Can I substitute a 12g o/u for a 20g semi auto. Just curious if anybody has done so.

The only definite answer you will get is maybe.

If the semi auto is an unrestricted firearm then you can claim that you are changing one unrestricted to another. Both are shotguns and so long as your good reason for the gun is the same (hunting or whatever you ticked on your FCA1) then there really should not be a problem.

Only drawbacks would be the change in caliber and function of the semi auto as opposed to the O/U.

I've seen lads change a .17hmr to a 243 and at the same time seen lads been refused a change from a 6.5 to 308. Another issue that is becoming a common thread is good reason. Lads that used to try and change a rifle to a shotgun (or vice versa) are now being challenged on their good reason. The rifle was granted for "X" purpose which cannot be done by the shotgun so because the good reason which was offered when the person first applied for the license has changed and all you re doing is changing the gun on the current license, the substitution is refused.

The only way to find out is to stick in an FCA1 sub application and see if it goes through. If its refused then simply submit a full application, and license the semi auto and/or sell the O/U.
