It depends on what you mean by "African language"

    1. Languages spoken in Africa — you'd have to include English and French (and they'd be in the top ten list, I'm pretty sure).
    2. Languages spoken only, or almost only, in Africa — you'd exclude English and French, but include Afrikaans, Maghrebi, Masri, Juba and possibly a couple of others (which is what the map does).
    3. Languages indigenous to Africa — you'd exclude Afrikaans, Maghrebi etc (which the top ten list does).

Dipolar structure formed by a Mozambique Channel ring (R1) and a cyclonic eddy (C1) in the central Mozambique Channel. Chlorophyll concentration (mg ) and SSH (1 red contour/10 cm) for 16 April 2022, about 10 days after dipole formation. The scientific cruise track (from April 19 to 24 May 2024) is represented as a white dashed line and station numbers are given into white circles. A filament (F1) of enhanced chlorophyll and coastal waters is swiped offshore by the interactions of R1 with Sofala Bank. Another filament has been captured previously by C1 and spirals into the eddy core

"mld" there means "milliard" which anywhere that uses short form numbering calls a billion; in case anyone is wondering how you'd be richest with a few million

    Isnt Shapoor Mistry deceased?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,415 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

    No, that's his brother.

Got to say I'd never heard of the guy before this thread. I presumed he was Irish based on buying a passport for investment or something like that, but it seems his mum was Irish. Probably. Here's an interesting Irish Times article from three years ago when the father died on just how little was known about them.

The head of Tata, Noel Tata, also has Irish citizenship, I think my virtue of marrying Mistry's sister. Never heard that before either. He can't be far off in the rich stakes

    Forbes

According to the 2024 Forbes list, there are 11 Irish citizens who are billionaires with 3 of them being from the Mistry family

5 of the 11 were born here

I thought it was odd that Taiwan and North Korea are in the same years but it is just a coincidence. Apparently North Korea are no longer using the Juche calendar as of this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,486 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

Almost certainly. By definition, anyone born in a country and still living there is not an "immigrant" or an "emigrant", regardless of ethnicity.

I suspect that the map simply compares total number of people living in the country who were not born there versus total number of people born in the country who do not live there.

North Korea is a bit of a surprise on that map. More immigrants than emigrants?

No - it's blue. South Korea is red (more emigrants)

I imagine in North Korea's cases, the numbers are pretty tiny either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,486 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

It's shown on the map as having more immigrants which, yes, is surprising. But a partial answer may be that it's all but impossible to emigrate from North Korea — the place is basically a prison — so if it has even a very small number of immigrants, it very likely does have more immigrants than emigrants.

Still, it does raise the question of where those immigrants would be coming from. There are small numbers of ethnic Japanese and ethnic Chinese people in North Korea, and some of those were born in Japan or China respectively. Many of them are the spouses of ethnic Korean citizens of North Korea.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,415 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Or where the info is coming from. Officially there's probably no emigrants from North Korea.

And in fairness there's an organisation in Japan whose job it is to convince North Korean emigrees (particularly from the 50s) to return with their families. So maybe it is correct alright.
