It's worth it! The duck salad was amazing, if you like crispy duck. Hope you enjoy it @sporina

I haven't tried there yet for brunch or lunch, but I must do soon! 😋

Any recommendations for a good bag of chips? I never liked Lennoxes and I don't like Murphy's chip "bar". Both greasy and soggy as balls.

I like a good thick spuddy floury chip.

Denney's is pretty close. But I'm wondering if there's better.

That plate looks like something you'd get from a small town shopping centre cafe in the 90s. It's just missing ice berg lettuce and a slice of ham rolled up. I can see the nostalgia factor though.

    Probably KCs

Or if you're ever in the Marina market, Ico have very nice chips

Golden fry used to be my go to, now, I haven't been in quite a while but think it's still pretty popular

What pubs get good outside sun at around 4pm close to MacCurtain Street?

I know the likes of Charlie's/El Fenix and the big beer gardens like Deep South etc, but I'm looking for somewhere closer to or on MacCurtain street for a pre dinner drink. All of the main pubs are on the southside of the street so won't see the summer sun until 6pm when it comes around. Is it just really Moody's?

Not sure of the names but the 2 pubs next to 5 points ( was white rabbit) and Thompsons on Mc Curtain st itself ?

Use this map to see the sunlight and shade at different hours.

At 4pm it seems anything on the north side of McCurtain street will be baking in the sun.

From 6pm to 7.30pm it looks like the south side is good.

Unfortunately the map doesn't show pub names. Need to figure that out yourself.

ShadeMap - Simulate sun shadows for any time and place on Earth

I was using that map, I take my beer gardens very seriously.

Rising Suns is good for evening pints I discovered. I tried that tonight and it doesn't lose the sun for a long time. South side maccurtain street is great too though when the sun comes around.

    Thanks for your help!

Nosh19 got takeaway from there. Parents in law very happy with it. Big portions

Meanwhile had Izzcafe. Picnic deal, was okay. Nothing extraordinary

New Indian / kebab / pizza spot on north main street called "Starmax"

Unbelievable prices for the curries. I'm suspicious. Must try it soon. Had a full belly when I walked past.

So I went here yesterday eve extra starving. Pretty good. N

Got the lentil Dal curry for €5. Very tasty.

Then I went for a chicken byriani for dessert. Also €5. Also pretty good. I got a drumstick and I think half a breast in the byriani.

    20250602_183710.jpg

Decent portions. Both spicy but wouldn't blow your head off.

They have the curries in baine Marie things and they just heat it up in the microwave for you. Suits me grand for the price and I'm still alive.

    20250602_183102.jpg

I'll definitely be back. Lamb curry looked a bit oily, but at €8 including rice I'll give it a shot.

No idea how they're making money.

microwaved curry doesnt sound too appealing! that spot appears to just be a tax scam, changing its name every 1-2years

How does a microwave affect the taste of a curry, in your experience?

I'm not sure there's a restaurant kitchen in the country that doesn't use microwaves.

Chicken kebab plate from Cork Grill (it's the little place next to No. 21 off licence, with the very off putting pics of really sloppy burgers in the window) on Coburg Street. A really decent plate of food for €9.95, IMO. Free lentil soup, too, with any order. I'll be back.

I went back to that Starmax place today for another €5 lentil curry. Feck, it's cheaper than doing the shopping and cooking your own food.

I saw their kebab tower was made of actual layers of real lamb meat, and not the grey plastic that's usually served around the place. I asked for a small sample for free, pretty good and not very greasy. Might try a kebab there next time.

It's not as if it's a shytty tesco frozen microwave dinner. It's proper curry that they just heat up in the microwave.

Have you ever brought a takeaway home and given it a blast it in the microwave?

As long as the food is chilled properly, I have no problem with it being heated up in a microwave.

That place on Douglas Street (where Pizza Daddy is now) a few years back did very nice curries, heated up similarly.

It might cut down on costs for the business, helping the price reduction on your curry.

I tried the dal and rice yesterday. Decent at any price, to be fair. I heated it up myself at home. I'll definitely be trying there again.

So as can be seen from the pics above it's not just another incarnation of the restaurant serving takeaway. There's a new, clean, modern kitchen and serving area installed downstairs. It looks good.

Regarding the kebab. The chicken kebab is the tasty looking meat pieces on the skewer, alright, but the lamb is the minced meat type. I don't think I've ever seen lamb kebab in Cork that's not the minced type but you can find the chicken versions pretty easily. I wonder why that is? Must try their kebab, too!

Hmm strange. The day I was there it was definitely layers of real lamb fillet or whatever. Saw it with my own eyes and chewed it with me gob. Maybe they do a different style every day. First day I went it was a tower of chicken layers, didn't see lamb.

By the way, Nosta also do a lamb doner kebab built in layers with real meat. You can see it in the kitchen from the dining area. I found it a bit greasy though.

Probably asked before but where does the best chips in Cork?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,829 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

That's far too subjective. There's no such thing as "best chips". There are many different styles of chip and many different tastes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91,604 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

Any recommendations would be welcomed, I like a well cooked crispy chip

I like the chips from the Golden Fry on Ballinlough Road and also from Dinos in Douglas. Denny’s in Ballinlough were also good but I haven’t been there for quite a while now so don’t know if they still are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,880 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

+ 1 for Golden Fry chips. Usually of a good standard. Not such a fan of Dinos myself. The kinsale one seems to be the best of them. Great fish. Chips are usually only ok imo.

I like the chips in KC's but the queues are mental.

Whats the food like in Murphys chipper in Blackpool? I've never had food from there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 409 ✭✭scrotist

I tried Murphy's recently after years of listening to people not shutting up about it. Horrific chips. I think cork people just like disgusting greasy chips, very yellow and oily. Lennoxes was the same.

Dino's is well cooked and crispy most of the time. But go there when it's busy preferably so the chips are nice and fresh. Any time it's quiet the chips are a bit cold or soggy. Have only tried Blackpool and Ballincollg. Ballincollg is more consistent.
