Thought that was a par on 18? Where did the extra shot come from? Unplayable from the long grass behind the green?

That felt like one of the most frustrating rounds I have watched of his in a long time and I’d say he is raging after that round.

Not sure he could have drive the ball any better. Was putting himself in great positions off the tee and gave himself plenty of very makeable birdie chances. Didn’t make enough putts though.

His par 5 play is just terrible over the first two rounds and that’s nearly the difference in him being in contention. He will be gutted with those last 3 holes especially the sloppy bogey on 16 but he also gave himself a chance of par on 17 and was in a good position off the tee on 18.

On a afternoon which was very hard to score on he really should have shot a 70 at worst I thought and would have only been 6 back.

I think there is a really low round in him if he drives the ball as well again but he is just too far back now unless the wind then picks up again for the later starters.

Didn’t really expect him to win this week but he really needs to at least start getting back into contention of a Sunday at a major.

Don't know how he sticks those very slow rounds out there for someone who naturally plays quick. It must drive him nuts.

Didn’t see any on the play so far but that topic is all over news feeds, again calls for shots to be docked rather than fines. What’s the point in fining mega rich players?

The par 3 17th they were waiting about 15 minutes to tee off. The last 3 or 4 holes seemed to go on forever. It was dreadful.

2 hours for the last 5 holes they reckon... Nightmare stuff.

They gave John Catlin a one shot penalty on Thursday. Token gesture is say. He isn’t even a pga member so they chose him. No chance they do it to the bigger names. Think paddy and mickelson were on the clock though

Quite a typical round there form Rory. Played great after a poor first round, didn't take his chances. That brings on the pressure - no cushion when you have a poor hole. He just can't score. Predictable enough poor finish. If its frustrating to watch it must be incredibly annoying for him.

Goose was cooked in the last three holes yesterday. This is just like every other major Rory plays. One great round (yet to come, looks like being tomorrow at this stage) One AWFUL round (Thursday) Two bang average rounds (yesterday and probably today). As we saw two weeks ago he has the game to win the odd tournament but mentally the majors have the beating of him now.

Rory must go low on back to have any chance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭OEP

He over achieved by winning at Quail Hollow. It's only his second tournament back since he was at an all time low. This is probably a realistic reflection of where his game is now

Yeap he's played some good stuff but still along way off winning a major. He's in much better shape now than a few weeks back at the matchplay.

Commentator saying water off 1st tee shot on 3 of the 4 days here. A massive part of Rory struggle in majors must be mental. And that's going to be very hard to fix.

Rory confirms he will play Irish Open once travel restrictions allow. Great news and a huge boost to the tournament.

Hopefully Rahm plays also and Lowry . Could be good!

“I am really excited to get back and play the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open,” said McIlroy. “I have so many incredible memories of this event down the years, not least my victory in 2016. It is going to be a pretty special week with the fans returning. I’m really excited to play in front of them again.”

Great to see the big Irish names coming back to support the event when it needs it most.

Not sure a US Open style setup is going to suit him too much but he likes the course and if he can get through the first round yips then who knows.

Lovely front 9 from him yesterday but got a bit ragged on the back. Was rushing to finish his round in the end but held it together enough to stay under par. Great putt for birdie on the last in the darkness.

This must be his best position after Rd1 in a long time in a major?

Its actually his worst start to a US Open since 2018. Last year he was in 5th after a 67, in 2019 he was in 8th after a 68.

It's all relative. I guess he is where he would like to be, well in the tournament. He can't afford a slack round though today or any other day if he wants to make it number 5.

Was just thinking this, hasn't his rounds 2-4 been the best cumulative score the past few years? Interesting how/if he drives on from here

Some of the up and downs he managed yesterday were seriously impressive. I think he should contend on the weekend here, fingers crossed.

Also, not golf related but that buttermilk yellow top with the white pants is atrocious.

Real signs of huge progress been made regarding Rory's short irons under the tutelage of Pete Cowan, which has been a huge issue for Rory in the past. The 12th hole, his third hole of round 2 saw Rory hit a 330 yard plus drive to the fairway. 160 yds to the pin and knocks it stiff, 13 inches to the pin with his second shot and a tap in birdie followed. Very good to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,798 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

    Not really.....
    Short clubs still an issue.
Working with Pete Cowan particularly on his driving. Which is madness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,914 ✭✭✭Russman

Unfortunately it’s beginning to look like he’s saving the 75 for Friday rather than Thursday. Needs to at least get a birdie on the 18th.
    So frustrating as a fan.

Is that right? If he's focusing on his driving he's a complete idiot. I just don't believe that could be true.

Wheels are coming off here. Was in a great position after the bonus birdie on 13 but then stupid mistake after stupid mistake.

Bogey with a wedge from fairway
Easy up and down now completed
Short sides himself on par 3.

Lovely 3rd shot into the par 5, good chance of birdie.

He really needs to close this round out no worse than where he is at even par. He’s not playing great but if it ends up as a 72 he’ll be right in the tournament. He could easily make another 3 or 4 bogeys with the way he’s playing so has to keep it together and make a score.

Risking missing the cut now. Once he's in reverse there's no forward gear

Words fail me on how frustrating he is to follow. Pathetic stuff here since the 14th hole. Just dumb mistake after dumb mistake and then can’t hole a putt to just steady the ship.

He is completely frustrated but only has himself to blame for these bogies. Missing in all the wrong spots. He really needs a massive kick up the hole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Battled well over his last 4 holes and unlucky not to birdie all of them.

If lead stays the same he isn’t out of it. You can see that there is plenty of good stuff in his play. But the stupid errors are really frustrating and he never seems to allow himself build some nice momentum in a round.

Did well to limit the damage despite playing poorly, 7 bogies! Still in with a squeak.

It's hard to fathom what a XXXX he is if this is the case. XXXX. And must be surrounded by yes men. How could anyone with his ear not tell him to cop the fck on and focus on what is costing him. How could a coach, in good conscience, not have a straight conversation and tell him something like...if we're going to work together then this is what we will focus on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 58 ✭✭Caddy cart

Mcliroy must b very stupid. All the coaches on here with there advice and he completely ignores it. But the club golfer knows everything as he comes in with his 36 points. As a 18 stone 10 handicapper said at our club last year “ he wouldn’t win a turkey at our place” pure bull****.

How do people here know he's only focusing on his driving? He literally said in the interview after his round he was off to the range to practice his irons with Cowen!

Is the thread title not a bit stale? His last major was 7 years ago.

He isn't just focusing on driver with Cowen, that was just made up for some reason.

Hitting it very well off the tee so far today but just not hitting the wedges close enough then. If he keeps hitting the greens I’m sure one or two putts will eventually drop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Big chance missed on 11 after a great tee shot. Wasn’t the easiest downhill putt though.

Playing really well and 2 under for the day is probably the worst he could be. Not making birdie on 9 was criminal though
