In 16th place with 1 point

    The purple tin

Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country

Again, much like the Die Hard music from before it this just doesn’t really call out to me that I must play this game. I found this very boring if I’m honest.

And in FIRST Place, picking up 16 points…

Placebo - Every You Every Me (F1 2000)

Cracking track this, just a great song even if it’s not massively associated with gaming it was very hard to justify anything else submitted being ahead of this… so basically I don’t have to. A great pick.

So I've been told. I don't really play computer games, but there's a big fan in the house, and he often plays this from it. It's one of the game tunes he plays on the regular that I don't hate.

 Genuinely thought I was coming last here, Placebo can be a bit of a marmite band and I figured there was no way I was beating the Crash Bandicoot theme!!

I actually had a completely different song chosen initially (from googling the Grand Theft Auto soundtracks) but figured I'd stick with something I remembered from a game I had actually played, way back in the days of my (second-hand) Playstation (the only Sony console I've ever had!)

    So folks.....

Did you play to my tastes here and go pop music or country (some of the more disliked genres around these neck of the woods)? Or perhaps you just played it straight and went with stuff you liked but wouldn’t normally… some examples for me.

I guess we will find out at 9pm tomorrow night ;)

Have we done a Best Video Game Tournament.

    That'd be a fun one.

I doubt my limited knowledge of Video Games would make me a very good host for it, so just throwing the idea out there...

Been thinking about doing this. just didn't think they're would be enough interest. If you haven't played ya game It's not like a song you haven't heard that you can click play on

Yeah, thats true, its a bit more niche in that sense, but then again there have been greatest movie tournaments where nobody has seen all the movies, and a lot of the time would vote based on synopsis or whatever, which could work with games also (vote for the one you'd be most interested in playing if you don't know either kind of deal). There'll be enough mass appeal games that people will be familiar enough with I think. The early rounds might be a bit slower as more obscure games get weeded out, but I'd say as the tournament goes on and you're left with some of the more heavy hitters it would be interesting to see what came out on top.

You don't necessarily need to ask for nominations, you could select the more obvious mass appeal stuff, and then have a couple wildcard rounds or something so people could nominate anything you may have missed that they feel deserved inclusion. I'd say there's a few FG regulars who'd be interested in playing something along those lines anyway. Is there a Video Gaming forum here? Could find some interested parties there too?

Final Fantasy 7 - Golden Saucer Theme

Tbh, you could have picked pretty much ANY other track from FF7 and it would likely have been top 3 material. Boss theme, Main battle theme, Jenova them, One Winged Angel just wins the category straight up - just not this one. I dunno, it’s so sickly sweet and squealing at points it just puts me off. It’s still much better than what most games have these days but yeah, you could have been much higher :P

After spending hours and hours in the Golden Saucer, I had to submit it. That or Rufus Welcome
I started playing the PS4 remake. Had a laugh when Barrett does the victory fanfare :D

    Belfast - Orbital

I suppose this is sort of relaxing. I’m just not gone on really long electronic instrumentals (unless it’s dance or trance) unfortunately so I sort of kept skipping this in the playthroughs and it ended up here.

    JP Liz V1

    Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma

I dunno, this one sort of started a good bit higher but started trending downwards towards the end of my relistens due to familiarity. It’s a fab song. Fantastic voice. I just preferred other entries I suppose.

    Necrina

    Rammstein – Du Hast

I expected this to be better, I really did. Maybe I was spoiled by Mein Heartz Brant but I just didn’t enjoy this as much as I expected to. This would have been the one Rammstein track I’d have heard of as well but while it was ok, it didn’t really do much else for me.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,163 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

In 10th place with 7 points

    Sawduck

Montserrat Caballe - O mio Bambino caro

Yeah I much prefer this to Nessun Dorma. It seems not too many are a fan of the opera genre :P This was a nice track and one I hadn’t listened to in a good while.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,163 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

In 9th place with 8 points

    Irish Aris

    Megadeth-Skin O' My Teeth

I did expect to get a bit of the heavier type of rock that I wouldn’t be as familiar with. There’s not really any comparison to Du Hast here imo, this is a much better song which is reflected in the rankings.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,163 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

In 8th place with 9 points

    Trigger

Just give me a reason – Pink ft. Nate Reuss

Pink is a great artist but actually I think it’s Nate that drags this song up another notch, just an incredible voice. The duet is on point too. I’d certainly listen to this genre regularly so I’m very familiar with the song but that doesn’t detract from it too much here. Very nice choice. And it’s not Pearl Jam – SHOCK HORROR :pac:
This song has also been submitted in another category... will it do better or worse there I wonder?

    TLC - No Scrubs

Again, another song I’m HUGELY familiar with and the genre in particular. Not sure what I can say really in the case of this track that hasn’t been said already, it’s certainly a choon. Has to lose marks because I’m so familiar with it mind. Not too many mind...

In 6th place with 11 points

    Deja Boo

The Black Crowes - She Talks To Angels

This is a fun little track that I just really enjoyed each listen through of this round. Very close to squeezing into the top 3 equation here, but missed out in the end unfortunately. Great choice!

DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans (Radio Edit) – Louder

This is a cracking track again, I had heard it a couple of times in passing but just really enjoyed it every time it came on in the listen throughs. The last 30 secs or so are awesome as well.

Always liked this track, even did a fundraising mime related dance to it. Thankfully all such evidence has been completely destroyed in a mysterious fire a few years ago…. :P Anyways yeah this was a real good entry and fitted the category well for the entrant given their normal tastes ;)

A Tom Petty cover… sneaky sneaky tpt :pac: I actually really like Miley Cyrus and I think she gets a lot of flack for her extra curricular activities but is in fact really talented. But…. I did not like this track. It was a poor cover and just all a bit safe and boring unfortunately.

Covers aren’t doing too well it seems… I really didn’t like this. Firstly it’s a rather poor knock off of the original and secondly… reggae :pac: I don’t mind some Marley from time to time but that’s about the height of my investigation into the genre.. yeah this just didn’t work for me.

Dance is one I'd listen to least, so went with that.

ShaneU has a nice little lead after three top 3 finishes in a row, 12 points ahead of both Trigger and JP Liz.

There's very very little seperating the other 5 places below that though and with only three rounds in the books, this is a marathon not a sprint...

Taking tomorrow off for Rikand's Walrus (also I'm getting muh second vaccine jab in the morning WOOOP!)

But I plan to do the musical round on Saturday evening circa 8pm if nothing else is going on in the forum...

Definitely my favourite round I think so very excited about it :D
