Might seem like a strange question but the guy did have a bike shop so should know his stuff and he can afford a good one.

I think it's a Giant City Disc of some type but not sure. Here's a very recent image but there are many others out there in recent days. Varadkar-Martin-and-Ryan-about-to-make-historic-coalition-market.jpg?resize=696%2C398&ssl=1

I don't know what bike it is but I don't like the look of the saddle angle.

On the news you could see it from another angle and I think it was a Fuji obviously what his lbs was selling

Isn't very fond of wearing a helmet either.. not really a great example when he is the one pushing for more for cyclists.

Please make it go away. Every thread turns into silly 'should be wearing a helmet' nonsense.

Wasn't there the story years ago about him cycling into the Dail each day, and his driver following with his bag/laptop etc..?

Mod Note: There is a megathread on helmet discussion, you can bring the helmet talk there, it's off topic for this thread.

On topic, what bike shop did he own? Where was it?

Wikipedia says he founded cycling safaris, a cycling tour company - could that be it?

Oh interesting, I think they were Malahide/North Dublin based? Or I could be getting them mixed up with the Irish Cycling Centre

If you like it it will be on the market in a couple of years once he lands his pension. Remember that clown Gormely? Couldn't go anywhere in Sandymount back in the day without seeing him on his bicycle. Once he got his pension he ****ed the useless thing into the nearest hedge

    Helmets discourage people from cycling.

Just keep doing more of the same, doing it in a massively disconnected piecemeal fashion so you cant actually cycle A-B on any of the routes really and god forbid if you would like to bring a bike onto public transport.

He is probably on 90k, a driver would cost circa 30k. Somehow I dont see him having a requirement for a driver

If he did you could expect it to be splashed all over the press. Just listen to interview with Pat Kenny when he mentioned he had a diesel and Pat nearly jumped down the radio....then when he said it was bio diesel poor old Pat had to sit back down

All Ministers had state cars back then. TDs are on 90k, Ministers even more, plus allowances.

Wonder is he related to Aidan Ryan/Fintan Ryan (Sorrento). I know Aidan worked at UCD bikes for a while, might still be. He also went on Cycling Guided tours (Irish Cycling Safaris) in Spain/ France as a guide/organiser.

That's the real problem with the Greens right there. Their support base is made up of people like this frantically nannying and policing everyone else. Wedded to the cycling ecofantasy but even when their man is "in" they cannot control the instinctive puritanical wagging finger. Same reason for the impulsive explosion of righteousness and correctness when he said "that word".

A cyclist and former school principal driven to give someone a good telling off for not wearing a helmet. What else could she be?

I don't know. I've met a fair few Green members/supporters in my time and none have been helmet Nazis.

It’s a big girls bike...which suits him perfectly.

Someone asked what bike shop he owned. It was the UCD bike shop I think. He co-owned it, it said in the Forbes report. I assume that's right, though it also initially said he was going to be Prime Minister.

In general, they seem to try to be photographed in normal clothing. Ciarán Cuffe used to be occasionally tut-tutted at in the media as well.

EDIT: see the "rolling press conference" photo in the Forbes article:

Apparently it was both Ryan and his then party leader, John Gormley that cycled to the Dáil often followed by the garda driver in the car...

I think the point is the Garda has to follow them anyway, so if they drive/walk/run/cycle a Garda car was going to be driving after them

Seems like a bit of point the finger at the Greens in the middle of the crisis...which os course as we know worked.

The main point of that story was who ended up with the 150k merc :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭tomasrojo

I wonder is the "files too heavy to carry on their bike" bit really "too sensitive to carry". People who don't cycle often have the most absurd idea of how little you can carry on a bike.

Don't know about the "tokenism" bit. They' were getting a bit of exercise, and normalising the idea that "important" people can cycle for transport.

It looks as if the journalist was looking for signs of abject hypocrisy and didn't find that much: "often on call", "occasionally borrowed". Really weak stuff.

She could be Fianna Fail. She could be Fine Gael. She could be Labour or SD. She could be Sinn Fein or PBP.

She could be anything really. The letter doesn't tell you anything about her political leanings, apart from her willingness to take a swipe at Ryan in public. My conclusion would be that she's less likely to be a Green supporter than any other party.

Are you sure about that? Because I'd swear that I've seen fairly regularly, maybe two or three times a year around south inner city, Ballsbridge area on this bike, often on the Grand Canal cycle track where it looks like he took this photo.

    https://twitter.com/JohnGormley/status/1159182901575147520

    There are quite a few entries on his Twitter feed that suggest that he cycles regularly;

Are these posts all part of some massive conspiracy to persuade us that he still cyclists (though it's hard to see what benefit would arise to him from this conspiracy) or did you just make up this little fantasy about the bike in the hedge yourself, because you really don't like Greens?
