    Reboot….

When’s the last time somebody had an idea?

Just leave well enough alone FFS. Highlander is a classic.

Toss a coin to the Highlander :(

So many people have come and gone for this reboot, I am not holding my breath. They should try finding some original material instead of rebooting older movies.

Long while since I saw the Highlander movies, but can we really gripe about reboots when the original movies rebooted themselves already? IIRC the batshít 2nd film just retconned the whole first film on a whim.

I love the first Highlander movie. It's on my annual watchlist, even if it is not actually a great movie. It's absolutely one of those cases were the spinoffs and sequels made it worse, because they had to retcon so damn much.

Henry Cavill is one of those actors that has massively grown on me over the last few years, and I can't actually think of a movie or TV show that I didn't enjoy him in. He was a great Superman, even if the movies weren't great and he amazing in The Witcher.

I think with him cast as the lead there's a much higher chance the movie will actually happen now.

All the highlander movies except for the first one were ****e. However I was a fan of the series with Adrian Paul

Henry is bit devoid of charisma imho

    I'm actually all for this.

Feel the franchise deserves a proper expansion.

First one is a charming mess, and if we just ignore the rest maybe we'll see what should have been.

As much as I like Geralt, hoping for a bit more obvious levity from Cavill here. Lambert had a bit of silliness to him

Yeah ,I think he is positively woeful, unbelievably wooden in anything I've seen him in.

Couldn't disagree more. Great in Mission Impossible and Man from Uncle.

There isn't a ton to work with on the Witcher but he did a passable job with it.

As for Superman, I firmly believe he has been the best Superman we've had since Reeves.

Super, Another 80s classic dragged out and milked for some last drops of flavour to add to a standard formula entertainment product

Popular culture in the West is a zombie, its best "beloved" moments long dead but shuffling through the motions for the zombie customers who'll buy the action figure and franchise cap. "Yay!! I vaguely remember that this was a thing once so I looove it!!"

    Egyptian!
A man famous for only being capable of his own accent finally does a film set in Scotland and he’s cast as an Egyptian and called a Spaniard.
    Love the original movie.

The challenge with rebooting Highlander is finding a way to expand the mythology beyond the story of the original film. Aside from their belief that "there can be only one" etc, the immortals and their ages-old war against each other was not very well developed. Highlander II tried to explore their power and origin with results so disastrous that nobody attempted it again. The heart of the original film is just a story of a man cursed to live forever, which isn't a particularly original or interesting concept in itself. The rest of the film is just sword fights and '80s music montages. There's not a lot to reboot.

The real question is, will Cavill be able to pull off Christopher Lambert's iconic laugh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,908 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

Lambert had such a peculiar acting style which made it very memorable. Will be curious as to whether they opt for a Kurgun character again?

Considering the original this is my favorite movie ever and I loved the Adrian Paul series, a reboot like this is fantastic and I really hope it happens.

I love Henry. Hes a handsome nerd who really loves what he does.

I hope they keep it dark enough, I’d worry we’re going to see the Rock in it and it being w colourful romp

For those interested and haven't seen it, the original film is on Netflix (IE).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,854 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

I rewatched it a couple of years back with junior, as 80's movies go now I wouldnt describe it as top tier , at the time it was made it was a super cool film but the idea of someone living though history has been done to death with vampire films and shows, cant see any curiosity for this film

I won't see it as I hate when modern society puts their slant on old classics. It never works.

Agree 100% with that bit of your post.

Highlander was a highly enjoyable movie....albeit maybe a bit silly... they should have just stopped at that point though, and not bothered with any sequels.

Ps. The Queen soundtrack was great and definitely helped elevate it from just being another actioner.

'Highlander' was absolute junk. But very enjoyable junk nonetheless. The thing is you can't just reboot something like that. 'Highlander' managed to come together in spite of itself. It really should never have worked, and is dangerously close to so bad it's good territory, but through god knows what, it kinda does.

But that kind of thing you just cannot replicate.

If i recall it tanked at the cinema but established a return on VHS and that pushed the dog awful sequel years later. Lets not mention Connery cast as a Egyptian/Spaniard Jesus wept :D:D

Well, in fairness, the role of the Scot went to a Frenchman.

this is spectacularly accurate.... the theory of the Highlander is awesome, but that should never have been possible to do in the 80s.... i do love that movie.....

Someone having past lives is different to been immortal. Film look interesting anyway.

Glad Highlander has a male lead role, so it won't be some female lead film. Maybe they could tell the story of another character than Connor or Duncan, maybe fill in the blanks of 'Ramírez' life.

I watched Highlander last night on Netflix. God, it's an absolutely atrocious film, it's really more "so bad it's good" than being any sort of decent movie from any perspective imaginable. Horrible acting, cheesy, wafer thin story with no emotional depth, incoherent/nonsensical scenes aplenty.

I enjoyed it to a degree watching it with beers and friends but I absolutely would've turned it off if I was watching alone. I can't even begin to fathom how bad Highlander II and Highlander III must be, given the general consensus that the first only is "the only good one" by a wide margin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Highlander was better suited as the series and the series was great fun in much the same way as Stargate was able to grow, Highlander was able to put down some sort of proper mythos involving Immortals & Watchers.

Duncan, Joe, Amanda, Charlie, Methos, Horton, Fitzcairn some great characters human and Immortal.

I dunno, the second went so off the rails from a simple premise I applaud the nerve to do it at all. God knows sequels fall into a trap of just regurgitating the original - that can't be said of The Quickening.

I kinda agree with this. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and by all measures it's a pretty terrible film. The acting is abysmal and story almost non-existent but I still enjoyed it as it's totally over the top and very '80s'. I did have a few beers while watching though.

I get why it's a cult classic. It's a fun film but only because of how bad it is. I'm not sure a remake would be able to capture that.

Yes I also think the tv series surpassed the films

Drew McIntyre in WWE kinda has a Connor gimmick mixed with Braveheart maybe he'll get a cameo :p

{collider.com} Why 'Highlander' Is the Perfect Franchise to Reboot
As it turns out, there can in fact be more than one.

"Long story short: Not every announced reboot is a bad idea, and Highlander in particular seems ripe for another go. Even if it ends up being a straightforward remake of the original film with Cavill playing MacLeod, it’s hard to consider it sacrilege when the first film is full of cheaply-built sets, dicey accents, and plot points that don’t make a ton of sense. Sorry, Christopher Lambert superfans – it’s just not a terribly good movie. But it is an interesting movie, with some unique story components that could provide a solid foundation for an updated version of the tale. Ironically, in this case, there doesn’t have to be only one, and a Highlander do-over with Stahelski and Cavill onboard should be a reboot we welcome with open arms and upraised swords."
