I think he's in his early 20's, not sure if I'd come across well at that age!

What ever his motivations and if its all acting or not , it is throwing a very positive spotlight on Farming and really getting the public on the side of farmers , a feat , neither Nationwide here or country file in the UK has managed despite being their remit .

Haven't seen any of the series. But from the little clips that are floating on free to air. He was kind of being made fun of how everything was new to him, ie urban life and general life. Now he's grown up more and has his own contracting and farming business. He's on a par now with any farmer. He probably resents how he was made fun of and probably how he had to play along as. It'd be a rebellious streak now hidden down there now.

it's a bit more manufactured and like Top Gear in the new series, particularly the escapade with the picking machine and the forced rivalry between Jeremy and Caleb, but hey it's still entertaining enough.

I had a binge watch of Season 2 a few weeks ago, Season 3 I turned off. Too much emotional guff between cows and pigs etc. going out the gate. Lisa seems to be being pushed to centre stage more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,756 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

Yeah, the emotional stuff. Pre-recorded so unsure had they won peoples hearts yet. Turns out there was no need for it, that type of viewership know exactly where their food comes from.

Interestingly enough without fantasy farming as opposed to real farming which i suppose is a goldmine there would be no exorbitant price jump for grass cattle in the spring which in my opinion would collapse the spring store trade & fall in the lap of the cartel,no record prices for land sales either, when my father bought top quality land in the sixties land was close to worthless,I feel Jeremy is a fantastic ambassador for agriculture.

Well I watched the first 4 episodes of season 4 from 6am to 10am this morning. What a great farmer and worker Harriet is. She would put many a man to shame. A pity she is not on for longer. Would love to see more of her. I do however not do Tic Tok and have no intention of either.

I'd wadger a bet that Clarkeson has made his money back from Amazon etc a few times over than what he paid for the estate the first day. It's got to be admired.

The last dry day for a while, there ain't many that could stay watching television this morning.

I know, I was trying to be sarcastic. Every time I read my comments, I believe im after turning in to my father.

that happens a lot. Cranky and awkward are common traits.

Sat down to watch it this evening and burst out laughing at the grunting, sighing, swearing, and inability to do anything physical without some kind of noise, including the occasional fart. Looked around expecting the same reaction, only to find the wife and kids staring back at me.

    Stone faced.

    All of them.

Including the youngest baby. She's three years of age.

I think there might be some bemused/irritated tractor dealers after the 2nd episode.

I know the area he lives in very well,it would be one of the less picturesque part of the Cotswolds in that it is fairly flat & more big commercial arable farms in that area, the hill areas are stunningly beautiful with breathtaking villages & towns,I have been to the pub & obviously it's very commercial but well worth a visit.I'm not sure Jeremy is as loved in his own area as we love him,the blowing up of the original farmhouse on his land is not a good subject to bring up with locals,I believe it was very nice & the family that farmed there were very well respected. He is liked by the horsey set as in hunting, polo, racing I gather.

Since season 1, I enjoyed how he highlighted the difficulties in dealing with local councils and all the planning hoops he had to jump through. However, he said the only reason he bought the farm was for the inheritance tax benefits, and has constantly railed against Labour's policy of taxing very rich farmers.
In the 2021 interview with The Times, he stated that avoiding inheritance tax was "the critical thing" in his decision to buy land. He also wrote on the Top Gear website in 2010 that among the sensible reasons for buying a farm was that "The government doesn't get any of my money when I die."

I agree he has brought much needed publicity to how little profit there is farming in the UK, even with 400+ hectares, but I think the show is overly scripted. I understand it's an entertainment show but it's pure fantasy farming now. I appreciated the addition of Harriet, as she got stuck into things, but she’s no longer around. I struggle to believe that Caleb is genuinely as backward as he appears to be - or rather as Wilman portrays him. His apparent ignorance of anything beyond the farming world appears to be very contrived.

I watch Harry Metcalfe's farming videos on Youtube from time to time, he's another very wealthy farmer but at least he knows his stuff and takes farming reasonably seriously.

I am currently watching a dubbed French reality show where a family based in Paris are selling high end property from around France to wealthy clients,it is dramatic & contrived of course but the beauty of France is my interest,no farmer is watching Clarkson for tips on farming they are watching it for there general interest in land & livestock, the first reality show I ever watched was the Kardashians which was utterly moronic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

Harry Metcalfe started off as a grain buyer and farmer on rented ground before he started Evo magazine. He done a HND in agriculture.

    He's a bona fide farmer.

Clarkson is an eejit. Though I think his interest in the farming community is genuine. A lot of the stuff in the programme is done for views and that kind of annoys me a bit. His reasons for buying the farm has kind of blotted his copybook in light of the Labour gov decision on inheritance tax - which was incredibly badly handled.

To me, Charlie is the star of the show.

I work with a couple of French people. At lunch today this was raised. They look at French news and their was no mention of it. They had to look at BBC and rte to see what all the fuss was about!

    I spotted Charlie's company name in episode1: https://ceresrural.co.uk/

Do agri consultancy companies like that exist in Ireland? I've never heard of a similar type service

I have no doubt we haven't seen the last of Harriet.

Do you think he might be just acting the eejit?

I notice on episode 2 that he mentions that he is getting much more in UK payments now for planting wild flower meadows. A result of Brexit?
