I believe the only way of not getting money returned via pp is if you select the recipient as a friend not a business. Might be wrong but think that's the case.

That's what I thought and this was definitely a normal payment to business transaction.

Oh well, we'll find out later today I guess.

I took a chance and bought. My guess is a small business, with a cheap website developer, in dire need of cashflow.

That was my first thought, my real concern is the incorrect email which comes from Paypal as the contact for Adamsons everything I can kind of live with or justify but, there email would be right - they would have been taking online orders for a while.

With Paypal buyer protection just doesn't seem the best way to make money?

Agreed. The domain for the incorrectly spelled email address is available to buy so it's likely that they just typed it wrong. Also if they only took card and not PayPal that would be a flag for me rather than vice versa.

Some items showing as out of stock. If it was a scam why would they bother with that rather than trying to hoover up as much as possible. Scam doesn't make any sense

Bag I bought is now out of stock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,791 ✭✭✭thebiglad

2 things I purchased are no longer available - agree, if a scam why make anything out of stock but I am still 50/50 - there is just so much (with hindsight) which is wrong.

If this turns out to be legit, aside from being a great bargain alert, Adamson Luggage really need to step up their IT Team - it is not what you would expect from such a pricey shop which trades on service.

Hard to believe with such a poor website they can have stock tracking - maybe that should be another flag - we can go on forever (or until someone actually gets them to answer the phone and confirm or otherwise).

I personally don't think there's any red flags. Just to categorise the flags that someone else mentioned:

    - Irish based business but shipping from the UK (not a red flag imo)
    - clearance spelt wrong on site (bad website developer)
    - only PayPal as payment option (not a red flag imo)
    - PayPal email spelt wrong (bad website developer)
    - inactive poster for 8 years sharing (not a red flag imo)
    - in site links not working correctly (bad website developer)
    - no out of sale stock (not true anymore)
    - limited brands available. (not a red flag imo)
    - a deal too good to be true (struggling business during pandemic needs cashflow)

    - in site links not working correctly

    - a deal too good to be true...

    Any others?

Where are you seeing that they’re shipping from the UK?

You've some faith in PayPal lads.

I sold a few vouchers years ago and after I sent them PayPal withheld the payment claiming "we suspect the buyer has bought these using stolen money" ( along those lines).

I fought with PayPal for months and they told me to contact the buyer and ask him to return them. Like that was going to happen.

Very disappointed with them and have tried to avoid them as much as possible after that.

This wouldn't be a unique issue though. If hundreds of people buy from this website all within a week and they don't receive what they ordered, PayPal will notice the pattern and refund everyone when they get hundreds of complaints about the same website at the same time. There's not really much risk involved.

Nice one. Happy you got a deal! Fair play for following up too.

rang the shop there and spoke to the owner. A very nice guy who is struggling to keep his head above water due to the covid shutdown. The website is supported by some 3 rd party and he is obviously struggling to get proper IT support. He says the stock tracking on the website is not working but said he would work through the orders and contact people where there were issues. He said he was hoping to ship stuff out on Friday. He got another 27 orders this morning so I wouldn't hold him to Friday !!

With all the calls he will get this morning I would seriously worry for Friday!

When I was on to him myself I asked about another bag I was interested in (now I know it's genuine) and he said sold last one yesterday - still shows as available so there may be some stock issues yet!

Looks like they are in fact closing down as the new banner on their page says.

    Web developer still cant spell

All Deliveries €12.95 during clsoing down sale

Also when you click on Return to Merchant on PayPal it tries to bring you to this page

    https://http//www.adamsonluggage.com//thank-you

Also items are still in the basket when you remove the spurious text in the URL!

Looks like he needs a few more lessons in Web Dev!

Paypal is one of the safest ways to pay and very good to deal with if anything goes wrong.

id say he got it from the website in giant writing saying its closing down.

I wouldnt really trust a site thats closing down to send you the item or care if it gets stuck in customs etc. and obviously there wont be any returns if its closing

I do note they are closing and so probably in hard times but, I dealt with this company in person a few times in pre-covid times in the store and found them to be really helpful (almost old fashioned level) and I would expect them to act decently in this or assist if anything does go wrong.

The website I guess was trying to do work they were not able for and, it clearly didn't go well.

Main concern will be stock tracking and there is likely to be orders for stock overnight where the stock just doesn't exist, we'll see how they deal with that. On facebook it said the sale will go until 4 March 2021 so they will be around for a few weeks yet.

They were an expensive, but very decent shop and sorry for them but not a lot of call for decent suitcases (at retail price) in Ireland currently...

I would agree that you are losing a lot of your consurmer rights buying from a shop that is closing but you can still have rights to claim off the manufacturer.

I am not sure where you are getting the info about customs. My understanding is that this is a local delivery not from the UK. Am I missing something?

Paypal will refund payment if there is a genuine problem.

They returned money for me only this week.

Just spoke with the owner -lovely guy - he is away for the rest of the day but back on Thursday at 9am.
They guys are totally legit & are closing down, they will ship stuff on Friday

They have other items in 1s and 2s, that are not on the site so if you want something specific or colour, then just give them a call on 01 6774622. He has some more cabin bags that will go up on Thursday.

    Hi all
I’ve no skin in the game here but just to reassure punters, this is a genuine chap in a family run business, very knowledgeable and extremely friendly and helpful, I got two pieces of luggage that while I’m not going anywhere for the moment, will be a great investment in the future, I don’t think
hel’ll steer you too far wrong
His stock won’t last long so I’d suggest sooner rather than later

Its a good shop, sorry to hear they are struggling

That site is a real mess on either phone or on a pc, very hard to see whats there and whats left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,791 ✭✭✭thebiglad

Made 2 purchases, just received a PayPal of the 2nd which has a note indicating the 1st one also refunded (guess I will wait and see when it comes through from Paypal).

Presuming stock issues but will give them a call tomorrow and try to find out.

Ordered last night and, apart from calling shop to ensure it was legit this is the only 'communication' I have had.

I guess this will go down as one of those Bargain Alerts that are good for those who secure anything but not much stock - I will see how others get on...

Came on to say the same, I placed an order yesterday afternoon, received a confirmation and got a message from DPD that the shipment is on the way.

I have spoken to him a couple of times, i think we are ok on this one - still some stock left but best to call and talk through what you want now - they are extremely helpful.
