Can I ask what the invite stated? Law society are giving nothing away. I fully appreciate it was horrible not to be able to travel to the exam but I think it’s a really unfair advantage getting to sit it online

How is it an advantage ?
Typing speed might be an issue for some etc

Well maybe we had an advantage by not being physically restricted from sitting the exam ! Best of luck to everyone sitting the exam next week.

Sour enough wanting an exam to be marked harder for people who are obviously in a very difficult position. Says a lot about how you got on in the exam.

Wow, the level of begrudgery is quite sad to see. Let's not perpetuate lawyer stereotypes.

Best of luck to all next week!

Has the application form for October gone up yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 LawCandidate

It was also unfair to those who studied for weeks to have them cancelled at the last moment, left in the dark for over a week and now told we have about a week to study for back-to-back exams. The whole situation isn't ideal for anyone. If I was asked at the time to sit it when I was prepared or go through the shambles of the past week I would have picked the former, think before you go typing nonsense on here.

The average typing speed is obviously faster than the average handwriting speed. I hope the typed exam will be marked harder. It only seems fair.

    That’s questionable !

Thanks for that. Very good of you!

    1. Having experience from sitting exams online, you can't cheat in an online exam anymore than you can sitting it in person. Invigilator will have you pan the room and your desk with the camera. Your phone will be close by but not in reach. They will also be able to see you and every move you make on your laptop. So get dressed, don't sing or talk and definitely don't pick your nose. Someone is watching you. Same exam conditions as if you were in an exam hall. Can't even talk to yourself. If you have any pages open you'll be asked to close them. If you make any attempt to open any files or pages during your exam, law notes or not, you'll be asked to stop. They can see a mirror image of your computer screen. You cannot open anything other than the exam page.
    2. I type fast so this would be an advantage for me but for many people it's not. They type slower than they write. So hopefully the online exam gives a little extra time.
    3. More comfortable than stuck in a mask but you might have trouble sitting the exam if you can't find a quiet room with enough lighting to take a clear picture of your face and ID at the initial process. So, online has its own setbacks.
    4. Don't bash the LS. Perhaps they have offered some people to do it online because this is their last exam which had covid not occurred would have been sat from March. Maybe the LS wanted to give those students an opportunity to start their traineeship next month. Imagine your last exam being postponed, and then you couldn't attend the rescheduled sitting because your area was put on lockdown.
    5. Hopefully these students will get to sit their exams without a hitch and LS will also allow the October Sitting to go online.

In my opinion, under no circumstances should anyone, especially someone who is not sitting the exam, wish that an exam gets marked harder on students who have literally no say in the exam. Strange and petty behaviour. This forum for its most part is very helpful and supportive, understanding how stressful these exams are for all students. We should keep it that way.
If a student has no say in whether they do the exam online or not, best of luck to you regardless.

It’s not a personal attack. It was very hard sitting uncomfortably for 3 hours masked up in an exam that you’ll no doubt appreciate is stressful enough on a good day. I have great sympathy for those who couldn’t travel to sit it but the Law Society should have offered all candidates the opportunity to sit it online. You’re naive if you think sitting it in the comfort of you’re own home where you can without a doubt take a quick glance at key words or notes at the side of your computer in comparison to going into the actual exam hall.
I wish you the best of luck.
Hopefully after the EU paper, I’ve only one exam left and I can put these horrid exams behind me.

The lockdown for those counties came into place on the 7 August. 'You're naive if you think' the Law Society could arrange for the option of an online sitting for every single candidate within 5 days.

Couldn't agree more Pengo11. Candidates from those counties have worked just as hard as everyone else. They deserve the opportunity to sit the exam, in whatever forum, and be to graded on an equal footing.

Guys I don't want anyone to be at each other's throats on this because it's supposed to be a place where we actually help each other.

It is hurtful to see people wishing our exams are marked harder when the reality is, I could easily broken the lockdown to be there last week, but didn't because I knew I wouldn't want others to do it if they were me. I'm 100% sure people did break it but I couldn't personally live with myself if I happened to give any illness to anyone.

Instead, I wasted two full weeks annual leave to be told Monday afternoon that I couldn't sit exams I was fully prepared for.
Since then, I'm not going to lie, I've done very little study. It's been so hard to stay motivated- not an excuse but very true.

I'm now back working full time and the only time I can afford to take off for this new online sitting is half day for Thursday morning and half day for Friday morning.
It's not an ideal situation and as everyone here knows, the cramming last minute is what often gets people over the line.

I'm not saying this to defend ourselves, but I'd just love if people understood that we are not in any better position than you were. I'm going to be far less prepared heading into these exams next week than I was if I was allowed sit them last week and instead of encouragement, we get people saying they hope we get marked harder?

Honestly doesn't make this feel like a nice place to be anymore.

Absolutely, just don’t see what someone would get out of wishing the worst on somebody who has no control over the situation.

Some good advice for your future careers is to not stick your nose in colleagues' business.

We all have enough to be getting on with keeping our own little patch. Look after your own patch and don't be glaring enviously at your neighbours' patches or worse still setting out to sabotage them. You'll get the wrong reputation very quickly in the legal world here, which is small enough.

Remote invigilation- worked well for the accounting exams apparently

I sat the ACA last year and from speaking to people I know doing it this year, the accounting exams had a lot of issues such as; formatting errors when answering; dropped connections; not registering answers; error screens lasting 5 minutes.

From what they have told me they would much rather be sitting them in a hall.

It was obvious since March than this possibility could have arisen. The Law society should have contingency in place.

Look this is a horrible situation for all of us, I would rather have sat the exams at home but then again I don’t have internet problems or too many housemates to worry about. And then again I would have rathered the exam hall to a last minute cancellation and my county being on lockdown again.

The uncertainty of the situation has been very difficult and I think the only reasonable next step is for the LS to give us all automatic passes for attempting the dreaded FE1s during a global pandemic! ;)

Not sure if it will put anyone's mind at ease regarding typing speed and fairness, but it looks like the online exam is going to be written and we scan in the pages after we're done!

I think that’s the best way - not in terms of any unfairness or anything but in case of technical problems at least you can keep writing!

We got the instructions for next week a few minutes ago.
They're sending us the answer booklets by post!

Oh, for the EU and Tort papers... I was terrified you meant the October sitting.

    Sorry, should have clarified!

I would imagine this is basically going to be a trial for October though so wouldn't be surprised if the process is similar.

Does anyone have a grid for the cases that come up in the constitutional case note question? I have grids in most of the other subjects if you want to swap

Another one I heard (about the ACA exams) was two people given the same details so they could see each other's answers live as they were typing them :pac::pac::pac: I just want my exam results, I keep saying I'll ring them once this drama finishes but it never ends!
