I’ve never had a pair of golf shoes need breaking in. Come to think of it, I’ve probably only had a few pairs of dress/fancy shoes need breaking in over the last 20 years or so. I find most shoes nowadays tend to be quite forgiving around the heel and don’t really require the old fashioned breaking in so much.

Same, I've had to break in many a dress/work shoe. Never a golf shoe thankfully.

I wear loads of different footjoy shoes, I’ve 3 different premiere ones and although really like the fit, comfort etc the top of heels are horrendous for digging in. One pair were fine after a few wears, but fit slightly big, the most comfortable fixing pair still dog into heels after about 20 wears, can’t walk 18 in them without getting blisters if not wearing compeeds. So don’t ever wear them really.

Running twin layer socks etc don’t work with them.

Yeah, haven't bought a pair of foot joys in years.

I'll be wearing a pair of Adidas if I'm going for a runner style shoe

I'll be wearing a pair of G/Fore if I'm going for a traditional style shoe.

Have never had problems at all with either brand in recent years

I had to return my Adidas Code Chaos after 6 months of wear as the upper started to separate from the sole, but I think it was just a bad pair rather than a brand quality issue.

I have a pair of Footjoy Hyperflex that are spiked, they are super comfortable. No heel issues or anything like that.

Going to pick up a pair of Adidas Solarmotion's to have a pair of spikeless for the summer months.

Mad. I Never had to break in any golf shoes before!

You're lucky. I must have soft heels or something, almost every new dress/work/golf shoe rubs them raw in a matter of minutes. I'd a photo of my right heel, but I don't want to ruin anyone's lunch.

I genuinely am not being smart. I used to have a similar problem with regular shoes (rather than golf) but it turns out I was simply buying shoes too small for me! So much so that where I used to buy as an adult 9.5 in some shoes now I get an 10.5 or 11 and I’m sure my feet haven’t grown! It’s just what I was used to, a feeling that shoes should be tight. Based on the feedback above re footjoy and people not having the same issue it occurs to me you might want to experiment with a bigger size. Could even do the old fashioned getting your feet measured, you might be surprised! Best of luck.

Would agree..whilst obviously there are dress shoes that need to be broken in.

Must be too small or why would you bother with a shoe that needs breaking in at this point of golf style

Life too short for blisters in golf these days...

Do any of you buy different shoes for summer golf?

I mentioned the Adidas Solarmotion's in my previous post, I happened to be in McGuirks today and had a look at them and the upper seems to be quite thick faux-leather, so I'm not sure how comfortable they'd be wearing in summer.

But then, if you go for the really breathable shoes they tend not to be waterproof, and in Ireland you can still be playing in wet conditions in mid-summer.

Do you prioritise waterproof over all else?

I've a pair of the Nike Air golf shoes for summer, ridiculously comfortable, and I'd wear them on most occasions if the weather in anyways allows.

I've a pair of spiked FJs for the softer weather. I picked up a pair of the Premium classics in a black Friday sale 2 years ago. Very comfortable and dry, most importantly and are still holding up well. Although I don't really golf a huge amount in the winter TBF.

Yip, have a pair of Ecco waterproof ones for winter but zero winter golf this year. They will do for a few more years at that rate.

Have several pairs of Adidas Retrocross shoes for the summer. Regularly on sale direct for approx €40. They've got that faux leather as well. Handy as it offers a little bit of protection from the rain / wet grass in summer, but if your feet are prone to overheating, then maybe a more breathable pair would be best. I find that really lite breathable material doesn't offer any real protection and gets scruffy fairly quickly.

The main problem I have with the Retrocross' is remembering to take them off after a round. I find them very comfortable and wide fitting, which suits me.

I've a pair of Adidas Code Chaos and the heels started to wear through and give me blisters after about 10 rounds. Tried heel grips inside the shoe but that made it worse, so just stuck some duct tape over the area and used plasters. Comfortable and breathable otherwise, but wouldn't get them again.

You and awec must have bad luck or be harder wearing than me on your shoes. I've had 2 pairs of code chaos, and from day one have never had any issue with them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭shakedown

I think it's quite a common issue, you must have nice soft feet 😄 https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/1921611-longevity-of-code-chaos-22/

I think much of it comes down to how well they fit. I found some brands slightly too big in my size and they slide up and down mashing my heel.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,881 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

Its not really shoe fit for me, some people like myself just have an angle of heel that catches some shoes with a convex tip in the heel counter on them like premieres. Footjoy fit large too, so if anything if not sizing down they’ll be too big.

I’ve never had an issue with any other footjoy, currently have 4 pairs of hyperflex, traditions, flex on the go. Adidas 360 used to give me blisters too.

I personally really need spikes winter/spring/autumn but in height of summer on hard ground I feel them in the soles of my feet so I usually wear a spikeless pair of some type. Planning to try the new Footjoy quantum this year for that. Although the hyperflex spikes aren’t too noticeable even in middle of summer.

Out for first 18 hole comp of the year this morning, lovely day for it.

I had the exact same problem with the codechaos except with me the heels started to go after two rounds! I also used the same fix with the duct tape but they still cause discomfort. I got them for a good price so for what I paid, they're ok. If I paid the rrp I wouldn't have been happy at all.

Are places running qualifying comps yet? After the dry weather we've had the last couple of weeks .

Talk of elmgreen going qualifying from next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭paulos53

I believe that Tulfarris have qualifying. I am planning to ring them over the weekend to see if that is the case for their St Patrick's day open singles.

Nenagh are often one of the earliest parklands in Munster to switch to qualifying each year. Haven't heard any update on them yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,265 ✭✭✭benny79

Id be surprised at that! Tulfarris can be very soft. Most parklands will be middle of April. Your only kidding yourself otherwise. Links is your best bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,062 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Maybe a chance of somewhere like Blessington Lakes or Athy. They tend to be pretty dry parkland courses I think.

Always found Tulfarris at risk of being soft alright, given the location and water on the course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,206 ✭✭✭Bahanaman

Borris has a qualifying singles tomorrow and this weekend also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭paulos53

Glasson is another one. I got an email from them today advertising an qualifying open singles stableford on Monday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 478 ✭✭GolfPar

Athy have an open every Tuesday which is counting and since the beginning or March are back to 18 holes at the weekend, most of which are opens.

Placing on fairways and 'Replace' in the rough rule currently in place.

Nice one. Was looking for somewhere to play Monday!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭paulos53

I just rang Nenagh. They have started handicap qualifying competitions so that is my Monday golf sorted out.

that’s how most parklands get open early, the ‘replace’ rule that most people ignore.
