Would love to try Nell's @Drdenise75. Are the plates a decent size? Would one or two (for around €9 each) be enough per person? Probably best for sharing though, yeah.

not cork city but county - had lunch in Hannah's in Fermoy today - OMG - twas unreal - wish I had 10 stomachs lol

I love that place and so reasonable , the shop attached is excellent also, great for takeaway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Drdenise75

Plates were not very big. Having said that, two per person would be enough for most people I think. But for a big appetite might not be enough. So then maybe 5 plates between 2 hungry people. They bring them as they're ready. The bread (a good sourdough focaccia) is a very generous size for a bit of filler!

Heading down to cork this weekend, booked Scoozis Friday night as it was recommended a few times before and the Spitjack Saturday night. Looking forward to both. Going to blackrock castle for lunch on the Saturday and stopping in the elm tree on the way home Sunday.

Cancel Scoozis its muck honestly, anyone that recommended can't be serious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,166 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Well, it is what it is.

    Chicken wings, burgers, pizza etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭barneygumble99

Where would anyone else recommend so instead of scoozi?? Getting a table would be hard at this stage. Friday night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭sporina

Market Lane - fool proof - and something for everyone - same owners as Blackrock castle cafe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Seconded the non-recommendation of Scoozi's. It is standard fare, and in my opinion there are better in Cork.

Seconded the recommendation of Market Lane. It is very good, always packed and has good in-house brewed beer to boot.

Plenty of other places do fantastic pizza wings, burgers etc nothing wrong with those but Scoozis is awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Market Lane never ever disappoints, my favourite spot. Its very reasonable too for the quality of food

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭barneygumble99

Hi guys I actually booked liberty grill. Tried market lane but nothing available until after 9 which is too late for us after a long drive. Thanks for all the help.

Liberty Grill is one of my faves. Staff are great in there too.

I've never been to LG but has to be better than Scoozi.

To be fair, I think Scoozi was recommended for a family dinner, with kids, which it does deliver on. I agree, you get better food elsewhere, but Scoozi is a a place where a child having a tantrum wouldn't be really heard,it's got a loud atmosphere, fast food in a restaurant setting.

Echo this sentiment on the staff. Food was great but the friendliness of the staff elevated the experience

Ah Just saw on Facebook Pilgrims in Rosscarbery closing up

It's with heavy heart we wish to inform everybody that Pilgrims restaurant will be closing its doors on the 2nd April.

After 8 years in beautiful Rosscarbery and a 2nd bundle of joy joining our family in the coming weeks we have decided it's time for a change.

It's a decision we have not made lightly, we've so enjoyed our time here over the years, we love the building and Rosscarbery, getting to know our regulars, the locals, our suppliers and all our staff members over the years. Many of whom are now our friends. We are very sad to let it go. Pilgrims has tried to be a sustainable business from the beginning supporting local not corporates but now it's time to make life sustainable for us rearing a small family.

But never fear after taking a pause, we will be back. We're not leaving hospitality and plans are afoot for the next chapter.

Many thanks and love to all xx

Leaves me with a heavy heat, too - I have a €200 voucher that I never got around to using due, mostly, to, Covid!

Whats your connection with this "upmarket" establishment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭airy fairy

And the upmarket establishment is so upmarket that I recently became aware someone I know, a young waitress, was given a 10 minutes break after 6 hours of work, during a 10 hour shift, below minimum pay.

Anybody been to Cork and Fork yet? Reviews look great but just wondering if anybody has any other opinions before we take a chance on it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭barneygumble99

So Friday night we went to liberty grill, really nice atmosphere there, it was full, but not loud or crowded. I had wings to start followed by the Californian club burger and chips and I have say it was gorgeous. Herself had the fish special which was pan roasted cod and she is still talking about it.

Saturday we went out to the Blackrock observatory and had lunch there, both of us got a BLT sandwich which was massive and really tasty, shared a portion of sweet potato wedges which were quite greasy. Could’ve done without them given the size of the sandwiches. Both had a cappuccino which were quite small tbh. Food was good though.

Went to The Spitjack Saturday night. Seats seem to divided by screens like they were in all places during covid. I didn’t mind it though as the seats are very close so you get that privacy. We had a sharing board of seafood to start which had prawns, calamari, fish cake and sourdough bread. It was a nice sized portion, I love calamari and herself loves fish cakes.

We both had the rotisserie chicken for mains and I can honestly say it was the best chicken I’ve ever eaten, there was plenty of it too. The Lyonnaise potato I thought was a bit bland but the chicken jus and carrots were divine. Overall the food was a solid 8.5/10, we will definitely go back next time. Bill was close to €80 with drinks but really good value for money.

I have one comment....how the fck do you eat that burger from liberty grill..is that really just half an avocado plonked on top? 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭barneygumble99

It’s only half an avocado, I actually gave it a bit of a mash and put it on the bun. There was also a small dish of sauce which you can see at the back of the plate. I’m not sure what it was but tasted good on the burger.

I wonder were we sitting beside each other! I was also in spitjacks, I can recommend the hake with samphire, and the porchetta.

The wine list is a bit light is my minor comment. and for corporate it’s unfortunate they don’t take Amex cards.

I have not been, but are they the same restaurant as Comix on Maylor Street? Is it a rebrand?

Polish place; meat and fish etc. with potato and salads. Looks like nice decent fare.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭sporina

I had the same thought when last in LG - when I saw the burgers.. "how does one eat it?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,680 ✭✭✭notAMember

The heavy advertising and what looks like paid reviews put me off tbh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,693 ✭✭✭SleetAndSnow

Not sure! They look like they have dishes from different countries that they heavily mention on their menu. I do think it used to be comix, looking at the address.

Looking at Cork and Fork's website and it's strange to see somewhere with breakfast that's dearer than the airport.

So, two recent food experiences in Cork. Liberty Grill at the weekend - amazing eggs benedict as always, and then got dessert which I normally don't but had a voucher. Delicious!

Last week, got sandwich from Natural Foods Bakery in Fitzgeralds Park for lunch and it was so good - chicken pesto and just tasted so fresh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Cork and Fork don't do breakfast on their website.

    Nice pics there Leahyl.

Looking for somewhere to eat tomorrow, and thinking about Four Liars in Shandon.

Is the actual menu a bit bigger than what is mentioned on their website?

4 of us had brunch at The Bakestone Carrigtwohill yday - twas fabbb.. esp the service.. the place was full when we got there and there was also a massive queue.. we joined the queue - got to order 30 mins later (worth waiting for).. fair play to the staff.. smooth operation.. not an easy feat with such a demand.. all our dishes arrived at the same time and we wanted for nothing.. dishes were all fab.. we then shared 2 deserts among us.. delish.. good value for money imo.. a great place to have food with friends/family.. we wer there 3 hrs.. won't be long till we're back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,166 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

    Yes.

Don't know why it's like that but if you click "order online", the full menu comes up.

Decided to give the Barn a second chance and our experience this time round was much better.

No feck ups with the orders and the food was brought out on time,Great meal and will be back.

I'm going to Spitjack this evening. Might get either the rotisserie chicken or the porchetta. That seafood starter looks good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭barneygumble99

I’d definitely recommend both, although the seafood platter is for sharing so bring a friend. Chicken was fantastic though I have to say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 405 ✭✭PreCocious

I must have misread the part headed "Breakfast" which describes two breakfast offerings.

    ( €11.20 for a full Irish + tea/coffee in the airport, amazingly)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

You'll hand out €22 for a poor breakfast in the River Lee, used to be good.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,655 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

I'm back from Spitjack, and I would give it a 5/10.

Nothing about it was either great nor bad. Seemed like a fairly standard roast chicken dinner to me. But then again, this isn't my type of food; I tend to go for bolder flavours.

The starter was Pork Belly & Black Pudding in a pastry. Sounded better from the menu than it tasted or looked. I would have gone for the seafood platter had the partner wanted the same.

The main, a rotisserie chicken. It was soft, but didn't have the texture and flavour of a proper free range chicken, at least not to me (sorry to differ @barneygumble99 😉). The ham croquette that it came with had a nice flavour; the potatoes, a little bland.

€28 for the 2 course early bird deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Not sure if free range a thing ATM. Think they are all kept indoors because of bird flu, might explain it. Now organic would be a whole different ball game and price point.

The first ingredient that should be in mashed potato is butter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭barneygumble99

Maybe my standards are a bit lower 😊 I did say alright the potatoes were a bit bland. I will be back to cork for one night soon enough so hopefully try somewhere else, maybe market lane or goldie.

Whats everybody's opinion on Sultan restaurant? Wasn't impressed when i went recently.

I got the chicken shawarma. The chicken tasted and looked exactly like the rubber sliced chicken you get on domino's pizza. Or a packet of chicken slices you buy in Tesco for your sandwich. Plate was lukewarm. Honestly the chicken shawarma meat in Istanbul kebab at 2am is better quality.

I sampled other folks meals and nothing really tasted like it was fresh off the grill. Not sure how they managed that. Seemed pre-cooked and reheated and dry. Very pricey for what you get.

Four Liars is 10 times better quality and similar food. You can really taste the freshness of the food there. Meat is still steaming from the grill and juicy when you get it. I guess they've spoiled me and upped the game for grilled meats in town.
