Cancelling sky is annoying, but easy. I have done it twice in the last year or so (once for me, once for my father in law). Went like this:
    1. Ring sky
    2. Wait a stupidly long time on hold
    3. Get through to somebody. Tell them you want to cancel. Tell them you do not want any offers. Tell them you do not want to have to be told about other prices/etc. Tell them you are happy to wait on hold until the cancellation has been finished.
    4. Wait a few minutes.
    5. Cancelled.

When the phone calls from win-back team start, just answer - tell them you no longer want to receive these calls and they will stop.

Be up front and straightforward with them and it'll all be good.

Is it any wonder you got "threatening letters". You just cant cancel direct debits at will.

I have to admit my own experience was much better.

I used the link I posted in August (https://www.sky.com/help/articles/cancel-sky-tv-roi)

Someone called me back within 24 hours. We had a fairly brief discussion around why I was cancelling. I was paying roughly €60 a month, he asked would a discount help. I said its value to me was only around €20 a month, and a 66% discount would be unreasonable. He agreed it would, and went ahead and cancelled.

He went through the cancellation info, told me my "finishing date", and explained about equipment return.

A pro-rata amount was taken for September. I'm expecting to receive a postage-paid envelope/packaging in the next few days, and I'll pop their equipment into that, and drop it to the post-office within x amount of time that they had specified. Can't remember what it was at the moment, but it seemed like a reasonable amount of time to get to a post-office - maybe a month. If I don't return the equipment within that period, they'll charge me for it - again, pretty reasonable.

Anyone know what number to call sky Ireland from the UK as the o818 and freephone numbers don't work? Was put on hold for so long when in Kerry trying to cancel my sky TV that I ran out of phone credit. Now look like I'll have to cancel the direct debit without speaking to them because phone, e-mail and web chat has all failed and risk legal action. Terrible company

Go into your online account and there is an email option. I dont know (not a subscriber) if its just a general "contact" email address or a specific one but you give your notice with your contact details, including your UK number, and they will call you within 48 hours. Dont cancel your direct debit as that will have a knock on effect.

How do you risk legal action?

Interesting update. My "return the stuff" date was for some time in November. I received the box to put everything in (very neat packaging), and a return label. Boxed everything up and brought it to the post office on September 29th. I was posting another package at the time, and got a receipt with both tracking numbers on it.

The other package (similar size) was delivered within a few days. The package for Sky is still sitting in my local sorting office and doesn't seem to have moved on.
Your delivery has been sorted in local place at 18:27 on 29 September 2020

The other item, dropped at the same post office at the same time, arrived in Portlaoise the next day and was duly delivered.

I'm half waiting for Sky to contact me in a month charging me for not returning the equipment. Trying to decide if I should contact them now first and tell them to chase the package, or just wait for it to play out, but it's weird that the package hasn't moved from the sorting office in over 2 weeks.

You should be contacting An Post and not Sky.

id assume, given that have sent prepaid packaging, that your responsibility ends once you pack it up and hand it over to the post office. once you have proof you did that i wouldnt bother doing anything else.

I boxed and returned my equipment, then received an email from Sky saying I would be charged if I didn't return ASAP. Forwarded them proof of postage and screenshot of An Post tracking showing delivered and heard nothing for weeks. Just checked my bank and have been charged €130 with no warning or response to my last email. They make it impossible to contact them Tried various numbers which only gave options to pay a bill or get technical support and then hung up even though I said issue not resolved.

Contact your bank and request that they reverse the €130.

    Then block the Sky DD.

    100% don't do this.

No, but doing things like that is not a good way to go about sorting out issues. Liaise with them, get them to sort it properly.

Starting chargeback proceedings is fine, but stopping a DD just leads to hassle - the company (Sky in this case) can just keep applying for it as a "trusted" provider.

Step 1 would always be liaise with the provider (Sky) and get them to sort it from their end
Step 2 would be to initiate a chargeback if they're not responding (your bank will need details of what you've done to try resolve the issue, so keep track of every date/time you tried to contact the provider, and what they said).

According to the post by Denisef86, the poster has made multiple efforts to sort this with Sky already with no avail.

I agree that chargebacks, and DD blocking, should not be the first port of call but chargebacks are there to protect the consumer when retailers cannot be contacted or are acting unreasonable. Chargebacks have a time and place.

So I cancelled my sky and broadband via phone on the 5th of Oct. Been a customer for 6 years. Broadband has just crapped itself last few months and Sky didn't seem bothered to try and fix it. TV package has always been quality... I'm now waiting for a call back, hopefully, from their team about staying on -> how long do they take to make this call?!

Check your account online, you will likely have an offer there for you.

I cancelled ages ago, I had offer online immediately. It was after the service switched off that they started calling me.

Cheers dulpit, I've no offers online sadly - will hold out for the call!

cancelled sky a few days ago as they wouldn't give me a good deal, they seem to have accepted the cancellation and sent me an email to confirm. will they still phone and offer before cancellation expires? due to be cut off on xmas day which wouldn't be ideal.

They didn't with me. Once I'd cancelled, that was it. They sent packaging for me to return their equipment to them. If you have "normal" recordings on the box they'll still work until you return the equipment, so you could prerecord a few bits to last you over Christmas Day/Stephen's Day? I'm not sure if you've recorded from premium channels if they'd still work.

Newport did you cancel by phone or email? And sky know its xmas a bad time to cancel. You can always ring back just before and sign up for a month ie cancel your cancellation.

A good deal !! How much were you paying and was it already a deal?

Check your Sky account on the TV for any deals they might be offering you.

For anyone that is having problems getting through to SKY i had issues recently with broadband and couldn't get through the Irish numbers were directing me towards online and texting me links.

What i did was ring the English call Centre and they then put me through but just we careful as the second call i made the guy told me that there was a 38 minute call on my bill (landline) for ringing a UK number. When i told him it was Sky he crediting off my bill.

For anyone trying to cancel and failing to speak to someone.
I used the My Sky app, in there somewhere (can't exactly remember) is the option for a callback/or request to cancel. They will phone you within 48 hours.

    Don't miss that call!!

I got the call, spoke to a real life person, explained our reasons for leaving (don't use it, kids only watch Netflix, Saorview will do us....and we are moving. That was the clincher!) We actually did move!
Call took less than 5 minutes.
