Winter 2017-18 was good here in wexford, snow on 10th December, early Feb, late Feb[BFTE], 18th march.

we got lucky January 2018 with one night of decent snow from the Atlantic, an absolute rarity to get measurable lying snow of 3 to 4 inches in this part of the country from the west. I don't really count the BFTE/Storm Emma as a winter event, it's more of an early Spring event.

Not true, there were lots of snow days in 2018, it even snowed on St Patrick’s day!

    March isn’t winter though.

Who cares in fairness. 2018 delivered piles of snow and that’s all that matters. 2010 and 2018 were amazing snow events in Ireland. 2010 had amazing snow in both November and December. While November Is autumn it still counts as great snow even if it fell 2 weeks before winter officially started.

2018 was incredible in its own way. To get that amount of snow and that depth of cold in late February to early March was remarkable. Then there was also the second round on St Patrick's Day. It's just a pity that even with temperatures so low the snow melted rather quickly due to sublimation. So it was a bittersweet. I suppose the ideal is if it had happened in January, but you're right we have to appreciate it when ever it comes along

Lots of negativity in Netweather about the upcoming cold spell. But it looks to be quite good for the northern part of this island.

850pha next Thursday -6c and freezing level lower than 400m.

Not sure what’s so awful about that, I would think that is productive for low level snow. Perhaps because it’s not an easterly?

that would be uneventful for most of the country, maybe a few wet snowflakes on bin lids in the north. Uppers look marginal at best mostly cold rain or sleet mixed in with snow on the peaks.

An easterly is what most people get excited for as temperatures would be much lower if it's an unstable long fetch easterly with snow showers piling in from the east. Every winter we chase this opportunity and rarely ever get it.

A good easterly is a thing of beauty! Will never forget during that big snow in 2018 standing on the coast looking at the endless conveyor belt of snow coming from the Irish Sea. It just kept on coming and came down so think and fast. Even the coast road was plastered in snow and ice.

November and December 2010 was phenomenal for easterlies too. The snow is always more powdery too

The west and northwest and to a certain degree the southwest would do quite well under next week's north-westerly. Snow could get down to lower levels.
A lot of negativity on here as well, not just netweather. It's a lot better than this time last year. There is a good deal of potential this winter.

No, but it may as well be. Statistically, late Feb/early March is one of the coldest periods of the year as tropical air masses seem to find it more of a struggle to infiltrate this far north during this period of the year.

Thinking back to 2010 and previous years. Most cold or prolonged cold outbreaks came from the north/northwest.

I agree. Northwesterly’s are very good for the northern part of this island, you usually get quite a decent covering of snow above 100m, with often very frequent snow showers in the unstable NW airstreams.

Anyway, I find -8c 850pha is the level for snow to fall to low levels in these types of air masses. You need lower 850 pha temps as the ocean track increases the moisture content of the air parcel/column at the surface, so it is best to have the freezing level as low as possible.

You need to keep in mind a lot of those posters live to the south of the M4 , so a north westerly isn't great for them. So a lot of it is Nimbyism.

Couple of rail cams to keep an eye on as a 'storm system' begins to impact the NE USA:

Deshler, Ohio. (beginning to snow there already, earlier than expected)

And Fairport, in 'upstate' NY. Rain there at the moment but expected to turn to snow later on tonight especially throughout tomorrow:

True. Looks very marginal anywhere though. Cold icy rain for most, with the usual higher routes getting some slushy now.

    Welcome. December!

Chills the very bones, and totally silent.

And the most utterly magnificent moon riding high and majestic over the still, dark ocean at the back here.

The sheer breathtaking beauty of this earth. Of this small place where I am blessed to live.

Just a few lighthouse and marker buoys …flat calm waters shining. reflecting the celestial glory.

And above it all. the huge glowing white of the haloed moon ….riding high in the deepest of breathtaking silences

Theres been an orange tinge to the horizon all day today. It looks like constant sunset. Anyone know why? Also last night the moon was quite golden or even orange.
