Hi. I only need access to RTE player. Would the stick be good for that without a subscription and would it be easy to scroll through the player’s menus etc. Thanks. William

Chromecast + a phone will do same job.

Anyone know how to add UK apps?

I bought one here as a present for my mum over there without checking. Bit stupid, just assumed they were the same hardware. Now she can't get BBC iplayer etc

Now TV support say no, just wondered if there might be an unofficial solution

The apps (eg RTE Player, VirginMedia player, All4, TED, SkyNews, YouTube etc) keep working even if the subscrption to NOW TV has lapsed. As somebody else has pointed out, you'll get most or all of these apps on the other sticks such as Chromecast, Amazon Firestick, Roku (in fact the NOW stick is really a Roku stick), and they are built into most smart TVs, so there's nothing special about the NOW TV stick. However I find I am using it a lot for catchup and boxsets from RTE, Virgin and All4.

I find the navigation easy with their remote control - easier than the LG remote or using a mobile for the Chromecast in fact. It's really quite a cheap way to add some smarts to an older non-smart TV.
    Hope this helps

There might well be, as it's really a ROKU stick and there have been threads around about modifying these. If fact I did it with the old NOW TV box (the little square slab thing) - there was a thread about 5/6 years ago on Boards.ie about it.
BUT - I'd suggest you don't do it! It's a lot of messing, it might brick it, and you are saving less than £20. Just buy her a UK one - eg a stick plus 2 months entertainment pass is £27 online - maybe less with codes or offers on Amazon etc.

ALSO - and this is the main reason - if you modify it, YOU will have to support it for the rest of your days! Anytime it goes wrong, it will be YOUR fault. If NOW decide to update it - you'll have to get it back home, modify it, send it back to UK untested.... noooo!

Can you install iptv on a Now tv USB, looks like you can.
Any reason to get Now tv over a firestick?

If it's of any use to anyone, Lidl are now selling Now TV sticks + 2 months Sky Cinema pass at €19.99.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, I hadn't realised this was the same offer they had on earlier this month... apologies.

Can this be used to simply watch RTÉ live?

Only the player as far as I can see. Also all4 and virgin media players

For anybody thinking of trying this for a live RTE player, I got one of these over the Christmas and tried the RTE player, and there doesn't seem to be a live option anywhere, seems to be just a catch-up player for RTE.

What's the WiFi signal like in these. Is it pretty reliable or does it drop a bit. Would like to use it upstairs but router downstairs.

Anyway of setting this up without entering card details? Won't be arsed renewing the free passes in the bundle

I found it a bit better at receiving WiFi (from my phone as a hotspot) than the LG TV was, but that itself is not great. Reception on the stick improved a bit when I used a HDMI extender that came with the Amazon Fire stick to get it a bit away from the TV - was only 6 inches or so and I couldn't get it out enough to get line of sight with the phone. Will soon try to lash up a proper router/AP with a USB connection to the phone and expect that will improve WiFi reception through the house.
