I just cancelled my order for the 30th Anniversary console (for reasons I won't go into).

At least I have the controller coming, so it ain't all bad.

The PS3 was a complete wildcard. They moved away from architecture which the devs were familiar with and went all out with Toshiba on the CPU I think it was. They felt it was so powerful that it was going to be revolutionary. It was powerful but it turned out to be a nightmare to develop for as essentially prior to this devs could easily port a game in development to both console and PC. With the PS3 they essentially hard to learn a whole new system that was exclusive to the PS3 and so you had separate teams working on the PS3 and PC builds of a game. It's part of the reason why the PS3 was slow out of the gate at launch and the XBox 360 stole a headstart.
They learned their lesson with the PS4 and so that was much more inline with what the developers were used to but it did mean that the hardware for that was wholly incompatible with PS3 games.

I’ve been using my PS5 for 4K Blu-rays, I recently got a LG C3 which is Dolby Vision compatible. Would it be worth it to get a dedicated Blu-ray player to get them in DV? Is there a big difference between HDR

There's a bit of a difference. Before you go and buy a dedicated 4K player use the built in Disney Plus or Netflix app and watch a Dolby Vision item to see if you think it's warranted.

Tbh both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X aren't great as 4K players, both support Dolby Vision for streaming in 4:4:4 chroma but both can only output 4K discs in 4:2:2.

There's not much difference quality wise to be fair although i prefer Dolby Vision but noise levels are completely different. I've a Panasonic UB820 and its near silent…my ps5 pro on the other hand is like a jet engine with a disk spinning - as was my launch PS5 model. The Sony X700 is a good alternative to the Panasonic and its a bit cheaper and it will most likely be on sale next week for black friday week.

My vote is if you are watching 4k blurays regularly you should get a dedicated player

I bought 1 x uhd disc for my PS5 but never watch it and dont think I'll get into uhd disks. Yours for a fiver plus postage if you want it:

Could be good on C3 oled...

Edit: open to anyone who wants it. Its annoying me having 1 uhd disk lying about. Dont want to bin it either.

Yes worth it I was very disappointed PS5 and Series X didn't support Dolby Vision so went out and bought a dedicated player now there are not a lot of options out there I first purchased a Sony X800M2 player they are around €300 on Amazon problem I had with that you had to manually turn off and on Dolby Vision via the menus plus it froze during the layer change. I now own a Panasonic UB820 which is fantastic auto switches on playing Dolby Vision and doesn't freeze on any of my 4K discs. It's around 350 on Amazon although I recommend maybe buying from Richer sounds and paying the bit extra for the 6 year extended warranty. Btw I have an older LG C series OLED 65" so if your into movies I would be buying a dedicated player

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes coming out on PlayStation on December 3rd. Looking forward to it as it looks pretty good on other platforms.

Is there much differences in the PS5 based on release dates? Was looking at second hand one on adverts, model number is "Model CFI-10160" which according to google suggests around end of 2020? (I assume it is actually Model CFI-1016). Any thoughts?

    Going by this site:

It's the EU 2020 Model. The only differences would be component sizes, they're functionally the same. The fan is a lottery so you'll either get a quiet one or not.

I see the ps5 console, disc version, is 395 in Supervalu on Friday, is that the cheapest it's ever been?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,065 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

It is. Afaik the previous lowest was €430 last Black Friday to clear out the old stock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 904 ✭✭✭JIdontknow

Where did you see that? Sounds like a great price, must look it up!

Beautiful little piece of kit. They should never have made the face buttons so bland and stark on the Dualsense. The coloured face buttons (and even the PS logo) are so distinctive and iconic, and really make it pop.

Looks like mine won't be delivered today as the tracking still has it at DPD HQ and I haven't received a text message with a delivery window.

    It's an absolute beaut. 😍

The presentation of everything is fantastic in the box. All the lining with the controller face buttons. Love the little things like the USB cable with an old school ps1 connector.

The 30th Anniversary Dualsense and Edge are things of beauty too.

For the OG disk version I think that's a decent price and about 80 less than the rumoured slim disk version discounted price. I think this is the rumoured Playstation black friday deals.

PlayStation’s Black Friday deals in Europe will reportedly include:

    • PS5 Slim Console – Standard Edition: €474.99 instead of €549.99.
    • PS5 Slim Console – Digital Edition: €374.99 instead of €449.99.
    • PlayStation VR2 headset: €399.99 instead of €599.99.
    • PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Pack: (contains the PS VR2 headset + Horizon Call of the Mountain game activation code): €399.99 instead of €649.99.

Sony has confirmed that DualSense controllers will be discounted by up to 25%,. Deals will also be available on Pulse Elite wireless headsets, Pulse Explore wireless earbuds, PS5 console covers, and select PS5, PS4, and PC titles.

My new Dualsense arrived a few minutes ago.

Now I will try to avoid buying controllers for the remainder of this year and next.

Agree about the buttons, but much like the normal Edge (and as much as I love the Edge over the DualSense), the glossy faceplate is a missed opportunity. Should just have gone with the normal matte finish, which looks much more appealing, especially with the 30th version.

There are replacement options out there of varying quality, but never found one which is just right unfortunately. Some out there have even gone down the matte paint route. Hopefully someone produces like for like replica.

I never knew you were getting the pro bundle. I am envious innit.

My main issue with my current DS Edge and which I foresee happening with this one too, is the rubber palm grips at the bottom/inner. After a while it starts to bubble and detach and doesn't seem to be a decent way of fixing it.

Hopefully they've recognised how it happened with the normal Edge and have taken measures to fix for newer models, but I also won't be at all surprised if it happens again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,065 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

Yeah, I have that issue with my launch Edge too. It doesn't help that the stock of the stick modules is pretty much controlled by scalpers. There is very little supply in retail and there are literally thousands up on eBay.

Would you expect that SuperValu PS5 deal to be on display in the store? Or ask at the counter job?

What games are people hoping to pick up in Black Friday? I'd like to get Astro Bot, I'll probably grab RoboCop secondhand as it's €30-35.

Have my eye on Dead Rising, but I have the PS4 version so I don't really need it, although I would like a physical copy of it!
