.

Eoin Murphy struck himself on the head with his own stick trying to save Flynns goal. Doctors then had to observed for signs of concussion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,271 ✭✭✭Marrooned

I was trying to figure out what happened Murph I couldn’t believe that he would fake an injury and I thought to myself that he must have hit himself somehow. That explanation will do me.

People involved with fixtures too busy elsewhere to concentrate on properly fixing the games !!! 😣

Underage Development. Delighted that Michael Fennelly is leading the county-wide program. I hope that there are incentives (free admittance to NP for e.g.) and involvement for primary and secondary teachers to continue their great tradition of developing underage players in healthy exercises including hurling. Underage has to be fun or the kids will drop out. Just adapt whatever games the kids are into. To address our 40+ year athletic deficit vs footballing counties and our more recent rating as the worst stick passers in the top 8, we need to figure what favoured games will help address these critical issues.

Our athletic deficit has been exploited by Wexford, Galway and all the Munster teams repeatedly at all levels in the last 10 minutes of every game. Their higher energy levels and running off the shoulder is a natural outcome of playing high-level football or basketball. Maybe we could experiment with strong Leinster colleges & clubs playing our college and club teams in football and in return we would play hurling with them. I was a classmate in Kierans with the ‘71 AI winning hurling team and with the ’73 AI winning Gormanston football team. The step up in fitness and off the ball running in Gormo internal leagues was a sharp change from football and hurling in Kk and Kierans. I had won Kk minor football with Dicksboro before Gormo and Kk minor hurling with OLG after.

Stick Passing Deficit: Cody had no confidence in our recent teams’ ability to pass; just go direct and rely on aerial strength. Accurate stick, racquet, golf or table tennis passing requires the alignment of feet and shoulders; normally a right-handed stick pass is off your left foot and a left-handed stick pass is off your right foot. The right-hand grip is important and varies in hurling, tennis, golf, table tennis and baseball. If you played & were coached in the first 4 and experimented as Keher was rumored to do,  you would understand how to get accuracy, spin, a hook or a fade by changing your grip on either right or left side; ; make sure you practice on grass because spin on grass is vicious to read and a table tennis or tennis player with strong wrists can kill a ball & prevent bounce on a hard June surface. Wrist strengthening gadgets have been around for 60 years; probably should be donated to all schools. IT stores sell them in NJ. If you recall DJ grabbed the hurl short to about the length of a tennis racquet to score his goals; a sliced shot does not require a swing so you won’t be as easily hooked and you can swerve the ball right or left with a rapid change in grip. Tommy W had a unique way of getting spin which landed in front of the FF line and caused havoc a few times; e.g., 2009 opening goal opportunity for Henry.

Clare Offloading: With Clare now working out an overhead offloading to combat Lk’s swarming tactics, I notice in the U.S. how Americans at all levels have powerful arm & shoulder strength; typically needed for pitchers and quarter backs. In fairgrounds you see kids testing themselves with speed & strength of pitching. I was incredulous when I first saw the speed of a pitch up close.

I don't think you read my post correctly. I never suggested Henry needed to do anything. Nobody is suggesting that he join in the Kilkenny players celebrations!!!!

Probably fare to say all of those guys probably left those counties in better shape than when they arrived. Dont think Galway can say the same tbh.

One pretty stupid comment on here about what has taken a lot out of Henry over the last year, obviously it has and would to anyone but why it had to be mentioned after a game of hurling and in a bit of a snide comment about Henry is a little bit sad. Henry acted exactly how anyone who played against him or followed his career would have expected last week, he will fight to the very limit of his capability for any team he represents.

Don't know what universe Eoin Cody would have mentioned the opposition manager in his winning speech last Sunday either, no matter what relation he was to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Jock_Ewing

You hadn't the courage to reply to me directly.

There's nothing wrong in mentioning burying your brother would take a lot out of a man. Have you some sort of fear of mentioning death?

As for Eoin Cody, yes you're right right about the speech. If you're quoting stuff from my posts have the balls to say it to me directly.

Why would it take courage to reply to you chap? I'm just giving my opinion, your post was snide, and you were having a go at Henry in it, at least be honest with yourself, that's all I'm saying, doesn't matter how many profiles you feel you need to attack me from

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Jock_Ewing

True enough, but they had more scope.

Henry's core group from 2017 is ageing. It seems to be a problem for over 30 years bringing successful underage players to senior in Galway. Hard to fathom it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Jock_Ewing

Chap🤣 Profiles? You get your chip off your shoulders.

Henry is open for criticism as Galway manager. Besides I didn't even criticise him. I said his brother dying took a lot out of the man. They were close. And I said what an awful lot of people are saying, he's aged a lot.

What is your real problem here?? Is it something to do with Henry, or are you not happy? Is it another post of mine you disliked? Or do you think you can bully new posters? What is this with profiles attacking me crap? Because my posts are fairly mild.

Well just look at your post, you referred to the unimaginable tragedy that impacted his family last year, which is fair enough in isolation, as I said in my posts it would have an obvious impact on anyone, but then you said that his nephew didn't mention him in his speech after a hurling match, the combination of the two is what bothered me, thats just my opinion, chap, I'll end it there, but you carry on
