Certainly - But scamming a few hundred million out of the rubes for this nonsense might mean he gets to keep Mar A Lago or whatever as it would reduce the number of properties that would have to be seized to recoup the ~$500M he owes.

    So he still benefits..

As a businessman, Donald Trump ran 6 businesses that declared bankruptcy because they couldn’t pay their bills. As the president running for a second term, Trump is repeating some of the mistakes he made as a businessman and risking the downfall of yet another venture: his own political operation.

In the 1980s, Trump was a swashbuckling real-estate investor who bet big on the rise of Atlantic City after New Jersey legalized gambling there. He acquired three casinos that by 1991 couldn’t pay their debts. The Taj Mahal declared bankruptcy in 1991, the Trump Plaza and the Trump Castle in 1992. Lenders restructured the debt rather than liquidate and Trump put his casino holdings into a new company that went bankrupt in 2004. The company that emerged from that restructuring declared bankruptcy in 2009. Trump’s 6th bankruptcy was the Plaza Hotel, which he bought in 1988. It went bankrupt by 1992.

Historically , he'd have declared bankruptcy in a heart beat and run off with the remaining cash leaving his creditors high and dry , but now he has a political calculus to determine.

His whole Schtick is that he is a mega billionaire and the greatest businessman/negotiator the world has ever seen.

If he declares bankruptcy (again) that gets destroyed in the eyes of voters.

He NEEDS to win politically or he's going to jail so he has to work out (in his mind) which is less damaging politically - Going bankrupt and protecting his money/properties or fighting this in the courts and losing but maybe gaining political support that helps him win in November.

For now at least it seems that he's chosen the latter path , but as it all comes to a head in the coming weeks he might change his mind again.

I'm out of the Trump loop, I have to say. The latest seems to be that he fell asleep in his own trial.

I've no idea how someone could fall asleep in their own trial, regardless of guilt or lack thereof.

Is he buying shares or what do they do? Buying those shares is like buying soap bubbles, it's just burning cash.

I'm a complete dunce when it comes to shares, if people buy the shares the money goes to the company, so does it matter if the share price tanks?

You got their money and they have a worthless piece of paper, isn't that a good deal, especially if a common is as grossly overvalued as Truth Social?

The way he's behaving in the trial is definitely not gonna help him in the court of public opinion. I can't wait to see how it hits in terms of his polling. Say he's fuming.

Most of the time, the money from a share purchase is going to whoever is selling those shares, often not the company itself. Plenty of swapping between hands in the hope that whoever is selling will make a little profit on the sale if the shares value goes up. It's essentially gambling with little chucks of company ownership.

No expert myself, but I think that the company that's putting itself on the market does get money from the initial sale of available shares, or at least whoever it is that owns those inital shares. Donnie isn't allowed to sell his shares yet, but once he can, all of that money goes to him (or the SDNY depending on what happens).

But since the share value is tanking, you're getting the initial investors wanting to sell their stocks before their investment is a total loss for them. So they sell at a loss, which drops the value of the shares and scares others into selling at a loss, which drops the value of the shares…and so on…in this insane emotion-driven bulls*it production that the world's economy is apparently built upon.

All correct - You also have the scenario where no one (or very few people) is buying the stock and the price keep dropping as the share price is the current "asking price" as it were.

If no one is biting , the asking price keeps dropping so if/when they get the approval to release all the available shares to the market the share price will plummet as supply will far outstrip demand.

The drop yesterday was the result of any actual sensible shareholder bailing out now before that total collapse happens.

Never mind his kids gradutation, he didn't even attend the inauguration of his successor.

Part of me thinks the reason he doesn't attend graduations is because he thinks he is worthy of the bigger prize on the day.

It's the MAGA's - They see it as an article of faith to give him all their money so he can take them to the promised land..

I read an article the other day and it was quoting various reddit threads where the MAGA's were talking about wanting to "support their President" and having been "sent by God" to buy the stock as they discussed draining their Roth IRA (Pension) accounts to buy this junk..

The only other people buying the stock are short sellers , but they are few and far between because there are very limited numbers of people that are willing to buy the other side of that trade.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭Rawr

Can still take time. Plenty of shenigans to pull off before the shares are worthless. You've also got the wierd phenomenon of MAGA cultists buying shares as tribute to their God-King. That not enough to actually rescue the $DJT shares from oblivion, or increase their value, but it might slightly delay the total collapse of them.

According to David Simon, that's a popular Baltimore PD trick. Leave the perp in a room by himself for a while and see if he sleeps. If so, he's guilty.

It popped up briefly this morning when they announced plans to launch their own Streaming Service where all those content creators who were "cancelled" everywhere else could present their stuff along with a "news" channel which I assume would be something akin to NewsMax, but with a brain injury.

Obviously people weren't excited enough to keep buying the stock based on this promise.

At current run rate it will be below $20 before the week-end - That still leaves Trump with a $2B windfall if he can get out quick enough , but more likely it will continue to slump before he can get past the various procedural barriers allowing him to sell his shares.

Yeah, but he's only asking that Trump be forced to remove the multiple offending online posts and that the judge "admonish" him to ensure he complies with the order. He's not asking for him to be found in contempt and sanctioned.

Yet again , Trump getting special treatment - anyone else would be in "pre-trial detainment" already.

The people who should watch it will just shriek about how "woke" it is. Imagine, a show with a mainly black cast, set in a majority BAME city exploring themes like corruption, racism, policing, education, inequality, and journalism getting made now and not getting pilloried by the usual types.

The 2b he would get is subject to someone/s willingness to buy the shares, the current fluctuations is based on a very small percentage of sellers and they alone have tanked the prices. If TFG put even a few percent of his holding up for sale I suspect it would drop the price to single digits. There is no way he can sell it all or even a reasonably percent of it without having a few large scale buyers in the wings. What the rules on that are I don't know though.

Point being, share price is no reflection of what he would get on the day

Surely Nasdaq should have stepped in by now and cancelled the whole farce, cannot be doing their "fit and proper" reputation any good and if a stroke is to be pulled has to be when Donnie allowed to sell.
