It really highlights the lunacy of not having the Tailteann Cup in play.

I mean realistically what do Wicklow and Wexford have to play for now? Beating the handicap?

Unless Dublin join the European Super League, its another nail in the coffin of the Leinster championship. I'm sure apologists will be in soon now claiming it isn't Dublin's fault.

It'll probably be in Croker too seeing as its a QF.

It’ll give he more time to sell your strawberries. Silver lining and all that.

Its plastic. To heat that to a temperature where it would stay hot through all the talking would melt it.

And anyway to what end ?

In fairness your post is the bitter one, mine was tongue in cheek.

The GAA would be sweating in the Hurling if Antrim beat Dublin in the Leinster QF as Dublin would go into the AI preliminary round with the loser relegated to the Joe McDonagh Cup for 2022

Sadly can't see it happening as Antrim and Laois are still that level below the other 9 Liam McCarthy cup teams but crazier things have happened

Speaking of the JMcD, have they a date for the lower level hurling draws?

    Semi Finals

    Armagh/Antrim v Monaghan/Fermanagh

    Tyrone/Cavan v Down/Donegal/Derry

That Ulster draw means that two of the top six ranked teams in the country will be gone by week 3:

    1 Dublin
    2 Mayo
    3 Kerry
    4 Donegal
    5 Tyrone
    6 Cavan

Coupled with the fact that you've 4 Ulster teams playing each other in Division 1, and then 3 in one of the Division 3 divisions, it would have added a nice bit of novelty to just have an open draw.

I don't think you're going to get many folk to agree with your assessment of Cavan as a top 6 side given they are in Division 3 and the semi-final performance, Ulster title or not. Brave try :)

The geographical split doesn't look the best but 3 of those 4 teams were in Division 1 and there were 3 Ulster teams in Division 2 last year and so for me it's not that big a factor in terms of the championship.

An open draw is never going to happen in football when you have the provincial councils. Too many lads afraid if you do get rid of the provincials championships, that people will start asking why there is a need for 4 different provincial councils at all.

Speaking of the JMcD, have they a date for the lower level hurling draws?

    Looks like they were today:

    https://www.gaa.ie/hurling/news/draws-announced-for-mcdonagh-ring-rackard-and-meagher-cups/

Dates for matches are at the bottom of the article
The draws for the Joe McDonagh, Christy Ring, Nickey Rackard, and Lory Meagher Cups were made today.

The draws in full along with the dates of each round and a guide to the format of each competition can be viewed and downloaded at the bottom of this article.

    2021 Joe McDonagh Cup

The Joe McDonagh Cup will be played on a round-robin basis with two groups of three based on an open draw.

Each team has one home and one away game with the top team in each group playing in the final and the winner promoted to the Leinster Hurling Championship for 2022.

The bottom team in each group shall play off and the loser shall be relegated to the Christy Ring Cup in 2022.

Beaten 2021 Joe McDonagh Cup finalists, Kerry, have been drawn in Group B with Meath and 2021 Christy Ring Cup finalists, Down.

While 2021 Christy Ring Cup champions, Kildare, are in Group A along with Carlow and Westmeath.

    2021 Christy Ring Cup

The Christy Ring Cup is also made up of two groups, one with three teams (Wicklow, Roscommon, and Derry) and one with two teams (Offaly and Sligo).

Group A will be played in Round Robin format and each team will have one home and one away game with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals and the third placed team playing in the quarter-final.

Offaly and Sligo will play one match in Group B with the winner playing in the semi-finals and the loser playing in the quarter-final.

The winner of the Christy Ring cup will be promoted to the Joe McDonagh Cup for 2022 while the loser of the quarter-final will be relegated to the Nickey Rackard Cup for 2022.

    2021 Nickey Rackard Cup

The Nickey Rackard Cup will comprise of two groups, one with three teams (Donegal, Mayo, Leitrim) and one with two teams (Armagh, Tyrone) based on an open draw.

It will follow the exact same format as the Christy Ring Cup.

The winner of the Nickey Rackard Cup will be promoted to the Christy Ring Cup for 2022.

    2021 Lory Meagher Cup

The Lory Meagher Cup will comprise of two groups, one with three teams (Longford, Louth, Monaghan) and one with two teams (Fermanagh, Cavan) based on an open draw.

It will follow the exact same format as the Christy Ring and Nickey Rackard Cups.

The winner of the Lory Meagher Cup will be promoted to the Nickey Rackard Cup for 2022.

That Christy Ring format is ridiculous looking. I know lots of things were against them (no Uk teams, lots of teams promoted but none relegated, uneven numbers, teams wanting several games and 2nd chances etc.) but would it have been too difficult to have the 5 teams play a round robin with 2 into the final?

In group A, 2 teams reach the SFs and the 3rd team that "only" gets into a QF will be overwhelming favourites to beat Sligo and advance to a SF anyway. There's effectively no reward for winning any group games or any disadvantage for losing them.

Seems to be similar across all the lower grades. It's an inconsequential group stage followed by a knockout stage.

    It's the hurling way.

What's a hurling championship without multiple opportunities to be eliminated?

Offaly should piss through the Christy Ring this year

Would you prefer it the football was where Wicklow get to take a 20 point pasting and it's season over

I'm going off the official rankings on this site based on performance over last number of years. Cavan are ranked sixth on it:

    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057173179&page=68

Cavan were in Division 1 in 2017 and 2019 so, whilst their league performance last year was poor, Division 3 is not befitting their status. They could have been promoted or relegated from Division 2 on the last day. They were also without a number of players through the League last year.

They also made the Ulster Final the last two years in a row which is no mean feat. The only county we haven't beaten in Ulster in the last two years in either League or Championship has been Tyrone who we will play this year.

I would prefer if the league was a league and the championship was knock out.

Back doors are a sham. You can't honesty defend the shape of hurling competitions over the years?

Most people would probably have them in the 3rd tier of teams - first is Dublin on their own - 2nd would be the teams who have consistently given Dublin a game on occasion over the last few years and are likely to over the next few years - Cavan would fall into the third category, which I'd refer to as a team who can be very decent/tricky on their day but lack consistency. A solid Division 2 team.

In terms of the ranking table you linked - it's one way to rank teams but I don't think anyone is going to argue it's flawless - the fact that Cavan lost no points/didn't drop in the rankings after the 15 point loss to Dublin in the semi-final says a fair bit about it's limitations.

Paddypower have them 13th at 200/1 in the betting to win Sam, which is probably a touch harsh, but has more to do with the draw in Ulster and the county population(and numbers gambling).

I will be cheering them on in the game against Tyrone and would be cheering them all the way to winning an Ulster title but I think the odds are against it this year.

I would prefer if the league was a league and the championship was knock out.

Back doors are a sham. You can't honesty defend the shape of hurling competitions over the years?

Back doors are needed because the league is so low profile. I would love an equal level league and championship in both codes but that ain't happening.
I think the current round robin hurling is about as good as it will get given the pieces we have to play with

The leagues are low profile because the fair weather fans don't show up for the league so the GAA need to maximize the championship sadly

Not fully clear yet but seems like there will be lots of games streamed there based on the article below.

The article does say "counties in the lower divisions of the hurling league will be permitted to organise their own streaming."

    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic-games/gaa-to-broadcast-unprecedented-number-of-matches-this-season-1.4538682

I would have thought that they would have confirmed what games were being televised and streamed for the league when they confirmed the league fixtures.
