It's hardly a secret the Golf isn't the epitome of style, they've been the same boring looking cars for 40 years and people know that. Doesn't stop them being one of the best selling cars in Ireland though.

My parents been driving Opels for 25 years now and this is the first time we might consider changing brand as Opel have really fallen to the way side. Such a shame. Genuinely looking forward to see will the new Mokka keep us in the brand but I've a feeling it will be too much Frenchy for my liking.

On a side note, we've a 16 Astra SRI diesel and hands down the spec, infotainment, torque from engine and fuel economy is unreal. 90km from new and I haven't reset the trip. Averaging 5.0l per 100km and that's mixed driving. I know Opel get a hard wrap but hands down never had a problem.
Ironically I drive a 16 Golf Gtd with identical miles and have been out a fortune changing wear and tear parts etc. Not a scientific comparison but my point in general is Opels are every bit as good as VAGS if not better. Personally I'm a car head but genuinely if the astra steering wasn't so light I'd seriously drive an astra as bang for buck they are a great buy.

And on a side note the Opel service club is brilliant. The discount applied is a genuine saving. A basic oil service for 120e on our astra is very good for main dealer.

Ye Irish people unfortunatly are very conservative and slow to change at times. There loss. They are missing out on better more reliable cars that cost less sometimes even. My meighbour changed from a MK5 Golf to a Hyundai i30 as the Golf was just nothing but trouble.

Let’s not lose the run of ourselves, an i30 or Astra is just as ‘bland’ as the (hugely more popular) Golf.

Disagree. An Astra is much more stylish and makes a Golf look ancient.
The latest i30 while not been bad I agree is a bit bland but the model before it was very stylish.
The Kia Ceed on the other hand is very stylish and so is the Renault Megane.

Girlfriend has a 2011 Astra this past 4-5 years. It's the SRI spec level I think, and she loves it. I am very fond of it, too. I'd definitely rate the Astra as one of the better cars I've been inside. I like the Astra/Insignia 'loads of buttons' dashboard, and I quite like the exterior bodyshape/styling of the Astra hatchback.

In relation to the New Opel Mokka.. is it just me or in a lot of the pics do the the front wheels look marginally bigger than the rear ones?! It took me a while to realise that's not actually the case. :o

Received a Mokka as a courtesy car for a couple of days while my own car is in the garage

Worst car I’ve ever driven - there is next to no room between the clutch pedal and the foot rest to the left, such that every time you push down the clutch the left side of your foot catches on the footrest. Any time you move your foot to or from the footrest it catches on the clutch pedal.

It’s actually dangerous and it’s driving me insane.

I haven’t got particularly large feet (10) and I’ve never experienced this with any of the umpteen cars I’ve driven before. From a cursory google other people have had the same problem.

    Avoid.
