I come from the continent and at least in my home country it's extremely rare, but I suppose it depends on the country. Just that it sometimes it's wrongly assumed to be the case, like when turning left, you don't yield to traffic coming the opposite way because now it comes from your right, you yield because you change direction and cross theirs.

As far as I know, we have the same rule here. Somebody already on the road whether car or pedestrian has right of way. I was lectured about it by a Garda many years ago. He said they had "possession of the road" and I had to give way.

It's completely different on the continent - there the pedestrians have the green light to cross in the same direction as the cars that have a green light (assuming a simple cross junction) - so if you're turning either left or right you can encounter pedestrians crossing on green.

no saying the opposite. on the continent say you turn right and the road youre turning into theres someone just walking across or intends to cross you have to yield. goes in line with the junctions with lights. on the continent pedestrians green light and car green light goes simultaneously so you make a turn youd cross the pedestrians walkway while they have the green light too and you gotta yield to pedestrians there.

here you turn a corner nobody waits for pedestrians in any situation and typically green light for cars and pedestrians are separate.

Ah, misunderstood. In Ireland, as a driver at an uncontrolled junction turning left, I must give way to pedestrians crossing or about to cross the road I'm turning into.

Edit, I don't know how that is different to the continent.

as much as that is how a four way stop generally works in practice, its meant to be who arrived at the stop first. if two or more cars arrive at the same time then the traffic on the right has right of way, traffic going straight also has priority over turning traffic.

in practice it kinda works as you describe though (which is i why i absolutely hate them)

There are many different rules and conventions on "the continent". What works in Poland might not work in Greece, would be laughed at in Italy, questioned in France and land you in prison in Switzerland.

I drive in Ireland for 20 years and didnt know this because I have never seen a driver yield in this situation and I've never seen a pedestrian expecting a driver to yield.
