In addition whoever wins the special election in February will then just be turning right around and running for re-election the following November. Just crazy all round.

Will they run one for McCarthy as well or will his seat just stay vacant until November?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,845 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Well, it turns out it depends on exactly when he resigns. If he resigns before 3 Jan 2024, the Governor is required to call a special election in 2 weeks.

After that, it's optional and the seat can stay open till the next election cycle.

Assuming McCarthy in fact resigns before the end of the year (last business day I'd expect), there'll be a special election. There are already candidates queuing up, McCarthy's district is right wing so likely a Republican will win. You never know.

    Some candidates:

    Most amusing name: Devin Nunes.

As mentioned below it depends on when exactly he resigns but it does seem likely yes.

"President Biden’s support for Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of Gaza is losing him respect all over the world."

    The man is a weakling.

There have been no posts on this thread in over 8 days, in the midst of mass genocide being aided and betted by the US, yet the thread about the former President is as busy as ever with the same posters.

    It reveals alot.

Possibly because the former guy can't more thana few hours without saying, or doing, something stupid, revolting or both.

Meanwhile 'ol Sleepy Joe and his team quietly go about getting stuff done. Because unlike the previous administration they are staffed with professional administrators, not people picked because they feed the president's ego.

When it boils down to a choice between TFG and Biden I am firmly in the Biden camp. However, I am very disappointed with how he has handled the Israel / Gaza situation. Biden bypassing congress so that the US could supply weapons to Israel to continue this slaughter of so many innocent people including children is not his finest hour.

I think that most people are. However, Biden is following standard US practice here and his hands are effectively tied. No President is going to risk pissing off Jews in America and abroad and it's really that simple. A million Palestinians could be slaughtered and US political circles wouldn't raise their heads above the parapet too much. Israel is far too important to US interests in the Middle East to risk alienating them to any degree. That's the realpolitik of the situation. Plus, one shouldn't underestimate the power that certain lobby groups have within the US too.

In any case, regardless of what Biden does with respect to Israel, I won't entertain any nonsense about Trump doing anything better.

    That's for damn sure.

@Tony EH "No President is going to risk pissing off Jews in America and abroad and it's really that simple."

Normally I would agree, but this has gone far further than I think Biden should tolerate. The Israelis are just bombing innocent people to oblivion. Obviously I am appalled by the behaviour of Hamas and condemn it in the strongest possible terms, but what the Israelis are doing is genocide. Time for Biden to put his foot down IMHO.

"In any case, regardless of what Biden does with respect to Israel, I won't entertain any nonsense about Trump doing anything better."

Agree 100%. That unpredictable lunatic is capable of doing anything.

I'll take your word for it. You being a MAGA fan would make you an expert in hypocrisy.

Netanyahu states there will be no ceasefire until Hamas is "eliminated". How he will determine that Hamas is eliminated, I would guess that the only way to be sure is to kill all Palestinians. Everytime he wipes out innocent civilians, children and babies he creates more Hamas recruits.

Yet Biden continues to support Israel as his administration looks like its going to veto a UN resolution to halt fighting for a 3rd time! Last time around the resolution was supported by 153 countries, but I'm sure Biden knows best!

I mean who knows what he actually thinks, the fact is he needs Jewish support to win the next election, that's how politicians work, what they think and feel is irrelevant, they will do whatever is required to survive.

Financial management and security, both baseless claims.

I'd like to see some figures that back up those claims of the economy, just to see if you know what you're talking about

Like his massive tax cut for the rich and big corporations that increased the US national debt significantly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,948 ✭✭✭eire4

I would go a step further and say utterly risible claims.

You mean the war that's been a complete wreck for Russia? That war?

The rapist isn't getting in at this point. If he does, he'll probably declare war on Ukraine as well in between trips to his golf courses.

Joe Biden exchanged emails with his son Hunter’s business associate 54 times while he was serving as vice president

    Another good week for Joe

As President Joe Biden grows increasingly mystified by his unpopularity, he is also experiencing the worst polling of his presidency. This plummet was punctuated by last Thursday’s release of several Bloomberg/Morning Consult surveys showing him getting swept in a series of battleground states. Then, on Tuesday, yet another New York Times/Siena College survey showed former President Donald Trump beating Biden nationally and, perhaps most shockingly, with young voters. Now that the contact high of the most recent Democratic election overperformance in November’s off-year contests has worn off, genuine fear has set in among both Democratic insiders and the rank and file as the president trails Trump by 3 points in the RealClearPolitics average.

Precisely how scared Democrats should be about Biden’s standing depends on how his plight compares with those of presidents past. And there’s no sugarcoating it: This might be the worst polling environment for an incumbent president one year out from an election since the advent of the polling era in the 1930s and also the most dire situation facing any Democratic presidential candidate in decades. Panic is entirely warranted.

Republican Senator candidly admits the GOP will hold up immigration reform during a "Migrant Crisis TM" because it would be favorable for Biden politically

“Makes it harder because there are people that, you know, that that take their lead from, you know, directly from him,” Cramer began, discussing the impact of Trump’s likely opposition.

“I do think, you know, he’s in a campaign. He’s the presumptive nominee as far as I’m concerned. His opponent will be the current president. And so he’s probably. I haven’t talked to him, but he’s probably thinking about Joe Biden victories. If Joe Biden suddenly got religion and supported a border deal that actually reduced the flow of illegal immigration, that would be good for him politically,” Cramer continued, noting Trump would likely put his electoral priorities ahead of any action on solving the border crisis.

No one has seen the details and they are already trying to do this. You have Fox News who is kind of spreading this a little bit of misinformation about it. Hugh Hewitt, Heritage Action, the conservative political arm of the Heritage Foundation is lobbying members to come out against this.

This is going to be extremely difficult politically. And the reason absolutely is Republican members tell me, is because of the politics they do not want to get, give President Biden a win on one of his biggest political, you know, vulnerabilities that he has heading into or in an election year.

SCOTUS sides with Biden and the CBP, allows reprieve for CBP to remove razorwire that was blocking the feds from getting access to the Rio Grande, several people drowned when the CBP could not gain access to intervene

The court case itself is still to be decided.

Who else is following the last minute campaign that has sprung up to try and write in Biden's name for the New Hampshire primary? His campaign team were dismissing the primary as a joke in recent days and not something worthy of their precious time, but are now desperate for him to win it at all costs. Interesting stuff, I think they're worried there might be a few upsets along the primary campaign that could undermine his election in November.

The Democratic party says that as New Hampshire does not adhere to their party rules there will be no delegates awarded so it matters not a jot what happens in New Hampshire on the Democratic side.

Sure, but the point is nothing is being done as regards what's happening in Gaza.
