    Hi All,

I've my NCT due in the next few days however I've misplaced my log book and can't find it anywhere.

Should I reschedule and request a log book to be sent out or should I go for my test and chance it?

    Thanks :)

I have never been asked for it. Btw is it no longer a book, unless your car is very old.

Go ahead with the test AND apply for a replacement logbook.

I did this and they held the cert until I could produce logbook which I did about a week later.

Only ever showed my driving license at the test centre, and was never asked for anything else.

Just put through two cars recently

I have never once been asked for a registration book at an NCT centre so I would say just go with the appointment and they probably won't ask for it.

However if you know that your centre consistently asks for it, then cancel and rebook when you get new book.

They will only ask for your drivers license.
I did the test a couple of weeks ago and this was the case, same as when I did it two years before.
The mrs has lost her logbook and was doing the test last week, she was worried,no need to be.

They will do the test either way, if it passes and there's some issue they need to see the VLC you can present that at a later date and they will then give you the NCT cert.

They ask for the cert and licence in my local centre (Enniscorthy), no cert until you produce both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,645 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I was asked once for it so it depends who you meet at the other side of the counter on the day. The good thing is that they will still test the car without it but if they ask for it they will withhold the pass cert until you return with it. Go ahead, get it tested and chance you don't get asked for it as appointments are like gold dust these days, but you will still need to organize getting a replacement logbook issued as you will need it if or when you sell the car.

I've been asked for it every time and I do a fair few tests every year. I must just look dodgy 😂

What is the reason for failure on the test report if u don’t have the log book??

In Dublin, I’ve been asked for the VLC and photo ID at every NCT test over the last few years.

No failure. You just collect it when you can produce the VLC.
It’s the same reason when you forget ID. You can continue with the test and collect at a later stage on production of ID.

NCT in Fonthill last month. Only asked for Drivers Licence. Was in the same situation as yourself.

Yeah but what does it say on the test report as regards log book??

Yeah but what does it say on the test report as regards log book??

It's not in the test per se but is a requirement to bring it to the test centre.
Actually they are being kind in carrying out the test without the document.

It doesn't say anything. They just wont give you the new cert (assuming you pass) until you produce the VLC.

But surely they give you a test report (white A4 sheet) and that will either say pass or fail or advisory at the top??

Don't look for it at my centre either...

Log book is now an easy lost piece of paper (keep it in a plastic sleeve or something to make it obvious). Never been asked for it at NCT - maybe there is something on the computer that makes some people look like likely suspects to need a logbook? Though they don't seem to do all that much checking on the computer anyway, maybe it just shows when the results go in.

They won't give you a Cert if they looked for the VLC and you don't produce it.
If the car fails they will obviously give you the fail sheet. Nobody said they wouldn't.
As for giving you a 'pass' report but not a Cert...... What difference would it make?

Anybody know what the point of them needing the logbook?

If they give you a fail sheet it will say what it failed on. Im just wondering what the wording is on the fail sheet.

Vehicle cert is needed to show the car is properly registered, I would guess.
I can't remember being asked for it though.

The fail cert will show what the car failed for:confused:

To get the VIN number and make sure they are testing the right car.

Otherwise everyone could just swap their license plates with a similar model that is guaranteed to pass the test, get the cert and put it in their car that wouldn't have passed and swapped back the plates.

But in the day and age of computers I'm sure they can that information from the centralised database.

I've never been asked to produce mine during half a dozen or so tests at Northpoint.

    That explanation makes sense.
I never thought of doing that for NCT .lol.

I've always been asked for it in Letterkenny NCT centre

It cannot have failed just because a VLC wasn't shown.
Therefore if it passed and the NCT are not handing over the Cert without seeing the VLC there won't be a 'fail code'.

Some people would assume that they can just add a note to the Test in question referencing the issue, maybe that's how they work.
If it worries you that much you could either email them or call in and ask them to satisfy your curiosity
