Surely, the virus isn't serious enough to have the Junior and Leaving Cert exams either postponed or not take place at all this year, which would mean that LC students would have to be at school for another year.

    No one knows.

Schools will likely close for five weeks, but were due to be closed for two and a half of them anyway. Going to be a few weeks till we know if this needs to extend longer or not.

I would hope that those returning from Cheltenham would self isolate for 14 days.

They should be forcefully isolated of needs be for idiocy alone.

China didnt make the mess! It was the bloody virus that made the mess. It fact, China did everything it could to stop spreading. It could have started in any country.

There are likely animal reservoirs of viruses everywhere. They transmit to humans via unsafe eating and alternative medicine practices. People are right to criticise those. It’s not correct to say that it could have started anywhere.

I'm sure a family member would use one of these on a sick person if there was a lack of machine respirators. They sit there all day and night breathing for them if need be.

would this work? Where would you get one?

Worst case scenario is to delay them until December.

What would that mean for the third level intake in September?

Some students might have deferred their place for a year

Those failing exam having to repeat first year.

All schools and universities need to be closed this friday, no ifs, buts or maybes.

All sports fixtures need to be cancelled or postponed indefinitely for 3 reasons. Prevent mixing of crowds, players in dressing rooms and free up much needed capacity in hospital emergency departments. We cant have our health professionals dealing with sports injuries now. As many people need to be kept out of hospitals as possible.

It's been stated that if they start these measures too early people will become fatigued and will eventually lead to people not heeding the advice.

A lock down would then not be successful.

If or when these measures are taken they will want to be for the shortest possible period. They won't shut down things until it's absolutely necessary.

    This can change quickly.

A lot of individual businesses and organisations will need to take responsibility for their own decisions in this regard too.

Many local events where I am have been cancelled (rightly) without them being specifically told to. The organisers decided not to take the risk.

Not as straight forward as that unfortunately. Maybe the consultant can explain why

We should close our borders and go into lock down. We could in theory manage this very well and have it cleared soon.

Can you imagine the hysteria that would break out among LC students if their exams were postponed or cancelled? They would have greater justification for complaining about that than about disruption to their social lives, that's for sure!

Strange thing is that is where I am watching. I have noticed that nothing has been reported out of Syria. There is a tent city on Turkish southern border with a population greater than Dublin, there is another of similar size in Jordan. The medical facilities there are probably equivalent to something like Navan or Mullingar hospital.
These places could be potential death camps.

Then there would be no students starting first-year at third level at that point, I guess.

But how long do you close them down for. As soon as you open the 1st flight could have a passenger with virus on it. We would run out of things pretty quickly too.
