If they get over Doon this weekend they’d meet Loughmore/Castleiney in the semis in Thurles I believe. Wasn’t it only a few years ago Loughmore ran them close (in Walsh Park I think and rotten conditions) and only for a debated red card for one of the McGraths could have gone either way? From what I recall BG got over the line by a few points but were run close.

If they meet you’d still fancy BG all day but Loughmore will be mad to get them back.

Similar happened against Borrisoleigh but they lost, Ballygunner can take nothing for granted

Yep your right but the weather can be a huge leveller this time of year. Thomastown will be dangerous but you'd have to feel they are in bonus territory at this stage.

Offaly champs Kilcormac (I think) will be an interesting one to watch, pretty sure they have Adam Screeney in the forward line and are no stranger to Leinster finals.

totally agree on the weather being a standard leveller this time of year. Sunday at minute looks like it will be a calm dry day like the past week has been (according to met Eireann web site) so the ground should be in reasonable condition….given its Doon’s first outing at Munster club it’s a tall order for them to come out with a victory but I’m sure Derek McGrath will have a strategy in place…..😀Adam English and O’donnovan will be a handful……but Ballygunner’s experience at this level and their overall quality should see them through…..does anyone know if TG 4 are showing it live..?

Are we surprised that no one here has congratulated McGrath on his achievement helping doon get over the line. Not to be underestimated.
If it was Queally with Kilmallock there’d be lads creaming themselves

You would imagine it will be difficult for Doon to get themselves at the required level mentally and emotionally with such a short turn around and especially as it was their first title win.

No doubt Derek will have them well setup, whatever anyone's feelings are on his style of play he's generally quite meticulous in how he plans for opposition and sets his team up but where do ya start with Ballygunner, very few weaknesses across the field.

It's a fantastic achievement to be fair to him and I wouldn't begrudge him any accolades that come his way. I wonder will he fancy another crack at inter county level in the future.

what are his tactics come sunday, 15 men behind the ball , dedcated sweeper job ?

feel ballygunner are good enough to shoot from midfield and just ignore the blanket defence

Dungarvan Minor football division 1 champions tonight with a win over Gaultier 3-13 to 2-13 in Fraher field, big boost and hope for the future for the club after a disappointing year for the former kingpins of Waterford football. Well done all involved

In fairness Derek is a very good manager, very tactically astute, I wouldn't write Doon off on Sunday and he knows the Ballygunner players and manager well.

Good luck to Derek, but let's be clear here, I wouldn't want to see him back with the Waterford Co team, he had his shot.

Best of luck to Kilrossanty against Limericks Feenagh Kilmeedy today in the Munster Junior Championship

A few posts going around about how the main pub in Doon ran out of beer on Wednesday such were the celebrations…. I wouldn’t say Ballygunner are buying that for a second

Good to see that result, hopefully they can push on now

Brickys playing the Kerry senior champions tomorrow

Well done Kilrossanty, no doubt Paudie Fitzgerald was at the forefront for them. Lovely score from him in the clip in the link below.

    Derek has his homework done

You see a different Ballygunner in the 2nd half. Doon county players showed up in that 1st half

    As you predicted

The kick in arse Ballygunner needed and Loughmore-Castleiney won't be afraid in a few weeks time

Yes, their shots on goal weren't good enough to beat O'Keeffe. Such a good goalie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭JD. 60

Too close for comfort for Ballygunner. Doon could have scored 2 or 3 goals.

Anyway, objective achieved. Some 2nd half by Dessie, Patrick Fitzgerald & Pauric Mahony. Conor Sheahan immense throughout and deserved MOTM.

That's it. They did "take" their goal chances it's just the keeper was class. Some people seem to think every shot on goal not scored is a mistake by the striker or that having a good keeper is some form of cheating. "ONLY won because of the keeper" but you never hear "only won because of the forward".

DMG showed again over the last few weeks he's still the best manager / coach in Waterford and probably in the top 10 in Ireland too. Had his homework done yesterday. Doon were setup well and ultra physical. That will stand to Ballygunner going forward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,040 ✭✭✭Deise Vu

This is very true. The Limerick championship is like ladies badminto normally . The Doon players had to be coached how to be physical. Every time they floored a BG player you could seem them cringe with embarrassment as they helped the player up while apologizing profusely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 588 ✭✭✭Krazy gang

Think that's the kick in the backside ballygunner needed. Don't see them being stopped now. Loughmore, feakle / sarsfields and probably cushendall which will be a stiff test to get to the all Ireland final. Strange how few players they're bringing through though. Patrick Fitzgerald only new player in last 3 /4 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,668 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

True about that and this could be the last hurrah for that group of certain players and management

I'm not Ballygunner so stand corrected if wrong, but aren't Tadgh foley, Ronan Power, Kevin Mahoney Patrick Fitzgerald and Paddy Leavy all in the 22/23 bracket which suggests that they [1/3 of the team] were all new players in the last 3-4 years?
