Yes ! Lots! First , you pay hammer, say 100, then fees 10%, then shipping and charges for processing. Then convert to euro. Then pay excise and vat on the value of the package including shipping and excise. I don't have precise figures but 100£ could be anywhere up to 225 euro.

Crude Calculations....(100 +10 +15+10) is 135£ or about 163 euro. Add excise say 20 and then23% vat on the 183 and it comes out at 225 euro.

There has been quite a lot of discussion about this on the forum, and the general experience is that if it is a quantity likely to be for your personal use what tends to happen if the shipment is detected (and quite a high chance of this, post Brexit, at least for stuff coming from the UK) is you get a chance to pay what is owed. Perhaps even several times in a row. But if it was a substantial amount coming in, or you were a repeat offender, we have hypothesised they might take a harsher stance.

All of the above separate to whether it is actually worth while to do or not, that's very subjective.

I assume that if you buy from a European auction site like catawiki or whiskyauction.com and the item is being delivered from the Eu then you don't have to pay duty and excise do you?

YES. You do. Lots of people getting caught. There is no import of booze unless accompanied by your own sweet self. Never has been but with new changes....brexit and changes in vat...being caught more often.

Oh well looks like Ive made a very expensive mistake. I'll soon know. Looks like you don't have to pay vat on second hand items thought which is what these are. I'm gonna get some shock with the the excise though 😭😭

MVR '22 went on sale this afternoon on the midleton web site.

Dunno how many bottles they had, but it was sold out in 12 minutes.

But don't worry, there'll be plenty hitting the shelves of shops in the coming weeks.

As far as I'm aware, the amount released last year was a record but still it sold out in no time. I suspect with extra cost this year it still won't matter. I managed to get one today but I'll be trying to get more via travel etc.

I'm genuinely curious as to why so many people are going to such great lengths so source bottles of this particular whiskey.

May I ask you, and anyone else that might like to answer, why you want a bottle of this so much? There are many other whiskies around.

I have asked this before but no one seems willing or able to answer.

Isn't it obvious? There are only four reasons to buy MVR: 1) to drink - and this is the least likely reason 2) to add to a collection - some people would have consecutive years of a release and they want to keep it going 3) to retain for a period and hope to realise a profit and 4) to present as a gift and one of the three previous reasons will then come into play for the recipient.

I would hazard a guess that reason #3 is the most popular!

Still, I just can't get my head around the whole phenomenon, though. I suppose what I don't understand is, why has collecting Middleton become such a big thing over the last couple of years. It's been around for years and has been collectible for years but since 2020, everyone, their granny and their dog seems to be collecting them. I would just love to know why.

It it that people think that they will be worth lots of money in a few years? Given the amount being held by people, I can't see that happening.

People seem to think they'll retire on the profits. Auctions are full of 19/20/21 selling between 200 and 300. I'm trying to convince 2 of the lads to split a bottle to drink in a session

It’s definitely not going to be the earner casual collectors imagine. To many people buying for the secondary market, they’re going to hurt each other in that regard. Extensive multi year sets might be a different story, however.
