The first half of the 90s was great- very diverse. It did go rapidly downhill from mid '96 onwards with the odd exception and TBH I am not sure if it has really recovered.

Now, I have gone to great lengths and scanned through every year to pick my stand outs. It does not say how many so I have started off by picking 2 from each year and narrowing it down to 1. Not necessarily my favourites but the stand out tunes from that year IMO from my recollection of those years. No re releases or covers.

    1990
Honourable Mention- “Nothing Compares 2 You” Sinead O’Connor (..and straight off the bat I have put in a cover...)
Winner: It has to be- “Put ‘em Under Pressure”- that Enya intro still gives me goosebumps 31 years later

    1991
Honourable Mention: Bryan Adams –“Everything I do…blah blah”
Winner: U2- The Fly- purely for knocking off Bryan Adams.

    1992
Honourable Mention: Snap “Rhythm is a Dancer”
    Winner: Shakespears Sisters “Stay”

    1993
Honourable Mention: Four Non Blondes “What’s Up”
    Winner: 2 Unlimited “No Limit”

    1994
Honourable Mention: ” Whigfield “Saturday Night” – utter drivel but stand out
    Winner: Bill Whelan “Riverdance”

    1995
    Honourable Mention: Coolio “Gangsta’s Paradise”
    Winner: Scatman John “Scatman”

    1996
    Honourable Mention: The Prodigy “Breathe”
    Winner: Spice Girls “Wannabe”-

    1997
Honourable Mention: Hanson “MmmBop” (God I hate that song(
    Winner: Aqua “Barbie Girl”

    1998
Honourable Mention: Celine Dion “My heart will go on”
    Winner: Cher “Believe”

    1999
Honourable Mention: Westlife “Flying without wings”
Winner: Britney Spears “Baby one more time”

It defo becomes harder from 1997 onwards -so much rubbish to shift through. I cannot emphasis enough that the above are not necessarily personal favourites- in fact most are not.

But I’m going to take it back and pick “Put ‘em Under Pressure”- The ROI Football Squad. You cannot beat it.

I don't think I heard this song before. It's much better than the other options and is quite a pleasant easy-listening love song. I like it for the moment anyway!
