Neighbour sold a 750kg bullock in the Mart two weeks ago & got €3100 for him. It looked a very good price as he was only 20 months old. But a lad I know bought him and killed him 2 days later, He came into just over €3,240.. he had 15 in total out of the Mart that he killed on the Thursday and had similar money on each of them.

He has started doing this every week, for the last 6 months or so, he puts together 15-20 cattle over a week ( he goes to about 4 marts around over the week) and then sees which one of the 4 factories around will give him the best price once he has a load ready.... He said he usual picks up €100 plus after expenses on each of them.. its usually made up of 75% fr, then a few AA, Hex & Sims. Maybe the odd BB but he said they can catch you out lacking far cover when killed.

Yeah fat cover is the lastest gimmick. I had a load of winter finished cattle that I used to stand in between them when feeding in their troughs and I felt fat but most came back as 2s. They were no way 2s I had an o micfully fight with the agent. I pulled cover off their ribs. Some shower. Their balls were dropped also. Now I'm along time killing cattle not long winter finishing but still. I go for cover over grades.

That game your friend is playing is a pure gamble. I know of two 'wise' men who lost four farms between them. It takes alot to click, repect around the ring which actually never happens.

Myself and the young ladcwere watching Gortalea last night. Finished continentals are 100-250 behind factory price. They have collapsed over a week. Same in Sixmilebride today.

No way would I carry a friesian anywhere but to the factory. Sh!tload of cattle not making factory money at present

All marts are back because factory price is back most deals are gone mart prices at all times reflect what deals are available for that week and gortatlea is no different, their is no one going out of that mart with cattle at 200 under kill value, your example from listowel was probably the lowest priced fr heifer anywhere in the last 6 months and if a farmer decides to sell way under factory value I don't have any pity for him

I always find when I am at home watching a mart cattle look good value but when I am at a mart their is always a good reason why some animals make less than others and if you work out factory value their is usually a small margin or no profit on plenty of fat cattle

Any quotes for next week? I have a load of AA/Hex to kill. Got two quotes. €7.40 base and €7.30 base on Friday. No flat price available. While last load sold flat all killed O= and O+ would be nervous to sell on the grid.

Out of curiosity when did you sell your last load and what flat price did they give?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭lstmd

I got €8.20 flat the second week of April for AA.

€7.40 + Bord bia €0.20 + AA bonus €0.20 on the grid for an O will end up €7.60.

Larry trying to lower the prices in the mart for filling the sheds for winter 25/26😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,302 ✭✭✭limo_100

possible. I know it’s only words on paper until it happens and there probably using Agriland to scare lads into selling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭lstmd

They might be trying to scare lads but when AA or HEX are fat you can't hold them too long.

I say there is an element of that. I think they are not getting the flow of cattle they would like. They killed a lot of forwards stores from in the marts in March. You can only kill an animal once. Sell hard look for an extra 5-10c see of they come back. Finish your cattle fully. Do not be sending in FS2+/3- cattle if at all possible. Very few finished cattle in the marts. Rations are 35c/ kg, beef is still above 7/ kg.

    I disagree on the flow

I deal with 2 processors mainly and they both keep putting me off last few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,207 ✭✭✭StevenToast

I spoke with Larry today...talking about killing 3 days next week now....

Why are they putting you off? Are they working less days or getting plenty of cattle?

They will target certain areas around the edge. One local factory is "full this week" mainly they are shipping in feedlot cattle and slaughtering from certain regular suppliers/ tied suppliers example agents or dealers that buy in the marts.

They will empty the feedlots, hope they can back up cattle 5-7 days and get lads to book in. On Friday in Gortalea and in Sixmilebride on Saturday mart prices were back.off factory prices. In Kilmallock today which is normally poor for finished cattle the finished heifers were being bought by an online buyer which is unusal

I know an agent and he said a certain factory was stuck for cattle and they purchased 450kgs freisian in a mart and brought straight to the factory

should people hold off on going to the marts then with finished stock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,537 ✭✭✭epfff

Would be friendly with the lads in lairage in both and they not doing numbers. Both on 4 Days but only doing 3 days numbers(just over half what they can do in autumn).

They seem to just not want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,872 ✭✭✭morphy87

So how will they fill there orders if they ain’t getting the numbers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 20,773 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Move your cattle if they are fit but do throw cattle at them because you think they will be 10c less next week. My own preference is to send to the factory as I think there is limited times they pay more in the marts. If you take cattle to the mart weight before so you know there value.

They want them all right. It's a case of who blinks first. However part of the problem is the expectations of some some farmers. A few weeks ago we had lads talking about 10/kg. However we have to remember the retailers have not increased tge price of beef to any great extent yet. When they do that will suppress demand

They have regained control, unfortunately. June bank Holiday weekend is always a barometer.

But marts telling a different story.

we could do with a bit of BBQ weather over the next couple of weeks

Brought 5 heavy fat cows (750kgs +) to the mart this week...just as an experiment...i was prepared to bring them home....i was quoted 6.70 for O's from Larry and told they are going to 3 day weeks now....that was for this week but he told me it could be even less next week...

I was pleasantly surprised by the prices I got in the Mart and I am fairly confident that I did better than going to the factory...averaged 3.50 per kg...

The online bidding for them really drove up the price and was great to see....

I will be going back to Mart to sell another similar batch in the next couple of weeks...

If Northern buyers are buying they can give mighty prices for good cows.

If they were tight young cows they may kill up to 50% ,most factories was given 7 euro for cows up to lately so if they were stuck they might have gone there also

You might get €7 for a strong R Cow...of which I might have 1 or 2 but Larrys grading machine would definitely put them in the O bracket...
