VRT price is making car nearly 7k over value

    Hi all

So basically.. Am buying a jeep in England. Sportage to be exact. Only a 2012.. Did the vrt and they are looking for just under 8k. The car is costing 7 thousand pounds.

Is this not extreme? It's not like its brand new. The guy I spoke to today said thats the price..

I've already booked the ferry and paid deposit on it. When I checked it last month the vrt was coming in at 2355 euros.

Guy was very unhelpful. He basically said tough sh×t..

It's a 1.7 diesel.. No xtras really. Basic. Its not like the 2litre sport edition.

What do you mean you ‘did the vrt’? Did you do an online calculation or did you actually present the car for a VRT appointment? It sounds like you don’t even have the car yet so I assume you just done an online calculation.

You probably didn’t enter the Nox amount which will add €4,850 to the VRT calculation.

Btw your gonna get screwed importing a 2012 diesel

What does the online tool say?

Quick VRT calculator job says €3485 VRT, €1583 CO2 and €1785 Nox so that adds up yoooo 7k ish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭bs2014

    Here

That looks like the vrt on the full brand new price. Its 23pc of the 30k amount

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,817 ✭✭✭Darc19

Why would you buy an 8 year old car in the uk. There's feck all savings and getting to the stage where you are spending on repairs.

Between vrt and nox, I reckon you'll be way over the top price you'd pay here

What is Nox? Sorry as I said I'm new to this.

Those old cars have high emmissions and the government announced they would increase the VRT. You are better off trying to get out of the deal.

What is Nox? Sorry as I said I'm new to this.

Nitrous oxide. Poison from emissions basically, penalises older diesels heavily on import.

This was all over the news after the last budget.

From Jan 2020 old diesels are penalised on their pollutants (NOX) over and above the typical VRT.

    Pull pin

This is why I think u were being smart.. I stated at the start I don't know about this. I'm looking for advice. I've looked at the picture. I posted the picture and couldn't understand it

You could have replied explaining what it meant if u knew what it meant.. No need to say picture is right there.

I didn't ask how I was being smart?

You will have to buy a euro6 diesel or petrol of any gen... Max charge on petrol is €600 Nox tax.

The max is just shy of €5k on a dirty diesels....

They don't want you to bring in anything euro5 or less as they are extremely bad to our health.

Who do you ring to double check the online quote,im interested in a hybrid superb..only 1 spec in the vrt site, but 4different specs in England..4 grand vrt is what comes up plus 200 nox..there're much higher speced cars over there but not showing on the vrt site..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

Even if you feel a quote is too high, you have to pay and then can question it and provide proof of others selling for the lower price.
This is pointless though on any older diesel.

You are looking at 2016 cars onwards in most cases.

I did ring today and spoke to a limerick agent in revenue. Asked him to check and he point blank refused. He said he gets over 20 of these calls a day and no he is not checking it for me. He said its not his job to check and if it shows up a price online thne u have to pay it. He was so ignorant. Point blank refused to help me even though I told him my situation. Deposit was paid on jeep and I've paid foe the ferry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,817 ✭✭✭Darc19

Put the car through an auction in the uk and get something else.

You entered the car incorrectly into the VRT calculator.

There is no way that you can buy a car for 7k in the UK that has an OMSP (market value) of 30k here. At a guess, you probably entered the year as a 2020 model

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 377 ✭✭walshtipp

The NOx value for that car is only 0.125g/km
You did not enter a value on your calculation, therefore it defaulted to maximum value of 0.251g/km.
If you calculate the VRT using proper NOx value, it amounts to €4,183.

    Statistical Code - 40388336

I said this at the beginning, OP you didn’t enter the Nox amount and it defaulted to charging you the maximum amount of €4,850. Another poster has just pointed out the correct amount of Nox the car produces and gives a total of €4183

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭tinkerbell2310

Send the car back OP. Clowns like you don’t deserve nice things

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,895 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Back out of the sale, the NOX charges are there to stop people importing diesels.
