And cracking semi's they sure were. And spot on about the Token gestures. The Camogie Association could teach the the GAA a few things IMO. The young women in our lives & communities benefit so much by the example these athletes set. There's so many traps young women & girls can fall into & sport can provide self confidence and so much more.
When I see the viewing numbers, especially when there's no fans in attendance it makes me sad.
I for one really enjoyed the weekends semifinal action. I think someone forgot to tell them it wasn't Championship.

Huge thanks to the Camogie Association for streaming so many games that I'd never have had the chance to see.
Now that COVID-19 is mostly under control here in my area(Southern New England), I'm just getting back to trying to gauge the interest here for a local club.
I frequently get kids coming up to me & asking about what I'm doing while at my local wall(back of an unused school on the town square) & funny enough, the girls are often faster at picking up some of the skills I show them than the boys. They listen when I show them the basics. Especially when I try to break the ingrained habit of holding the hurl like a baseball bat. Not an easy task in a country where kids grow up with a baseball bat.
Also, now that lacrosse(yuk) has become more mainstream(was always a "rich kid sport" played only at private schools or wealthy districts) they recognize that playing a bit of camogie in the off season can really help w/their game. Soccer is huge in my town & it's the same thing as far as development & honing their skills.
Biggest barrier is $$. It's tough to convince parents to spend money on equipment for a sport they've never heard of. I always bring every hurl I own in case the kids are out & stop by any yard sales to pick up old hockey helmets & soccer cleets.
I've seen quite a few with some serious potential & just wish I could do more to help. We've tons of "Irish" pubs who I've approached about sponsorship & most have never heard of hurling let alone camogie. Anyway, just rambling. looking forward to the upcoming weekend. 7:30 does seem a bit crazy. ✌ðŸ¼

Anyone try the bamboo hurls? How do they compare w/Cultec sticks? Our heat & humidity does a number on ash & forget about winter. Ash cracks really fast when temps get below 0° Learned that the hard way breaking my favorite stick from B. Barcoe

Well done Swamp Cat on spreading the love of our beautiful game. !!

Its great that the games are being streamed for all to watch , but they have done themselves no favours by fixing, or agreeing to, that throw in time.
For us here in Kilkenny its a 2 hr journey to the ground, and it relly is putting people off going ! (im not 100% sure on what the situation with attendance due to covid is)

Best of luck getting the locals into hurling and/or camogie! I know from coaching an U16 camogie team here, that its a sport for girls that really love the game, as its not a game that you can just go and just play...It takes practice and bravery.
You have the club nickname sorted anyway - "the Swamp Cats" :)

Quite a few girls changed to the Cultecs when they became the 'in thing' on when released , but found when playing in wet conditions, the hurleys were very hard to hold on to while falling through after striking the ball!.
They changed back to wooden soon after,

I dont know of anyone using bamboo.

Thank you very much for the kind words & the advice. appreciate the support. also the comment about the hurls. The kids usually go straight for my beat up cultec. But given their size/age it's no surprise. It weighs close to half what my star hurley's weigh. I don't mind using it. Actually prefer it over the really heavy sticks I've ended up with recently. Hate buying them blind but no other options for now.
Have a meeting w/the sports writer @ my local newspaper. Hoping to get something written up to see how much attention I can attract. we'll see.

7:30 will definitely make for a long day for supporters. shame because it's guaranteed to hurt attendance. Both the time and location. If it's got to be Croker an earlier time would make a bit more sense(not sure what other matches will be there). Anyway, hopefully they'll get a crowd & we get a cracker. ...and win! Enjoy Greenspurs! Take care

Anyone know if there's anyway to watch the Final from overseas? My VPN service has Irish servers. Wasn't paying attention & assumed it was on YT not rte2.
    Thx

Galway 0-9 Kilkenny 0-6 HT. Galway on top overall but still only 3 in it

Great start to the 2nd half for Kilkenny, now leading 1-9 to 0-9 after 35 min

Think there might have been a free out for kilkenny before Galway scored their goal.

Kilkenny 1-18 Galway 1-15 FT. Real championship feel to the last ten minutes, undoubtedly the two best teams at the minute.

    Full-time: Galway 1-15 Kilkenny 1-18

    https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/camogie/second-half-blitz-on-galway-sees-kilkenny-claim-camogie-league-division-1-title-40560432.html

A stop start first half, but then a ding dong second half.
Kilkenny go from 3 behind at half time to 5 in front,
I thought Galway would do it , as Kilkenny struggled to cope with the tribeswomen running at them , and Kilkenny really struggled with it in the first half, but Tobin, Dormer , Doyle really got to grips with it in the second half, with tackling in groups , and/or 'tactical fouling' .

Another milestone for my club, as a 5 members were on the panel, with 4 playing.
And on top of Aoife Doyle winning the Player of the Match in the All Ireland final in December , goalkeeper Aoife Norris won it for yesterdays performance.
(personally i didnt think she would have won, but it wasnt my choice) :)

Now back to the Clubs ....

All Ireland quarter finals this Saturday, Kilkenny v Wexford at 5 followed by Tipperary v Waterford at 6:45. Both games live on RTE 2.

quick question on the semi final line up, Cork and Galway presumably kept apart but is it open draw as to whom they meet in the semi finals

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,419 ✭✭✭The White Feather

Cork and Galway will be in one pot - QF winners in the other

One of the group toppers ends up in 1/4 final and then the other 2 group toppers are kept away from each other in the semi draw. Its tough on Tipp as they won their group too but should they beat Waterford they play Cork or Galway. One of the group winners is always unlucky

Poor show by wexford. Second game a bit more interesting.

Cats looked pretty slick for much of today's game. T. Shefflin's influence is obvious. Really nice/ smart style of play. One I wish our men's senior's played closer to. Wexford never really looked up for it. Not sure if that was down to the Cats entirely but guess we'll find out. D.G's stick pass waa fantastic even if it ended w/a wide. She's a special talent. Lots of good performances. Only caught the last bit of Tipp v Wat. Not a bad warmup for tomorrow.

semi finals this Sunday, live on RTE.

Galway v Tipperary at 2. Galway too strong I'd imagine

Cork v Kilkenny at 4. Should be tighter than the first game but Kilkenny to win for me. Both themselves and Galway ahead of the rest imo

Galway clearly there for the beating in the final I think

Tipperary not a mile off being a legit challenger to the Top 3 at the moment

Marty and his colleague's love in with tipp was embarrassing........

Ref sending the wrong player off was a joke..... What if galway lost?..

Rebellettes knock out the Champions. Deservingly so.

Another close shave , and Cork came out on top..

Sending off was correct, and the panels (especially Rena Buckley) attempt at saying it was kinda harsh was a bit "ahh shur she doesnt deserve to miss the final" was a bit lame.

The sending off in the Galway V Tipp game was a joke.

Second game not very free flowing so far.

Hope Antrim pull away now and win this one.

Disappointing few posts on this thread today. The senior game now is really good so far. The standard of play has really came on strong this last number of years.

Only went to Senior match yesterday and really enjoyed it (neutral)

Galway definitely were the better side all-round and were worthy of the win but it was tight.

I would question the selection of Orla Cronin - Even though she would’ve been part of training I assume, their prep surely was mostly not including her. To then turn around last minute and tell her she’s actually playing had to have thrown a bit of a spanner in. Perhaps could’ve even started the 1-15 and brought her on after 10-15 mins if it obviously wasn’t working.

The gap between Galway/KK/Cork is fairly minimal but I think Tipp could give the group a fright in the next couple of years.

Glad to see it did not work for Cork or Cronin yesterday up to there usually tricks it was a clear strike in the semi final she got her red card typical Cork they can not expect the letter of the law.

What was the attendance? Croker looked empty. Guess because they couldn't be encouraging people to go with free tickets in schools due to covid.

It's the propaganda that annoys me. Stop pretending like there's a big interest in it. Evanne Ni Chuilinn was saying "it's great to have the fans back" or something like that. Then followed it up with "It wasn't full today...it wasn't allowed to be full".

Really Evanne? 40k people were allowed yet the stadium was empty.
