The Blackwater Community School team which played St Colman's of Fermoy in the Harty Cup last week had, I think, just two players from Lismore on it. They were also well beaten. Could there be any connection between the two? We will have a situation in the coming weeks where Lismore will have more players on the county senior panel than on the Blackwater Community School team (and, of course, two of these didn't play for Blackwater anyway). This hardly bodes well for the future of Lismore hurling.

Iarlath certainly played for Blackwater but then moved schools. I think Carthach might have played one year also before they moved.

Blackwater certainly don’t seem to be up to Harty standard at present which is worrying. Surprised they aren’t in the B competition.

Corks schools & indeed Rebel Og are doing huge work in developing players the last number of years & this can be seen in the difference between Waterford & Cork schools performances as well as the differing results at underage level. We are well short on GDO’s & indeed the quality of some of the GDO’s we presently have would leave a bit to be desired.

Blackwater have always been competitive at Harty level, I don’t remember them getting as well beaten but I beleive this is quite an exceptional Colman’s team aswell and one of the favourites to go all the way.

Waterford Dosent have the numbers to be strong in colleges level. DLS are strong because they get the lions share of all the talent in Waterford city, Dungarvan area is basically split between 2 schools (CBS and Friary) both of those combined would be a strong Harty team every year. Blackwater while covers a strong hurling area, the numbers are quite small in those clubs in the far west of the county so ate not going to be competitive every year.

Also factor in you have so many Waterford kids that go to schools in commuter areas outside the county. Youghal, Fermoy, Clonmel, Carrick and Abbey college in Ferrybank which plays in Leinster,

DLS college won the other day now through to the QFs. Patrick Fitzgerald scoring 0-16 out of the 0-20

Aren't lismore going out on their own underage???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,751 ✭✭✭thesultan

You don't really, the Lismore school has a massive pick of nearly 1000 students (we'll say half boys) . They got to a harty final in 95 with under 200.

League fixtures should be out in the next 2/3 weeks

Championship fixtures seem to be out with dates tbc with Round 1 taking place Easter weekend next April

    Tipp (H)

We took them for 7pts in July, anything less than 10pts next time will be inexcusable! 😁

On a serious note, we do really need to target the home games against Tipp and Cork for wins to have any chance of getting out of the group. A big ask to get anything out of Limerick up in the Gaelic Grounds, could come down to getting something up in Ennis on the last match day.

One game at a time and as we all know too well how much of a struggle the Munster round robin has been for us. Possibly depending on what stage the redevelopment of Walsh Park the 'home' games could be played at neutral venues. Hopefully some clarity will be given on that soon

Dublin away is our first league game next year going by a few articles about next years league fixtures

Waterford Gaa again in the national headlines & again for the wrong reasons.

Is this county able to go any longer then a few weeks without a scandal.

Horrendously petty, the people responsible for the complaint should be ashamed of themselves.

It’s shocking bad. As low as it gets. I hope the person who reported it is happy. And I certainly hope it isn’t a “GAA person”

Can someone explain to me how the GAA, can hire out croke Park to the IRFU & FAI but won't allow a hall be hired to kids ? Has the rule been reinstated? Pure petty and not a good look for GAA at all. Most of the kids of that age play 2 to 3 sports, FFS best Bgunner player is an ex footballer! I'm hoping it's some outside busybody and not someone internal in BG, know a good few coaches and the time and effort they put in with the kids is phenomenon also meet some at soccer training, have no interest in soccer but I don't like to see apartheid being practiced.

I’m not sure how this reflects poorly on Waterford GAA? It’s not like the county board put a stop to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,061 ✭✭✭deisedude

Reflects badly on GAA HQ that they stopped a soccer team using GAA facilities because of some smallminded busybody see you next Tuesday.

Are Ed Sheeran, Garth Brooks and Westlife playing a game of hurling when they play Pairc Ui Caoimh and Croke Park? Last time I checked country and pop music isn't gaelic games

congrats to Mount Sion on winning the Junior A football final

Senior Football Final between Nire vs Rathgormack on tomorrow at 2pm

Oh I’m not condoning the decision, or the rule, for a second! But the original post mentioned Waterford GAA being in the headlines for the wrong reason…

Personally I wouldn’t feel Ballygunner or Bohs were doing anything wrong. It happens across the country with indoor facilities, Astro’s, possibly pitches too & generally without issue.

Sorry, I didn't want to imply you were

I'm just raging at the GAA

The school in Lismore is drawing from a vast area, Modeligo, Aglish, Villierstown, Cappoquin, Melleray, Ballyduff, Ballysaggart, Tallow, Knockanore as well as the town of Lismore and the area outside it. It is also drawing in players from North-East Cork and in the past the like of the Barron's from Fourmilewater have gone to school there, so it is no real surprise to see so few players from Lismore involved. Maybe the problem might also be that standards might be slipping at underage levels despite what we might like to think.

Do De La Salle still get to pick from players from South Kilkenny that make their way across the bridge for their education. Would players also come across on the ferry for South Wexford to attend De La Salle college.

Ballygunner match is on TG4 ; the schedule says ‘live’ but coverage starts at 3.10 so guess it’s deferred coverage (they also see live coverage of a Connacht football semi final, with both games down to start around the same time).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

They've changed tac, Tipp replay now shown live on tg4 at 3.15, I'd imagine the Ballygunner game will be available to buy on a stream.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,015 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

Of the clubs listed above would I be right in saying that only Ballyduff & Fourmilewater field on their own at underage? Fourmilewater’s link to the school is near non existent I’d say at this stage with the majority going to Clonmel or Dungarvan / Friary I would think.

Every other club feeding the school is reliant on at least one other club in order to field / compete.

Anyone see the league fixtures ?

I know Dublin is our first game but not sure of the venue. A Croke Park double header would be nice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Think provisional fixtures were sent to county boards last week but nothing finalised yet.

Dungarvan been beaten by killrosanty in u 20 C hurling last weekend by over 30 PTS ,is not a good sign ,for a senior club

Indeed! Kilrossanty have been putting in a big effort in fairness to them, but that is still a bad reflection on Dungarvan. They were in a minor final this year so seem to be making a little progress at underage level again, although that may have been Division 3 also.
