Hi just wondering if anyone had this issue before and got it sorted. 2010 a4 making knocking sounds, inside dash, heater motor flap stuck probably. It's right in middle of dash, so dash removal job probably. Anyone do this before!?

    Cheers

Not on an A4 but on an A6. There are five motors iirc. The ones on the nearside are easy to get to. Remove the glove box and the side trim panel from the centre console/dash. The one on the driver's side is a bit of pig to get to.

Once you have the trim/glovebox off start the car (you can let it get to running temp so you can judge hot/cold air) and then activate the various controls to find out which motor runs which system. There are five, if i remember right, motors in total. Four on one side and the fifth on the other. They're colour coded too which makes life a bit easier for getting spares.

As you have not said exactly what the issue is listen and watch the various motors as you adjust the settings. The one i took out was controlling the air direction as it would not blow hot air to the feet, but would to demist/face vent. Turns out the splines on the motor were worn and would not open the vent flap to allow for foot heating so all i got was cold air to the feet. Took it out with three, iirc, screws and replaced the motor. Problem solved.

Thanks for reply, yea had a guy look at it he said seems like it's the flaps, motor is trying to go back into position and making a noise, 7-8 clicks. Seems to be deep in, nearer drivers side, hard to get to I think.

The one on the drivers side is at the exact same height as the passenger side. This means access is a pig due to pedals, etc. not impossible by any means just no where near as easy as the passenger. You take off the same side panel, left of the clutch pedal, and you should be able to see up to the motor. Do the same setting adjustment to see if it moves and you can pinpoint the clicking.

Chances are its the internal plastic cog or the adjustment bar (about 2.5 to 3" x 1/2") on the outside of the motor slipping. You neve know it might be a simply fix like its come off, but most likely its worn down and needs replacing.

Either way, unless its something i'm not familiar with, i doubt you're looking at a dash removal. Sore knees and ribs, but not dash removal.

Good information, thanks. Gonna try have a look at it this week, see can I pinpoint exact area. Sore knees be fine if the 7-8 clicks disappear!

I changed them out in my 05 cabrio. I found lying in on my back and working upside down the best way.

    Mines a 2005 A4 cabrio. It wasn't a typo, I'm not fancy enough for an A5 :)

😅 Pity these areas weren't more easily accessible! Not looking forward to taking dash apart😧
