Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Nothing really we didn’t know there - maybe questions might have been asked of eir and/or the BBC as to why, after five years of apparent progress on this issue, suddenly things have gone backwards.

These "rights issues" are becoming a real pain in the neck here. Pure greed from broadcasters, rights holders and providers. Squeeze or punish the poor Irish consumer.

Look at Switzerland for comparison - here, the exact same product that Eir TV uses is available as an "over the top" streaming service.

All the main UK (yes, UK!) channels are also available in full HD with 7 day on demand service and an ability to "record" 1,000 or 2,000 shows with no restrictions. This includes all the ITV, BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 range of channels.

No problem with rights issues there.

There is a reason there is no problem about rights issues in Switzerland.

Switzerland is a special case because local law provides cable tv operators a defence against copyright infringement in the case of services that can be picked up free to air on satellite in the country. Because of this, these services - and loads of FTA channels from around the continent - are being offered on cable in the country without the agreement or permission of the broadcasters concerned.

BBC Studios only offer domestic BBC channels to countries that were able to pick the channels up off air via overspill in the analogue era - Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They can do nothing about the situation in Switzerland and have to play ball but it’s not their choice.

anybody know how to put the remote into pairing mode? Eir instructions don’t seem to be accurate.

Why is Sky News not on EirTV?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

No Sky channels are apart from Sky Sports Racing which Sky doesn’t 100% own.

It can be watched pretty easily on the Apple TV box by downloading the free Sky News app from the App Store.

Thanks. It just seems odd given sky news is generally free and ever on saorview which doesn’t have any other sky channels.

bought this on Amazon de to control my Apple TV box as the supplied one was a headwreck and this is far superior and half the price compared to the eir store

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

That’s the same one eir are supplying, isn’t it? Apart from the fact that it has a Magenta/Deutsche Telekom logo instead of an eir one?

it’s exactly the same as the eir one - so user friendly compared to the supplied remote

I personally love the (old) Apple Remote - other than the fact that the front is made of glass and cracks rather easily and it’s so small that it’s too easy to lose. I’m not currently using eir TV though and I’m acutely aware I’m in a minority when it comes to liking it.

The newer one is aluminium and most people seem to prefer it.

Recently got this installed, is anyone noticing momentary pixelation/freezing on a number of channels - RTE, Channel 4 mainly.

It would seem to be on their end as if I watch a programme back through catch-up it pixelates in the exact same places as live.

What the point is of the Eurosport 4K channel on Eir? Even with Eurosport being the "Home of the Olympics", I can't see anything at all in the schedule.

Despite this, over on Virgin Media - Eurosport 4K is available (to all subscribers) and is showing content.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,902 ✭✭✭kooga

agree - you’d think they give it free or have content on it . A lot of the uk cable companies giving Eurosport for free during the Olympics.

I have it the 4K channel via satellite on the German platform HD+ fantastic picture and English audio

And for some reason it's not on Sky either even though it was there a few weeks ago for the Wimbledon finals and before that for Roland Garros.

how do you get the German Eurosport? I’ve a satellite tv with fta channels. Is it possible for me to pick up or do I need a second lnb pointed at another satellite than Astra?

The rights issues are becoming a pain in the rear, and I'm finding so many of the shows I want to watch are now split across multiple streaming apps. The result is I just don't watch as much TV anymore. I find it an effort to find what I want to watch and I just get bored and don't watch it.

I'm actually thinking I might cancel EirTV whenever the contract runs out and just go over to free-to-air satellite. I don't watch enough TV anymore to justify the subscriptions.

It's all just being driven by ever more greedy rights holders.

The Olympics isn't on Eurosport 4K because someone's trying to drive Discovery + subscriptions.

I have had eir for the past two years and it’s fine for me, especially in the room where we have no aerial wire.

However I understand that it’s linked to having eir internet. I’m coming to the end of a two year internet deal and would normally shop around but I’m wanting to stick with eir tv.

Am I correct that I need eir internet for eir tv?

What are people paying for eir internet, particularly those who have renewed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 651 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

Phone eir on 1901 and ask for their loyalty dept. Do your research on competitor offerings, so that you can show them you know the cost of the alternatives. If you state that you are happy to commit to another 12 months, I find eir willing to renew discounts. I have renewed for several years and they always give me TV for €9.99pm, including free Amazon Prime Video, and mobile Sim-only unlimited 5G for €9.99pm. This brings the cost of the total bundle to €50.97, including TV & Mobile. This is very competitive, given that their basic broadband offering for new customers, without TV or mobile is €34.99pm. However, you need to make the call - preferably 30 days before the end of your contract - you can't renew these discounts online. They do have "cost-of-living" increases that kick in every April - but if you time your renewal right, you can minimize their impact - and most of the other providers have them too.

For anyone curious, the Eir TV app works abroad (EU) including casting to a TV. Some channels are blocked (BBC for example), but the RTE, Virgin, C4, Discovery range of channels are fine.

For comparison, Virgin TV Anywhere appears to allow streaming of all channels but casting of only the Virgin channels (same as in Ireland). Now TV works fine also for streaming on a device and casting.

Slightly off topic but the amount of Apple TV boxes with eir remotes in CEX is crazy! They're selling them for €50 and eir do them for €60
