Most of the shows being mentioned are still very popular. Not everything made is geared towards the Boards.ie demographic. Families like dancing shows, fittest family type stuff etc.

Cooking competition shows are such a load of BS…. Cooking shows where it’s instructional and a qualified and experienced chef shows you step by step how to make X dish, grand, usually you can reference the steps and ingredients online but just watching D list celebrities cook…why ? . Some failing TV presenter head who once presented ‘strictly come in your mouth’ vs some ex pro footballer… but they are both very enthusiastic and laugh a lot, especially if it’s Ian Wright, who is on everything now.

The idea that people would actually try to cook the recipies they saw on TV went out with Delia.

They moved on to flogging "books of the series" with the recipes, but people bought them and didn't cook them either (as if you could get half the ingredients anyway)

University Challenge.

It was great for a long time as a kind of self-parody of the "intellectual classes" and people competing to know absurdly arcane knowledge, that goes on at universities and beyond, that I have to believe must have become a least a little bit self-aware at some point surely.

Jeremy Paxman worked because of his accent and his posture and everything about him. The queen's english high faluting talk, a stick so far up his ass. It was hilarious. god help me for saying this but Kevin Myers also produced the proper effect, in possibly the only job that man could ever do right.

Now in keeping with the times they've gone woke. Here's the new presenter, and it just doesn't work anymore as a package, for me anyway. It's not funny anymore.

Right. Knowing things by itself obviously does not make you intelligent or informed. It just means you have a good memory and have spent time on that subject. Mastermind and Eggheads etc., always imply more than just a good memory but a very high intelligence.

Knowing things that are relevant in society and common interest is a sign of intelligence and awareness of the world sure, not just any old thing. You could argue that knowing some things show more a LACK of intelligence and awareness of the world because that's what you have been occupying your time with. The intelligent and informed of society would generally fail a test on some tiktok etc. terminology I'm sure. Much as I love them, Only Fools and Horses/Father Ted specialist Mastermind subjects is really just taking the piss. Those are shows we try to AVOID rewatching surely.

yes, but why? only fools horses has alot of funny moments and both of those shows you've mentioned have become cultural icons in their respective countries. Comedy does't have to be intelligent, it just has to be funny. No Awareness of societies problems is needed. Comedy is meant to be an escape from all that.
