The fact that the infection and hospitalisation rates haven't fallen far enough to let non-essential businesses re-open proves that the movement of pupils and teachers to and from schools doesn't make a significant amount of difference in the pandemic.

The problem isn't individual teachers, it's the system hasn't supported them at all. There should have been much more put in place for remote learning supports and IT supports and so on.

The impression I'm getting is that the department quite literally thought a mop and a bit of a 'deep clean' (wipe of desks) would be adequate.

Yup and they were even reluctant to put money initially into cleaning and mopping and apart from phased reopening have done nothing else

The other poster is obviosly unstable... one of the many side effects of covid we have seen in the past year, people that previously appeared normal ending up like this.

    ECDC opinion on schools.
It is possible to keep schools open, even in situations where there are high levels of infection, according to the European Centre of Disease Control.

I have no idea, as I said they weren't in my group. Maybe they thought masks weren't sufficient maybe they didnt want no extra curricular, maybe they preferred home school, who knows. I don't jump to conclusions about the desires of other people, and I certainly dont pass comments on them, like disgraceful or such and such. I won't hold it against you if you want to pull back and we can keep discussing.

Would you like it if a group of parents were for instance dictating what your kids were allowed to eat for their lunch in school?

First of all, where are you getting the word "dictate". Second, well we already have a healthy eating programme in the school, so no fizzy drinks, must have at least one piece of fruit and others. I think those in need also get that for free but I'm a bit hazy on that.

But I'll engage with you here - if there is a common consensus on what is appropriate for lunch, no i wouldn't have an issue with it. So if a parent noticed that I only sent my DD in with a redbull and a dibdab and therefore we had a discussion around healthy lunches, no i wouldn't feel threatened, as I want what's best for my child.

I have 2, to answer your previous question, one in 2nd,other in secondary school. Anything else I can help you with?

The idea of a pinky promise contract though...."Young Tarquin doesn't have Covid today, honest!"

dont know what the big deal is the whole country will be opened up in about a weeks time when all the schools go back...

School closures are unconstitutional apparently and they want them reopened. ARTICLE 42 for those who are interested.
A number of leading children's charities have said the blanket closure of schools is in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Someone more knowledgable than me might clear this up but I think Crowley vs Ireland would show that by providing online learning the State are fulfilling their duties.

My point is that the re-opening of schools will not mean the re-opening of the whole country.

Think if I remember from reading about this previously that the phrase "provide for" or something similar gets the state out of jail. They don't have to provide education, they have to have the circumstances that provide for education.

Yep, Dev inserted the word “for” after a few lads in one of the Departments had a canary when they saw the phrase “provide education”

This is a "Good" and "Bad" system, I hope they clear some stuff up, but the twist that really grinds my gears is this

"Government hopes the proposal will act as an incentive to get students to sit the written exam."

That's just evil. Makes me feel kinda guilty if I go PG now. If I choose it, no going back.

Have the EDDC considered that students and teachers are sitting with classrooms with windows left open to aid ventilation. Hopefully the weather improves soon. Temperatures havent reached +10degC yet.

The LC has effectively been cancelled again.

Time now to move to continuous assessment. The fact that the system of college placements has worked out ok surely shows the current LC structure is devoid of purpose.

This is why teachers are getting their knickers in a knot about this. They know now a precedent has been set.

Continuous assessment and more teacher involvement is the future (this means more work for teachers).

The ECDC consider a lot of things and really don't give out information casually. I've no opinion on this but NPHET takes their lead from them. And it was 12C today!
