Hopefully all those people I've seen on bikes over the last 3 or 4 weeks get inspired to keep it up and go a bit further now and go a few km's out of town and discover cycling is at it's best when you get out of the town.

At the very worst, those that don't and who return to driving, will now at least have more of an idea of the space required by those on bikes.

My optimistic reading of the roadmap is that there's a possibility of local TTs from June 29th (the 20km limit will still apply) and open road racing from July 20th, maybe I've the wrong end of the stick there but it'd be nice to have something to look forward to.

Heard there was a small CI conference call yesterday and that a cap of 50 will be in place for any planned road races if they run. At that number not many clubs will bother running them as they will lose alot of money. Also I doubt people will want to put themselves at risk of the flying snot rockets. Also entries only accepted from within the province where the race is being held. Not quite sure where that leaves Connaught where there is hardly any racing anyway.
A good group spin would please me immensely at this point.
Local foot start TT will be a possibility though.

I was referring to the relaxation of restrictions for those cocooning from next Tuesday, who can "leave their homes for exercise or a drive so long as they avoid all contact with other people" in response to someone questioning whether we can expect more cars on the road. The answer would seem to be "yes", from next Tuesday.

GCN did a video where they discussed (albeit briefly) whether this could have any positive long term effects on cycling. i like to think so, but i live on a busy road so it's not going to be immediately obvious to me.
to be fair, GCN have shown a nice spark of inventiveness with the restrictions of the lockdown, with conor dunne and his brother in law making homemade rollers and 'hank' welding together a tall bike.

They won't. They'll think what are they whinging about, when I was cycling there was loads of room

I wonder if Cycling Ireland have made representations to government about easing restrictions for those with CI licences - similar to what is happening in other countries.

I emailed CI about this the other day and got the following reply: "Under no circumstances will Cycling Ireland be lobbying for members to be exempt from measures put in place by the Irish government informed by health experts and specialists to help curb the spread and ease the deadliness of the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the world and our country at the moment, from which 1,190 people from this country have lost their lives so far."

I replied to say that I wrote in the context of easing of restrictions being considered and that a number of other sports bodies had been making the case to Sports Ireland and others that their members would welcome some relaxation of the current limit. I haven't heard back from them.

What would be useful, particularly in the context of groups of up to four cycling together from 18 May, would be science based guidelines on how social distancing should be maintained. From what I have read so far, cycling 2 metres directly behind someone is a great way of catching any bugs they might be exhaling.

leaving aside the optics, if you didn't actually want to catch it and if you cant cycle parallel to someone i'd be looking at something like 10mrs and not more than 2 cyclists or agree much larger gaps.

those science based guidelines simply don't exist, because there's no science on it. no-one is doing any meaningul research on this.
the government, and CI as a result, will simply take a line that 'we don't know what the safe distance is to cycle behind someone who could potentially be contagious, so our guidance is not to cycle behind anyone for any resonable distance'.

As you say, the science doesn't exist.

I would imagine cycling in (non-household) groups of any size would be seen as being closest to non-contact team sports, and would be permitted at the same time as they will be.

You know what would be great? When the government announces the next phase of relaxing the lockdown, if they could announce publicly, on the 6 o clock news, that cyclists should make sure to cycle 2 abreast as it's safer than in front of one and other.
Get the message out there in the public domain from an official source and put the inflammatory language to bed, thank you very much - mod
