Received a fine in the post for not paying toll, even though I paid the toll

I was driving to Dublin on the M50 a couple of weeks ago and paid the Northbound toll.

The sign on the approach said 2.90 for cars (I'm 99% sure it didn't specify classification of car but I'm open to correction.

I put 3.00 exact into the basket and the gate opened.

I did the same thing on the return journey.

Now I get a letter in the post saying the toll charge is 3.10 for my classification of car even though a) no sign specified this and b) the gate opened after I put in 3.00, and I'm being charged a further 6.10, which will rise to 41.50, if I don't pay the fine in a couple of days.

Has anyone dealt with this nonsense before?

You’re right about one thing. It’s complete nonsense.

What basket and gate? The M50 toll has no plaza.
I drove the M50 everyday for work and theres huge signs telling you the cost..

happened to me before, ring them up, they're usually quite decent to deal with I found

I thought the gates were gone from the M50?

Ring them and explain what happened. Offer to pay the 10c.

What I want to know is why the barriers would open if I hadn't put in the correct amount?

:pac: whatever road you were on, it wasn't the M50. Poor effort.

Are you confused about which motorway you were on? There are no barriers on the M50.

If you drove on the M50 and the Port Tunnel you need to pay 2 tolls.

€3 for the Tunnel (off-peak) and €3.10 for the M50.

I'm guessing you paid the Tunnel toll at the barrier but then ignored the massive signs before the bridge and thats why you've received a fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,673 ✭✭✭User1998

You probably went through a toll with gates outside of Dublin as well as the toll on the M50 in Dublin. There are a few tolls with gates on the approach to Dublin. The toll on the M50 needs to be paid online

Yep think the port tunnel is actually part of the m50

Again and please remember this is the second thread on the subject, there's no barrier on the M50.

Everyone's been harsh on the OP - there are two tolls on the M50 - one at the port tunnel entrance (city centre side) which does have a toll both and barriers and another between Liffey Valley & Blanchardstown junction which does not have a toll both.

OP - likely you drove through both and only paid one. There are plenty of signs on the road, but if you missed them unfortunately you'll now need to pay. If you did a return journey, expect a second one soon also.

OP could you be mixing this up with another road, the M1 or M3. You've got a charge for the M50 which does not have toll gates where you either have a tag or you pay online, by phone or in some retail outlets. If it was the Dublin tunnel the fee is either €3 or €10 depending on the time of day.
Pay it quickly before it gets very expensive.

Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey shore
    Prepared to cross the line
I could see the bridge was lined with bears
    But I didn't have a dog-goned dime
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck
"We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll"
So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight
I says "Let them truckers roll, 10-4"

But in saying that, the OP got the fine for going through the other one without paying.

I'm wrong, the Op came in on the M4 through the Kilcock toll and then continued north bound on the M50.

He paid the M4 toll but not the M50.

    Or this is wind up.

I think it's the M4 I'm thinking of; where I remember putting money into the baskets.

The memories of the toll on the m50 gives me shivers.

Need to do away with the one at Ringsend and go the same as the M50.

I think the tunnel one serves to control numbers within tunnel if I'm not mistaken

OK I've just looked up the M50 toll and I see that it has not booths or barriers. I must've went through it not knowing I had to pay online in order to use it.

Where do you travel to from the M4? If you joined the M50 Northbound there's a toll for crossing the bridge.

There's some pretty big signs too.

Yeah, that rings a bell. I was a bit lost and stressed out, and that combined with being unaware about tolls, probably resulted in me going through it without thinking.

In my limited experience of driving to Dublin, I thought all tolls had barriers and booths. I wasn't aware you had to pay online to use some of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 743 ✭✭✭KeithTS

OP, you can sign up for a video account for the M50.
There's no monthly charges and it automatically debits your card when you go through. If you intend to drive out that way again, it's worth signing up just so you don't have to remember to pay anything. Also knocks 50c or something off the charge.

Anyone that misses all 40-odd signs (many in purple, and others painted on the road) when passing through the m50 toll, really should take up their free PRSI eye test.

Give them a ring and tell them what happened they might cut you some slack, whatever you do don't ignore it as it will rise very quickly.

Sh!t happens op, give them a ring they will likely let you just pay the toll and clear the fine.

Keep an eye out for road signs next time

They probably get the "I didn't know I had to pay" line every day. Better just paying the small penalty fee.

They probably do but from experience they're very good to deal with.

I've a tag but on a few occasions I've been driving a rental or a loaner and forgotten to pay and when I ring them up they've waived the fine and let me pay just the toll.

I think what happened to OP is he went 88MPH in his delorean.

But seriously ring them up asap and pay whatever they ask by credit card over the phone. The toll is typically 3 euro then 6 euro, then 46 euro, then 146 euro. It goes up the longer you do not pay. Often if you ring 3 euro is ok.

As others have said register for a free video account if you are an in frequent user with bad eyesight.

They do but from reading posts here they are also easy to deal with once you make contact. IIRC they'll usually remove the penalty fines if you set up a video account and pay the tolls you missed.

OP, take a listen back to a recent live line with Joe 'wash your hands" Duffy, he had a call from a very distressed but quite dim motorist who didn't pay her toll, her little forgetfulness started at €100, numerous letters, summonses , failed court appearances and Zero sympathy from those who follow the thread, her forgetfulness ended at €8,000 and rising owing and car seizure, and pathetic crocodile tears . But I must admit, one of the funniest day of posts on any thread on Boards in quite some time.

    Pay up and move on.
