Between the Wexford and Waterford lads heading that way Australia could throw in a decent team for the 2023 championship.

dont Know what’s true but wouldn’t underestimate just how much these guys have put into it over the past few years

must be zero sense of satisfaction for all your efforts when your dumped out of the championship by mid-May

Wonder if any of the Limerick fellas will head abroad. I doubt it. They'd wake up in the morning to JPs ex SAS man in the kitchen and the coffee in the pot. Then gently being told to make sure the gear is ready for training .

Will Davy be ringing lads begging them to commit ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,908 ✭✭✭914

Question out of interest before Davy assembles his backroom team.

Has anyone from the 2013 minor or 2016 under 21 All Ireland winning management team ever been involved with the senior set up?

Whether that be trainers, selectors etc?

I'll take the lack of replies as a no, which is what I thought but was wondering if I missed anyone.

We must be the only county in Ireland with such few all Ireland's that those involved in minor and u21 success never got the call up to get involved with the senior set up.

    Strange.

Isn't it strange? Liam Cahill's reputation was built on what he did with underage teams and we overlook it in our own county to go with a similar fella from Tipp. Mind boggling really.

I was always surprised that Sean Power never got a chance, but even if he didn't the fact no one from the minor or u21 All Ireland winning management team has have been involved in senior. It is odd, especially the fact we are not steeped with All Ireland's at any grade.

Maybe Davy has a chance to ask someone from the minor or u21 to get involved, a familiar face with the players could be good.

That said it's so long ago now the time has probably passed.

He tried to put himself forward in 2018 after Derek left but he wasn’t even considered for an interview. They went for his club mate Pauric Fanning instead.

    Worked out well didnt it….

I think sean power put his name forward for senior manager at one stage but he didn't get a single vote, his own club didn't even back him. Paul Flynn, eoin Kelly and Kieran o Gorman were his back room with the u21s in 2016 I think, none of them have been involved n Waterford teams at senior level since. it's a strange one alright

Wasn’t it always held against him that he wasn’t involved with any club sides? I seem to remember around the time of the minor campaign a lot of people were critical of the management & felt it was won despite them rather than the management being a big part of it. Hard to believe that was the case though.

What was the full minor management team? Sean was manager, Kieran O’Gorman was selector I think, was Wayne Power the coach? Has Sean been involved with any teams since 2016? Wayne Power would be fairly active on the club scene, training Clashmore in recent years. Not sure if Cuggs is still coaching, he definitely did a stint at one point, possibly with Colligan.

Think Sean has been involved with Dunhill the past few years as a coach. Not sure about anything outside of that. He did go for the Waterford job when Fanning got it, surely then was the time to try Sean as opposed to Fanning

Nice read from a few years back

I still can’t believe Sean Power didn’t get the senior job in 2019. There aren’t too many counties (Tipperary aside) who’d overlook a manager that achieved what he did with the underage teams, especially as success at those grades is once in a lifetime stuff for Waterford. The county board took a gamble on Paraic Fanning, would Sean Power been any bigger of a risk? Not at all would he have been.

I always wonder why weren’t the players as vocal then as they were previously and have been since? Surely they’d have wanted him to have a go at it, especially with the likes of Flynner involved too. We all know what happened with Fanning in the championship and that wasn’t right at all.

Were some of the players not too keen on Flynn as he'd expressed a few negative views of the teams playing style under Derek?

It could be more a case that Flynn wouldn’t take any nonsense off any of them.

Two competitive senior games last night. Passage will regret their game plan as they simply don't have the players suited to short passing. When they went direct they caused a lot of problems for Fourmile with Liam Flynn in particular winning a lot of high ball. Fourmile ground it out though with the county players to the fore. Sean Walsh also showed his potential. His hurling would probably need to be improved to make a big impact at inter county but others have done it in the past.

Clonea are a dogged sticky team to play against but again they didn't finish the game with 15 players and again it cost them. Very hard to understand why Lismore are playing Iarla Daly at centre forward as he looks totally uncomfortable there and had very little influence on the game.

Fourmilewater really put it up to Ballygunner last year and wont fear them, Mount Sion could be too strong for Lismore but never know and the other games are hard to call
