Frank Murphys are everywhere in Cork. They grow on trees.

Couple of observations from watching the Sunday Game.

Where a final is concerned a county is entitled to ask for a postponement due to covid.

Liam Sheedy on the way out - Brendan Cummins said it twice.

Suggested that Liam Cahill would replace Sheedy. Did the Tipp County Board not shaft Cahill in favour of Sheedy? If so, why would Cahill even consider the manager role?

Interesting to read so many Tipp supporters expecting Cahill to take up the role when most didn't give a toss about the treatment he received from their County Board at the time. Cahill must have enjoyed shaking hands with Sheedy yesterday, and more luck to him.

Yeah, I've seen you bang this drum more than once. It's a tune that won't catch on.

    It's not an issue.

I think Cahill knows why he didn't get the job. He doesn't have a problem with it.

He's mad for the Tipp job. Every dog on the street knows that. And he has been up front about that from day one, and since he has been in the waterford job too. Nobody could be surprised about that.

Cahill words after the game yesterday. Notice the use of "We"

“It’s going to take a little bit of organising and a little bit of soul searching, as well, to be done at every level; from players to the powers-that-be that have to look at maybe rejuvenating Tipperary hurling because from the sidelines looking in, it’s been quite difficult at minor and U20 this year.

“But we’ve done that before in Tipp. It’s not something that we are unaccustomed to and when they put the right supports around what has to happen, Tipp will be back bigger and stronger than ever and we don’t usually go away in Tipp for too long.

“I’m not saying for a second they’ve gone away, but definitely there’s a lot of tough decisions to be made.”

Given his long association with the blue and gold, first as a player and then as a manager, Saturday brought with it a degree of emotional conflict.

“I take no pleasure whatsoever in being part of this Waterford team that knocked Tipperary out of the championship. That I must convey out there.

“Everything I have been about all my life has revolved around hurling; and club hurling and Tipperary hurling, in particular.

“I love going to Tipperary matches and Tipp club matches, and I’ve had the real honour of being involved at underage with a lot of them guys that played today and are on the bench.

“I know they wouldn’t want pity, because that’s not the type of players they are, but I do feel sorry that Tipp had to exit the championship on the back of a team that I was over. I have no problems in saying that, and I think the Waterford people will understand that as well.

“It was a difficult place to be today but look, the job had to be done and it was done and we move on now.”

The truth often hurts. The fact is that Cahill was shafted. His comments after the match alluded to it when he says hard decisions have to be made at lots of levels in Tipp. Tipp County Board opted for the Sheedy "package" and were rewarded in the short term. But they rejected a long term gem.

Davy had the same type of thinking when he was over Waterford, esp when they beat Clare in the Munster Championship in 2010.

it definitely wasn't easy for Liam Cahill yesterday and very happy to have him in Waterford atm. It's scary to think what he could do with the Tipp team in a few years esp with him knowing the players already from his minor and under 21/20 AI winning teams. Won't be an easy decision for him if Tipp come knocking but it could of been on his mind esp only accepting 2 years (with the option of a 3rd) with Waterford

So speaking for Waterford supporters, Liam Sheedy stay in Tipp please

What kind of money will Tipp have now after Declan Kelly's drunken behaviour? Will he pump his own money into Tipp?

Can't see Cahill walking away from Waterford. There is definately an A.I. in this team very soon and he knows it. Feel if they get over Limerick next week it's theirs to lose. The 4th week in a row may cost them this year but with the range of subs Waterford have now it's not at all impossible. They are playing wonderful hurling, a joy to watch. The talent was always there and Cahill/Bevins have put the jigsaw together. Next year when the fixture schedule will most likely revert to 'normal' it will suit them much better. They will be very hard to stop. Cahill will know that a return to Tipp now will involve a rebuild. There will possibly be 5 or more retirements from that squad we saw yesterday.

End-of-an-era for Tipperary you'd have to think. That team was involved in some epic games, especially the three semi-finals against Galway. Both counties found wanting this year in an increasingly athletic sport.

Galway are going for five in a row at minor level. What happens to young Galway hurlers? The club game down there is as strong as you'll find outside Cork and Kilkenny. 20 senior teams? A county with a university and an institute, and a tradition of hurling within the city itself.

    Nah. Nothing of the sort.

Cahill got detailed feedback. He'd tell you himself, while it stung, he understood. And he learned from it. Cahill's still very young. Will be a way better manager after the waterford experience whenever he goes. Bevans would love the short ten-minute drive to Thurles.

There'll always be money in Tipp hurling. Whether it's Kelly or otherwise. Magnier next, obviously. Ryanair after that.

    I wouldn't call Cahill very young, 43.

18 when he won his all star in 1996.

Cyril Farrell managed Galway in his 20s etc.

    Cyril is a one off.

Cody was 44 when he got the KK job.

Early forties is young for a manager. It's not Liam Sheedy young but it's young.

Davy was 50 today I mean yesterday...now that makes myself feel old.

Hopefully Sheedy sticks with P Maher and C Barrett also.

At least Cork know they are seen as a threat and on the right road back to an All Ireland anyway given the reaction to the covid case. Have won nothing yet and lads here are badly rattled already, thinking there is some big conspiracy

All counts for nought when your CB is as bad as galways. Constant success in underage in both codes and no system to bring it through. No money either due to constant mismanagement and scandals.

Can't see Cahill going to Tipp in the near term. Waterford are close to making a breakthrough. Tipp are back to the drawing board and will need 3 seasons to bring through the number of replacements needed. Are the guys leaving even replaceable in the next 6 or 7yrs. Underage would suggest not but its a bad barometer at the best of times.

Poor rosita took the weekend bad.. no sign of her ..

I think cahill would drop Waterford like a hot snot if tipp job became available..they lacked sharpness but still put up a huge.score and created lots of chances.. to say 3 years away is more wishful thinking than anything

Limerick should have too much for a tired Waterford on their fourth week in a row

Cork kilkenny harder to call cork are improved but I'm hoping when pressure comes on they willbe found wanting..have lovely hurlers but not sure have they men

Then we have issues midfield and only beat teams that were subsequently beaten easily

The Sunday Game had one funny analysis piece of Cork v Dublin.

Under the heading 'Steel' it showed Cork's Downey bursting out of defence first to a ball. Encountering a few Dublin challenges and getting the handpass away to a teammate. This was shown as evidence of Cork's new steel. I mean what the actual fcuk. Any player worth their salt should compete 100% for the ball.

The piece was patronising to Cork.

Downey had a great game at fullback I think. Hopefully he stays there. Cahalane is strong, but can be way too headless for my liking.

Kerry have won 5-in-a-row at Minor level and been very competitive in the other championships they didn't win. Still haven't translated that to U20 or Senior success yet. I'd still rather winning at underage than not at all, will breed confidence in their abilities sooner or later.

I would imagine they will all go through the clubs. Any club tickets not sold, will then go on General sale I'd say, which I would presume won't amount to many.

It's crazy that there were tickets to Cork v Dublin and both Leinster finals right up to throw in.

I don't know how people are not snapping them up straight away

The actual Frank Murphy is still one of the nine members of the Standing Committee on the Playing Rules.

This is basically the Croke Park committee that comes up with the motions that you see at Congress that don't come via the club/county route.

Their term was supposed to be up by now but was extended due to COVID.

The fact that there are only 9 members and that they have responsibility for both football and hurling gives a very strong insight into why the rules for both codes, especially the recent changes, have been so poor.

Clubs in Waterford are only getting something like 150 adult tickets and 12 juvenile tickets. The email for Sunday’s game came through the club this morning but I didn’t hear the breakdown per club. By the number of tickets the clubs are getting I think there’d have to be a general sale.

Well done to the GAA for scheduling the big game to clash with the lions........I’ll be watching Bundee.......

  • Registered Users Posts: 520 ✭✭✭corner back 2

Enjoy watching the Sky Sports Lions. The GAA doesn't need to change its schedule because of a made up rugby team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭OEP

Not many GAA fans will watch the lions instead of the hurling all Ireland semi finals

Also it's the 21st century most people can record one and watch it straight after the other.
