I hope someone went for Wild Honey :p

    In the days
When we were swinging from the trees
    I was a monkey
Stealing honey from a swarm of bees
    I could taste
I could taste you even then
And I would chase you down the wind

The cats didnt suit me so I let someone else have a go :)

U2 - Bad is my favourite U2 song but I'm by no means a connoisseur. I'd only know a dozen or so songs

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 5,768 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

Being a big fan of U2, that category was a difficult one for me. I wanted to select something from Achtung Baby, my favourite album of theirs, but ended up going for something else.

The rest, I don't even know if my selections actually fit the themes!! :)

Lets kick things off with some U2

In 6th place is Vertigo, savage song, brilliant live

    5 points for Trigger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 7th place, The Streets have no name

I'd forgotten how good this song is, the video is absolutely savage, well worth watching.

4 points seems very little for Osh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Onto 5th Place with Miss Sarajevo

Another brilliant video and cameo from Pavarotti

6 points for The Purple Tin

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 5,768 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

I agree about Vertigo, sounds so much better live, I reckon they wrote it having in mind the live performances!!!

And Miss Sarajevo: U2, Brian Eno, Pavarotti, brilliant stuff!!

In joint 8th, Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me, Kill me

I'd forgotten about Bono's character McFisto until I saw this video again, I remember recording a U2 concert off the radio and he featured

3 points apiece for Homer J Fong and Rebereta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

I don't think I ever knew the name of this song but it is Hawkmoon 269 and it is in 4th place

    Quintessential early U2

    7 points for Zaph

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 10th place is one of the U2 songs I like the least cause people assume its a rebel song and its a peace song - Sunday, Bloody Sunday\

Still a good song, it really is just personal bias

    1 point for Phatkev, sorry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

And we are onto the top three

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    In 3rd place Electrical Storm

Released in 2002 as part of their Best of 1990-2000 compilation obviously

    Love the chorus

And another amazing video for Electrical Storm!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Very happy with that, was a bit of a gamble to go for Electrical Storm, as I don't think it's a fan favourite, but I've always loved it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Onto 2nd and its copied straight from the OP but its a savage song
    Stay Faraway, so close

Love this song, another great video, even with Bono above on that monument in Berlin
The ending to the song is brilliant

9 points for the one man here Irish Aris

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 5,768 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

hehe, I have to say I was very intrigued to see it in your OP. But I just love it!! The Berlin connection through Wim Wenders. . . just sublime!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

And in 1st place is Staring at the Sun

Reminds me of my leaving cert, used to skip the class before lunch regularly and go for a coffee in a pub in town, meet some of the girls. This song always seemed to be on, love it to this day

    :(

wasnt the greatest category for me, I wouldnt be a massive fan of U2 (I'd only heard of 4 of the songs on this list:o). I use play Sunday Bloody Sunday in a long forgotten cover band, always got a good kick out of playing it

Funny, I'd never consider this early U2 as Rattle and Hum was their 6th album. But in terms of their longevity it definitely counts as early U2 at this stage. I almost went with Out of Control, which is as early as you can get, but I suspect it wouldn't have done as well looking at the top three.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Right I'll crack on with R2 the songs with a story in them

In 7th place - Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

Probably scores lower cause its so well known, great song though

    4 points for Irish Aris

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,024 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

Woop love that u2 song, no-one picked Pride or One surprisingly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 6th place Janis Ian - At Seventeen

Another one thats well known, very melancholy

    5 points for Reberetta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 8th place Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under the Bridge

I loved this when it came out first but over time not so much, not sure about the story element of it either

    3 points for Trigger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 5th Place Bruce Springsteen - Black Cowboy

Probably the best story of the round, hadn't heard this before

6 points for The Purple Tin

    2 points for ShaneU

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 4th place Perfume Genius - Mr Peterson

I'd never heard of the song or artist, really liked this. "It's quite short and has a deceptively pretty melody but tells a rather bleak story" - damn right it does - a teacher trading weed for BJs

    7 points for Homer J

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Delighted to get third place in both rounds, and glad The Monkees were appreciated (as they always should be).

That was a great round - loved all of those songs.

That was a great round - loved all of those songs.

Likewise, delighted with my placings. I fear it's all going to go to sh*t after this.

And I love The Monkees, they were a criminally underrated band.

Ah well, knew my song was a risk. But it's an amazing song if it clicks with you.

Its an allusion to the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Right in 7th Place - Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi - Gonna Write Me A Letter

This is very similar to Otis Taylor - Nasty Letter, its at the end of Public Enemies, and its all I could think about

    4 points for Irish Aris

Sorry should have said this is the country/folk round

In 6th Milk Carton Kids: White Girl

This song could easily have been in the story round, I liked it

5 points for The Purple Tin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 8th place The Low Anthem - To Ohio

Nice song, I'd prefer something more upbeat but still a good pick

    3 points for Deleted User

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

In 5th place and old favourite Mary Black - No Frontiers

Would have scored higher only I know it so well, great song

    6 points for Trigger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,640 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red
