So I've just been told this by the lad I'm seeing, turns out the last lad I was seeing a few years ago also 'didn't do Valentine's' either.
I've never had a Valentine's, so just wondering how common is this?

I work in retail and know that all our stuff is sold by the time the day comes around, so someone does it :-D

So do ye fine people of AH do Valentines or do I just get bogeys?

Men typically dont care for it, sorry :) because it's seen as men making the effort and women getting the spoils.

You could causually remind him of steak-and-blowjob-day with a wink and a hint and see if that's gets him to put in the effort.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Female, I don't care for it and have never celebrated it. None of my friends celebrate it either, male or female.

I don't! (Female, in a relationship).Maybe a card but I insist on no presents. Christmas and birthdays are enough to be going on with...

Load of me bollox Hallmark card day.

Some years yes and some years no. I think this year I'll get her a voucher for nails or hair or something.
Don't expect anything because I usually hate presents

I’m so adept at not doing Valentine’s Day that I didn’t even notice it this year.

When you're in a long term relationship where sex gets less and less frequent, Valentines is a bit of a god-send.

Big hookey load of bolox of a day but I still get the head taken off me if I don't get something :(

When I was younger with flings and at the start of my relationship now we did it but once we got comfortable and honest with each other, we both admitted we thought it was bullsh!t. When I saw this thread I thought it was Valentine's Day today! It is unlikely my husband will remember the date either.

    ?

Probably just hasn't mastered the art of bi-location yet. Can't "do" the wife and the girlfriend together...unfortunately;)

    its a load of bollix

being upset at a lad for not buying a token card is a sure sign of crazy for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,166 ✭✭✭Still waters

Watching the telly and all the talk shows are promoting all female products, shampoos perfumes etc. A day that's totally female orientated and women buy into it and expect something and feel disappointed when he turns up with his lad in his hand and a shìtty card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,430 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

I don’t care too much about it but I’d never turn up “empty handed” for it.

I mean, I’m not too into “celebrating” my birthday but I still get presents for others.

I've been told that I am doing this year and that I have to buy flowers.

In exchange my girlfriend is cooking us t-bone steaks for dinner so that's a win-win.

Wait till you get told about "Galentine's Day" yes.... Valentine's with a "G"

My twin girls came home from a club they are in recently talking about Galentine's, we thought they were mispronunciating valentine's .... Turns out we were wrong !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 475 ✭✭PHG

Never have, never will. A load of nonsense. Closest I have come is a card. If you cannot make your partner feel loved the rest of the year, then what is the point on this one day.

Best mate is a chef and has told me a lot of places pre cook the food and up the prices for it. Used to go out for dinners most weeks with exes so no point paying more for worse food.

    Nothing now :-D:-D
He didn't do Christmas either cos we were newly dating. I did.

Myself and the OH don't really acknowledge it. Not into being rushed in and out of a busy restaurant, possibly inflated prices (especially flowers), and the gifts that "express love" (which are usually pretty stereotypical and require little thought or effort aside from getting to the shops in time).

    🤪

Me and my wife used to go out for a meal on Valentines, but we got many disappointing expensive meals, so we stopped going out for it.

However, we do spend it together at home enjoying each others company, watching stuff on TV, I cook a lovely meal, and I'll generally buy something small like chocolates for her, but she doesn't for me, nor do I want her to.. we share the ones I buy.

So yeah we celebrate it, but on a small, private, not expensive scale at home.

Why should there be a set day to show affection? It should be shown every day!

Wait till you get told about "Galentine's Day" yes.... Valentine's with a "G"
An even bigger load of bollocks than Valentine's.. Though it has been around years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,148 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

I've always given a card which I'll have to buy today.

He might buy fancy chocolates which he and the kids will eat 80-90 % of :)

I remember years ago going out for dinner... The most uncomfortable dinner ever... The restaurant, a nice one, obviously had arranged all the tables in twos, with the minimum gap between them. I'm a size 6-8 and still struggled to squeeze through. The whole effect was of a medieval long table.... I was as much in the conversation with the couples beside me as I was with the boyfriend.... Never again.

I'd rather pick up a marks and spencer deal meal and eat in my pj's

We are not doing anything this year as cash is a bit tight . However I am cooking a nice steak dinner Saturday night for him and he will get in the booze .
I'm not a big fan of Valentine's day myself , think it can be over rated to be honest and a money gimmick with flowers etc . Himself would often bring me home flowers from Moore Street on a Friday evening max cost 10 euros and I appreciate those flowers more than overpriced interflora roses for Valentines .

The only positive purpose that Valentines Day servers is to determine how high maintenance your new girlfriend is.

A Taxi man once told me he calls it st Vaselines day as it’s the only day of the year the wife takes it in the swiss !!

I tend to avoid any Callander event that tells me when or how I should be expressing my affections - or thinking about my loved ones. So do not do Valentines at all either - and tend often not to do terribly much for Birthdays either. And we do not do Santa Claus with our children.

Randomly through the year however I will do gifts and other tokens of affection. Usually when it means something to me - or them - at the time.

I find this tends to be appreciated more. Shows you actually mean it and are thinking of the person in question. Rather than some calendar pop up on your phone making you do it.

I’ll do something small. Card €2, small pack of fancy chocolates €4, bottle of wine €8. She’s home late tomorrow so I’ll clean the house and make it relaxing and I’d cook dinner anyway so I’ll make one she likes so she can get something hot inside her when she gets in ... and have her dinner

All in for €14 and the house clean and dinner cooked. It’s not a big deal but I know she’ll appreciate it.

I'll be getting her a card, flowers, chocolates, and a gift. She always gets me something too. I think most people in relationships who get nothing whatsoever for Valentine's day end up secretly disappointed. "I don't do Valentine's day" is often a cover for being cheap or not giving a toss.

I'm inclined to agree, having said that I spent a right few bob on an Xmas present and her birthday is coming up so it'll be a card and a steak at home.

Married 15 years. We keep it fairly low key. Dinner for 2 at home. Feed the Kids early and ship them off to bed.
Husband cooking this year. Probably Steak as he does a good one. Have a decent Red lined up to match.
We do cards, no flowers, no gifts. Did Dinner out once a million years ago - never again!

A few days ago my wife told me she'd be getting something for me, and then said 'Did you hear that? JUST LETTING YOU KNOW.'

I have been warned. There shall be no repeat of last year's unpleasantness.

I worked in restaurants in the past a d I can guarantee you're getting food that designed to be mass produced, a worse service with bigger mark up and in a more busy restaurant. In short, it's the worst day to eat out.

We'll go for a meal out next week or the week after - whenever suits. But no way I'd go out on valentines or the weekend after if the 14th falls during the week.

Female here and also not into it, and never was.
For my first valentines with my ex he pulled out all the stops, he had flowers delivered to my work, got me a beautiful bracelet and perfume and booked us a surprise night away to a hotel with a dinner reservation for a lovely restaurant.

He hadn't believe me when I said I wasn't bothered because his ex used to say things like that and then go postal if there wasn't a big fuss made. Poor lad put himself under such pressure for nothing. I mean, I appreciated the gestures but there was really no need.

Every other subsequent year we got a chinese takeaway and a bottle of wine and watched a movie at home. Far more enjoyable and way less pressure.

I enjoy picking a card and writing little things in it for my wife. I do it because I like too, and I don't restrict it to Valentines day either. As a kid I used to receive the occasional card, most were just funny types but I remember getting a genuine one and being totally chuffed with myself. A little loving message written by hand can make a big impact.

    You get bogeys :(

The whole “I don’t do...” misses the point. In a relationship it’s not about what you don’t do, it’s about doing things that you know mean something to the other person, or people, whichever :D

I’ll send a few cards and plush toys and whatever, it’s just a bit of fun. I understand why some people are dead set against the idea in principle, but it’s easy to tell the difference between them and someone who’s just a tightarse :pac:

Don't do it and never have.

However, I do the stuff associated with it, apart from the cards obviously, regularly through out the year and so does she. Better to be spontaneous but that's just my opinion.

Wait till you get told about "Galentine's Day"
Ah yes, heard of that the other day.

It's for single women who act all feisty and "I don't need no man because I'm a strong independent woman" but who are actually freaked to bits about it and need to come up with something on 14th February to make themselves feel better.

We'll do cards. That's about it. We usually get a single get a rose for our daughter.
Had one dinner out for Valentines and had the worst meal stuck sitting beside my boss and his wife.
