Aer Lingus has ordered another 2 A320neo aircraft from Airbus.

The order, dated November 30, appears in the Airbus orders and deliveries data for last month.

I wonder whether EI should be thinking about getting orders in for more to act as replacements for the older A320s....

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

Good news. What's the deal with IAG orders vs. EI orders? Would these two be (a claim) from an IAG order? In terms of EI vs. IAG vs. Leases... Do we think EI will have less leased frames going forward and will take IAG ordered frames going forward (as opposed to the current mostly pre-IAG EI fleet). Does IAG (the group) lease the frames to it's airlines or are they purchased outright in a similar way to a direct purchase from Airbus - assume there's some financial jiggery-pokery to maximize profits (multinational type thing - where money is booked in various ways - do IAG (the group) charge member airlines more than they pay for example, or do the airlines buy them directly from Airbus from prenegotiated price/terms?).

Aer Lingus ordering A320neo to replace their current fleet is a no-brainer. Its going to happen. No "ifs" about it.

    As regards IAG versus the airlines. It seems that their are 2 avenues.;

IAG use their clout to make large orders years in advance.

Closer to the time the individual airlines present their own business case to get some of those airframes assigned to them. The airline has to repay any finance given by IAG, (with a profit margin)

This system would have been in play a few years back. IAG had orders for A330s in place but BA and IB wanted different aircraft. Thus IAG were able to allocate A330s slots to EI and defer the EI A350 slots while allocating those to IB. Ultimately the A330 was a more sutiable aircraft for EI.

In addition to that if an individual airline has a specific requirement they will lobby IAG to finance their own order. (IAG had a large A320neo order in place, I think that 3-4 years ago 60 of those 120+ slots were allocated already.) So the Smartavia A320s were outside this. I'm guessing that EI were able to show IAG that they needed them over any other member and get the finance in place to snap them up after htey were suddenly in limbo.

Somebody mentioned earlier that the lease expires on the two Qatar A330s (EIK & EIL) in 2024 and giving that they haven't had a cabin refit its looking like they'll probably be leaving the fleet.

If that's the case should EI realistically have already placed an order with Airbus for their replacements ? Or will we likely see them go about it the same way as the two A320neos they aquired ? Or will they be replaced with XLRs ?

Or with other second hand 330 CEOs. Who knows.

Its mentioned on Flickr that EI DEO is in Shannon to get its IRFU livery replaced by the new standard livery. Shame if true

Can someone explain to Aer Lingus there are airports on the Island outside the M50 again today other throwing crumbs to Cork. Nothing for Shannon

  • Registered Users Posts: 750 ✭✭✭MICKEYG

Dublin airport is outside the M50.

Flights go where the most demand is.

Dont expect anything for SNN. Aer Lingus focus is DUB. Very hard to add routes from SNN now the base has been closed. Cant see anything new from SNN in the future.

They are also down 320 since before the pandemic. Some DUB routes are being operated by the NEO so it frees 320 up next year.

Exactly this. O'Leary said it at the Oireachtas Tranport committee. The demand is for Dublin. Everyone wants to go to Dublin. It's that simple. Unpalatable for people in Shannon, Cork, Kerry and Waterford. He also said there were too many airports on the an Ireland for our size. I'd have to agree with him there also

Aer Lingus is a 100% private company. Maximising shareholder return has to be its objective and it is (largely) free of the political interference that it once used to suffer from.

Agree with him on two many airports as well. Theres two many airports competing for the same traffic outside of DUB.

Ryanair had a huge operation at Shannon a good few years back, they have had loads of routes at Cork too. They have closed a lot of them as they don’t make money due to low demand or low yield or both.

there are numerous comments on forums like these that Aer Lingus should remember where Cork is - they know exactly where it is, but believe they can make more money at Dublin.

In a way it’s SNN versus Cork that could be the problem - if there was one Southern airport then it might actually do better.

that’s not to say routes in these airports can’t work, KLM to Amsterdam being a case in point but it is different in that it feeds LH.

That’s interesting, does anyone know what Europes will be operated on NEOs next year?

Does it have rugby player decals on the ample white area or is #greenspirit no more?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,813 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

It is now scheduled for today, ex-SNN at 1600. I haven't seen photos yet.

Aer Lingus seem to have announced another new route on their Instagram page..Heraklion, Crete

  • Registered Users Posts: 798 ✭✭✭LiamaDelta

Strange how they haven't mentioned this at all on the website and it's not in the booking engine though the other three are. Perhaps an over-excitable marketer.

I say it a touch up hasn't been touched up in a few years

Malcolm Nason on Flickr is commenting a repaint into standard livery. https://www.flickr.com/photos/shanair/52547137046/

With the next rugby world cup next September / October it would make sense to return DEI and DEO to standard livery.

Then next year maybe two of the neos could go into an updated livery for the 2023 world cup with the current players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,813 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

EI-DEO just landed at Dublin - standard new livery from what I could see.

The post stating Heraklion was commencing has been deleted ..

Heraklion was mentioned a couple of months back with the S23 slot release, was probably planned initially but dropped for the final schedule.

The Instagram post also featured a very obvious recreation of the BBC News theme remixed with Sky News. It was listed as an original audio so likely done by a professional studio for these kind of short social media videos but a bit of a risk with copyrights etc.
