    My eircode status on nbi website has now changed to AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER.

    Apparently Vodafone were along the road earlier touting for business. I was out all day for missed them.

    Now just to decide who to go for as provider?

    Would i be best to sit tight for a couple of weeks to see how many companies contact me? Can they offer you better deals on your doorstep than you'd get online?

    Generally they'll lie to you on the door and give you the same, or worse, deal you get online.

    Was chatting to a neighbour who spoke to Vodafone, I think they said could be 4 to 6 weeks.

    Does that sound right?

    they’re likely accurate enough as they’d have leads when the fibre is set to go live and ready for installation.

    They gave me a flyer €35 pm for first 6 months and €40 pm after that on a 12 mth contract on 500Mbps . If you click the pre order link on the nbi site it'll bring you to the provder page and you can see any discounts for new sign ups by clicking through them.

    Did a quick search, and if you total the cost of the 1st 12months, for 500mb service they charge:

    Current provider: €540

    DigiWeb : €510

    Vodafone : €450

    Pure Telecom : €420.

    Considering what I read on here, and the fact that the service should be the same from each provider as they are only leasing the same line into your home, I'm probably going to go with a combination of cost and customer service reputation.

    So Pure Telecom. Only thing i need to check is if any have hidden charges now like extra for installation, router etc.

    A KN Circnet fella came by the day before my appointment, part of the pre-fit team or something. Seems they'll need to install two poles in the hedgerows down my lane and then meet up with a pre-existing duct.

    Is there any concern with running the fibre down a hedgerow? I'm new to living in the sticks so have yet to get any hedgerows trimmed so I wonder will it hamper that work going in the future if a fibre cable is running down 100 metre of hedgerow?

    It won't be in the hedge row, it will be on poles above it. Should have no bearing on trimming. It will then come down the last pole into the ground below.

    Cheers, yeah maybe I’m underestimating the height of the cable run. There are 2 or 3 trees along the hedgerow that it will have to run through. I think the KN guy said they might cut back a few branches.

    They will definitely cut them back if they're at cable height. Tree teams come in first.

    Just had a VF rep at the door, offering their services.

    Apparently can do €35 for 6 months, then €40 indefinitely, and if they ever do a cheaper price for 500meg, i wil be allowed the lower prixe. Free installation.

    Edit : just read their reviews on TrustPilot, very scary.

    I cannot tell you what they are like to deal with if you have any issues as I signed up with Vodafone last October when NBI finally arrived and have had a perfect connection since.

    I did contact them once as my wifi was giving me roughly 50 - 60% of my 1gig speed but was told you will only get max speed with a wired connection.

    honestly that’s just BS. You can easily get gigabit on WiFi with a decent router- there’s just isn’t very good.

    Looks like the last 2 survey pending DAs went into survey underway. Couple DAs around me went into network build in progress, looks like I'm gonna be in one of the last ones to go into network build.

    Out of interest, when it goes into available to preorder / ready for service is that generally when a certain amount of the da is passed or when its 100% completed?

    Didn't have a chance to ring them due to work. Will have to call over the weekend or Monday.

    Check that Vodafone don't have yearly price increases for inflation in their contracts.

    I signed up with VF for the year, can always change if im unhappy. I'm guessing all the service is the same no matter who you go with.

    They do have a CPI increase of 3.50 annually, which will kick in at the start of the 2nd year, but I'll probably be looking at switching then.

    Chose Sky myself, 1Gb 35 euro for 12 months. NBI guy called out to the house today (2 days after signing up with sky) to have a look at the pole and agree where to run it in to the house, said it'll be a few weeks before they come back to do the work. No cpi increase during the year contract that I'm aware of, will probably switch after the 12 months as I have zero interest in their tv offering.

    The service is not the same.

    The type of modem supplied is important.

    Yearly price increases are an issue alao

    I go with a locally based ISP because they supply a non locked down modem. Don't have court orders to block content and no yearly price increases. Support is a text message away.

    I currently get my Internet from a local provider and asked them for a price to offer me fibre.

    Despite being a loyal customer for about 7yrs, often having to put up with ropey service, they offered me exactly the same price as any new customer would get, which was >€100 more for the 1st year than VF. So why would I go local?

    I hear what you're saying about the modem etc, but I'll see what VF offer, I'm sure an outfit as big as them won't be offering rubbish gear? Does anyone who signed up with VF care to comment?

    Virgin are the second largest or largest ISP in the country.

    Their hardware is abysmal.

    Don't assume any connection between scale and quality

    1. eir

    2 virgin media

    3. Vodafone

    4. Sky


    if exclusively looking at the big names and their market share of broadband.

    All ISP supplied hardware is usually garbage unless you you sign up to one who supplies Fritzboxes which are generally decent enough.

    I tend to stick to my own hardware set as I have no need for a landline or tv service.

    Re VF, I signed up with them 2 years ago when setting up a connection at my mothers home so we could set up security cameras and smart devices to make her life easier, I found thier customer service to be poor and on a few occassions we ran in to issues with the service being down for unexplained reasons but that happens to all providers so not sure how much of an issue that was notbeing there all the time.

    I did read the bad reviews of their customer service, but since then the rep assured me that they have 2 Irish based call centres, think they are Donegal town and Galway?

    Hopefully I won't have to contact them too often.

    Kelco (field sales company operating on behalf of Vodafone) have small centres out West, but once you're signed up then any communication will be with Vodafone's call centres directly, all of which are split between Egypt (mostly) and India.
