What one thing would you bring if you were a castaway?

I've watched the Tom Hanks film "Castaway" and he had to deal with surviving whilst having no tools or implements to facilitate this.

His flashlight ran out of battery power and he couldn't signal a ship on the horizon. So obviously any electronic devices are out of the question. He had a pair of ice skates and they helped him to knock out his infected tooth and maybe crack open a coconut. It was also raining a lot and he didn't have much shelter and had to improvise.

So let's just assume there is a drinkable water source on the island. After that you have to completely fend for yourself what is the one thing you would bring along to help the situation?

It seems that lighting a fire was a priority to keep warm, keep insects away and cook whatever you could catch. He broke his arse trying to make fire using the stick method. So I personally think I would bring along one of those plastic magnifying glasses to focus the sun on some dry leaves/moss and get a fire going.

So what would you bring along? A knife? A machete? A porno mag?

And when the batteries run out? Or it gets soaked in the water as you're being washed ashore?

Are you going to use it as a paper weight for when you're writing your memoirs in the cave?

    Coincidence? I think not! :P

A fish , maybe a mackerel, I'd keep it in the water beside the island. It might breathe with other mackerel, then I'd be king of the mackerel.

Well firstly I'd jump back to 1986 take Amanda Donohue from Oliver Reeds castaway island, so she could then join me on my castaway island :)

I'd also bring a flashlight torch.

For some ridiculous reason, every now and then I actually think of this and the answer is always the same. A lifetime supply of Ventolin inhalers.

I'm not even a heavy user, I just know I would be headwrecked without one.

I've even wondered if I would need to bury them or hide them up in a tree in the event of a tsunami.

    WTF is wrong with me.

#18 .... Forgot to say Solar powered.

I hope I have runners on me when the ship goes down ( highly unlikely) - those sand flies in beaches can be horrendous when they bite.

I’m tempted to say a huge acre size mosquito net so I can wrap my entire beach hut in it and sleep in peace without them screaming in my ear & tormenting me at night.

A industrial strength solar powered air conditioning unit and a crate of firelighters wouldn’t go astray either :0

having said that, a refrigerated crate of wine aNd cheese would make the mosquitos and heat/cold much more bearable!

A knife would be very handy but you could create sharp objects from stones or branches

Duct tape is very very handy for creating things as opposed to fashioning twine.

Actually an axe is more useful overall. It can be used as a knife, but has many more uses.

Twine is pretty easy to make. Knapping stones is a skill that requires some knowledge and experience. You have to know the right type of rock for a start and that may not be present on an desert island. Coral based islands for example would lack them. Though seashells could be utilised in a pinch. These days you'd likely find human flotsam and jetsam washed up that could be used too.

generally a knife is recommended in survival situations, it has the abilities to be used as an axe, but isnt as capable as an axe, i have split wood with a knife, and of course its astonishingly versatile compared to an axe

One of those knifeyaxey type survival tools would probably be the best compromise?
