    Hi there,

Just saw the news that all 3 family members could swim. How is this possible? Could a pump suck you in?

The pool was examined and found to be in good working order. It sounds like the family may have overestimated their swimming capabilities. Just a tragic accident.

A person drowning will cling on to you and pull you under. That is why people are taught a specific way to rescue someone. I have no idea what happened in this case but it is certainly possible that they drowned each other accidentally.

Earlier reports all stated that none of them could swim.

If none of them could swim then they were liable for their own deaths as they shouldn’t have been in the pool with out flotation aids etc

You picked that up wrong. None of them could swim.
the wife/mother is claiming they could all swim and some malfunction with the pool caused them to be dragged out to the deep end and pulled under the surface and drowned. the police are saying there is nothing wring with the pool.

    That poor family. How horrific.

No lifeguard at a hotel pool is the concerning bit for me. They said they didn't need one because the pool was small?? It had a deep end. It was hardly a paddling pool and even in a paddling pool a child could get into difficulty easily. There should have been a lifeguard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,961 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

I wouldn't read much into the local authorities testing the pool. I don't think they were sucked down but I wonder if the child could of got it's foot stuck in a vent.

No requirement for a lifeguard in pool that size. This is very strange. Assumed that it was the suction from the pump that was faulty and that had pulled them under. But seems that was not the case. Three people drowning in a hotel pool is very peculiar. Particularly if as the wife claimed they could swim. And why would father and brother go into to deep end if they couldn't?

God love them, what an awful tragedy.

It seems most likely that it was a panic drowning, someone who couldn't swim or was suffering some sort of issue, likely dragged others down who could swim. This happens quite a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,382 ✭✭✭CPTM

I wonder if there was adequate life-saving equipment surrounding the pool. I don't if that's a requirement for all businesses with swimming pools/access to lakes etc.

My initial reading into this tragedy was drowning, due to one or more of the family not being able to swim! Then there was reports that they could swim, but that the police had taken the electric pool pump away for inspection...the plot thickens.

Some suggested they were electrocuted by faulty wiring in the pump, others suggested that they were sucked down under the water by the faulty pump, yet the latest reports take us back to square one (my initial reading) that at least one member of the family couldn't swim properly, or maybe not at all?

Sounds like the girl got into difficulty, then the older brother tried to rescue her, followed by the Dad (who couldn't swim)???

    Nothing official yet.

Possibly. Seems unlikely the young daughter would be strong enough but maybe the father or brother had a panic attack while rescuing her. Mother said they could swim but maybe one of them had a fear of water and only went in because daughter was in difficulty.
So that would have been two people in difficulty and they could have dragged the third under.

I dont believe that there was anything wrong with the pool. It seems like it was just a tragic incident where 3 people that could not swim (or were at best poor swimmers) got into difficulty in the water.

The family were black from what I understand. I read a medical journal article claiming that black humans are less buoyant than European whites. That sounds crazy to me. I wonder if it is true. Not suggesting that this has anything to do with this tragedy, but I found it interesting none the less.

The pool was cold and the only one that was unheated.
    cold water shock is probable

I highly doubt a pool pump would be powerful enough to sick 3 people in. It's not a turbine in a dam.

    Or something else happened ?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,565 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

The pool looks tiny. The fact that the father got in via the steps suggests to me that he couldn't swim, or was not comfortable with water. It should have been possible to reach the kids with a sun lounger or something else. I have seen large adults be pushed under water by small children who have panicked. This looks like a terrible tragedy. It should have been easily prevented, but that is easy to say with hindsight. It should serve as a warning to everyone on the dangers of water and how proper swim lessons and basic life saving are a life skill that everyone should have.

thanks. i'd invite all those who have made, perhaps accurate, unfavourable assessments of my character to put me on ignore. problem solved.

Would there have been an issue with the pool chemicals? Although you would think any toxic gases would disperse in an open air pool.

Desperately sad, but I’m thinking tragic incident.

Jesus Christ people do love a self righteous pile on. The poster apologised for an ill judged remark, we all make varying degrees of same the odd time. These pile ons make me squirm with their sanctimony.

Poor family. Poor woman. Unbearable for her what has happened. Cold water shock is very possible and deadly. We are abroad and the pool is not heated and my big lummoxes have been lepping in by times for the craic (briefly!)- I must have warned them a million times so far about cold water shock.

and equally as ridiculous as the SuicideCircus comment are all the amateur Poirots and Miss Marples trying to make their guess as to what went wrong !!

Boards is turning into an echo chamber of …

Sees incident on media, starts thread on boards....

Person see thread on Boards, has to comment - Negatively/Positively.? Mainly negative.

Get outraged by the thread - must start argument

Gets outraged by seeing people outraged - must reply angrily ….

Sees outraged reply, to initial outraged response, gets more outrage...

Anger is an energy - SJW jumps on board, and gets offended on behalf of the person/persons/thing that has been negatively commented about.

Thread meanders along, with the same blah-blah-blah until the thread if forgotten about/superceded by another incident ………

    Yadda, yadda, yadda …..

Personally, I find the "they drowned coz they're black" post far weirder than that one

Perfectly legitimate in my view to speculate as to what happened.

Agree though the SJWs who are always looking for something to be offended and outraged by are very annoying and tiresome.

    Mod

A poster made a comment in bad taste, they then retracted it on thread. The initial comment was quoted multiple times.

I have deleted multiple posts referring to it.

If you are aware of the post - no more reference to it.

If you are not - same applies.

A tragedy happened here, have some compassion.

Pools don't have any suction. They overflow into a drain which feeds the pump through the filters, and is then pumped back to the pool, normally via jets in the wall. There is nothing in the pool to get sucked into. There is only a drain at the lowest point for the purpose of emptying.

It would be in very bad taste if the mother is looking to now claim they were all Olympic Swimmers in a bid to somehow make money off the back of the deaths, Nigerians love their scams but this is crazy if that's what she is doing.

If you look at World Corruption Index you'll find Nigeria right there, you'd find many mainstream News Media showing the index, from BBC, to Forbes Magazine. It's only facts, and I'm saying if that is what is going on then it's pretty dam crazy.

But we've seen child killers play the hero, the ones front and center leading the search for missing kids, so it would not be a shock to see that now the mother is suddenly saying they were all Olympic Swimmers.

Im not saying it's what is happening here, I'm just saying it would not come as a shock.

    - Nobody is denying the high level of corruption and scam artistry unfortunately prevalent in Nigeria

    - The mother didn't say they're Olympic swimmers (you look stupid when you keep saying that)

    - Of course it would be a shock if it turned out that the woman killed her family or didn't kill them but made up a story about their deaths to cash in, even though she's Nigerian

    - You know all of the above and are just out to be controversial; it's a bit loopy really

Thing is though there are tragedys and disasters happening all the time, all over the world. And of course there is racism, sexism, xenophobia, transphobia etc etc etc.

If you spend your life getting offended and outraged of behalf of others that you don't know because of comments on discussion forums then you will spend your life permanently offended and outraged.

SJW is such an inane term. It's supposed to refer to those very easily upset folks who e.g. insist on a load of genders. That's not social justice (which is stuff like ending segregation) so it's a stupid phrase in the first place. But it gets used for anything at all, which is stupider again.

People who react to posts that are obviously provocative are worse than the initial poster IMV. Giving oxygen to stirrers.

I think it was a tragic accident myself. Doesn’t make it easier though.
