Group Buy idea

have a look at this thread

a few years ago people from here got together and did a bulk buy from a roaster in the US I think, the idea is that you'd approach the supplier and see if they will offer a discount for a bulk purchase, then divide the coffee up once it arrives

the person looking after the order is also responsible for the distribution, and it's all factored into the cost of the buy in.

    Any interest?

Think we'd need about ten to twenty people to commit to buying 500g maybe for a 5-10kg order total

I'd be interested in the likes of Onyx or Counter Culture, but happy to tag along with whatever's decided

We had issues previously where we thought the coffee was shipped freight in a depressurised plane compartment. Dont know how this could be overcome although it was only an issue once.

can you elaborate on this and why it's an issue?

Coffee tasted a bit flat. The bags were all in vacuum iirc. I think the low pressure caused the issue and the c02 release valve left the coffee susceptible. I'll see if I can dig up the thread tomorrow. Memory is rusty.

I'd be interested, I think 2014 was the last time we successfully had one of these.

Certainly wouldn't put me off another buy. We had many very successful outings. Great memories.

I can remember getting 72 bags of coffee delivered to the office, the roaster didn't put my name on the box and reception assumed it was IT equipment and sent it to IT, who opened it up and wondered wtf was going on with someone sending them 22KGs of coffee beans :)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,429 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

Would recommend it to the lurkers and forum regulars both. You can express an interest now, order 250g or 2kg! It's a great way to sample coffee and see what everyone else makes of it while you're sampling it too.

If you're in doubt at all, join in!

good to see interest at this early stage

I think as a starting point we go UK/Europe, and maybe look further afield if it goes well?

There's so many good local roaster I haven't tried yet... And it's unlikely to be as fresh coming such a long distance. I'll stick with local...

Coffee will be fresh. It gets expressed with the high cost split amount the group based on weight of the individuals purchased beans.

That's 11 now who have expressed an interest, so that's great. But usually with these things there can be significant fall-off once we start talking money, so the more the merrier, also the more the higher the purchasing power.

Anyone want to give a few ideas about

    1. Roasters to try to buy from
    2. Methods for distribution once the coffee arrives

I'm more than happy to be part of a test run with a UK roaster or somewhere like The Barn or another EU roaster to try it out and see how it goes!

  • Registered Users Posts: 771 ✭✭✭Akula

    I'm in.

Casino Mocca in Budapest is a top notch european roaster....

great stuff we'll take stock after a week for people who are interested

I'd like to get a coffee that's accessible to as many people as possible, so I think Filter rather than Espresso is the way to go?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,429 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

People can normally order the coffee that they want from the selected roaster and although most people will go for whole bean the option will be there to select ground preference too if required.
