    Neil Young 5-1 Iron Maiden
    Arcade Fire 5-3 Queen
M61: The Monkees 1-5 Carole King
M62: The Cure 5-2 The White Stripes
M63: The Beach Boys 5-2 The Eagles
    M64: Greenday 2-5 Bon Jovi

And on that BOMBSHELL, the winners of the eighties tournament bite the dust!

Nirvana, Eminem, Oasis, Bob Marley & Elvis are also casualties on the first day! As well as the cast from Fame.

Think of the people who will wake to that result in the morning and the ensuing coffee spillage!

Will you sleep tonight? I won't. But then that's becuase of my neighbour's dog.

Thanks for all the votes, especially to you night owls.

I'll be back tomorrow around 6pm for round 2. Be there as there's some big match-ups!*

*And S Club 7. Dammit Burton!

The gig-going, skinny jean/Converse/slouch beanie wearing, obscure artist searching, "Yeah, man, the record had real depth with really eclectic sounds" saying, Arctic Monkey-ing over-35s are running amok.

I will no longer be partaking in this fiasco.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Arcade Fire obscure.

Nirvana lost out to Johnny Cash, Eminem to Black Sabbath, Oasis to The Clash, Bob Marley to Steely Dan and Elvis to Creedence. Not really much evidence of hipsters running amok there. If anything, it displays a significantly older voter bias. But don't let that stop you throwing your toys out of the pram over your own weird pet peeve again.

Strange one that, love them or hate them, Queen gotta be in the top 10 acts of all time. But, this is boards....:)

How the hell did the overrated and boring Arcade Fire beat one of the greatest bands of all time, that's just pure madness

Also a bit of a stretch to call them good :p They're okay, in a "If they were playing in my kitchen, I wouldn't leave the room if I were already in it, but I also wouldn't go downstairs to hear them" kind of way..

Freddie Mercury's undeniably excellent voice and showmanship aside, I find Queen hard to warm to. I just find them pompous and overblown, and occasionally painful to listen to. I like some of their songs (mainly their later ones like "Who Wants To Live Forever" and "The Show Must Go On", which actually had a bit of heart to them) but otherwise they were very much style over substance. And <opens can of worms> "Bohemian Rhapsody" is definitely up there with the most overrated and overplayed songs of all time. :pac:

Arcade Fire may not be the greatest act of all-time but Funeral and The Suburbs are both excellent albums. Their other albums are a bit more hit-and-miss but still contain some real gems.

And for the record I'm under 35 and have never worn Converse, a beanie or skinny jeans. :p

    Well that's just unnecessary.

If it was the first time that the poster had an almost identical rant about what is essentially a bit of fun, I'd agree. But we'd been subjected to that nonsense previously, so I don't feel it was unnecessary at all
    in this instance.

Ah, there's history there? I just thought it was a humour post, given the gifs and such.

We're all dealing with the Queen shocker in our own ways.:pac:

I must give Arcade Fire a proper go. I know about 5 of their songs.

Wow, Hans Zimmer and Elton John squared off. I would have been badly stuck on where to place my vote, probably would have abstained.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭Reberetta

I don't necessarily agree but that is an amusing sentence.:)

    You still have Michael Jackson.;)

    5pm kick-off for today's action folks!

Second round is first to SIX VOTES.

I missed the start of the knockouts. Why was there 8 acts in the first match?

I missed the start of the knockouts. Why was there 8 acts in the first match?

Because of my unpreparedness mainly. :D

And I wanted to include as many music acts as possible without it being superflous.

Late to the party.I'm getting annoyed already looking at those results. This should be good!

    My own opinions follow:

The Arcade Fire over Queen one is just inexplicable. I don't even like Queen all that much and I can admit that they were one of the most important bands in the history of popular music. Arcade Fire are merely pretty good.

S-Club 7 over Daft Punk? Absolutely nuts.

T-Rex over Tom Waits? Ah, heyor lads...

Oi, leave T-Rex alone. Though I agree Waits is excellent. It was an unfortunate mashup, and nowhere in the same league as Arcade-gate.
